2016-2017 University of Michigan Application Thread

That, plus it's crazy and annoying how there's just too many pre-meds at UM. Every medical school in Michigan has its greatest number of matriculants from UM, mostly because of the sheer number of applicants.
It probably a selection bias thing. More people who want to pursue medicine go to U of M and end up applying to medical school. Lets be honest U of M is the highest ranked school for undergrad in MI.
Good research! Seems that general funding is a good catch-all category. I did some light digging and found the state of Michigan's FY 16 budget for the purpose of this exercise.

http://www.michigan.gov/documents/budget/Budget_all_together_2016_final_481096_7.pdf?20160914164311

UofM - Ann Arbor received slightly over $300 mil in state funding. If all this was diverted to the med school (not logical) - it would account for 4% of the total budget.

EDIT: We would also have to consider the portions of health care funding now directly tied to the university that would go to the school. It would be a crapshoot guessing here and probably makes up a good portion of state funds.

Of interesting note, IS/OOS tuition accounts for $7mil of the budget or a staggering 0.10% - and some think med school is TOO expensive.

Yeah difficult to assess that piece of it, the state only foots the bill for medicaid, but its state employee insurance probably contracts with them, It is a large web of dollars.

I could be wrong, but Im pretty sure they're mostly a silent rejection school until the end of the cycle.
Silent rejection is the best kind of rejection. It allows me to maintain hope, infact in 5 years I will still be hoping they are mulling over my application and may just offer me a spot .

In the year 2022, "Dear Candidate, we are pleased to offer you a seat in the class of 2021!"

I actually would like schools to let me know if I am not their kind of girl as soon as possible. With Michigan though, the rejections being withheld till the end makes more sense since they do accept updates and therefore may get new information to review throughout the cycle.

Is our portal supposed to change when it comes to <1 mo to our interview date? Besides the fact that we can't submit MIC anymore

Is UMich just not interviewing as many people this year? Looking at their 5 year average they send 598 IIs a year, with only 74 coming the month of September or later, but on their page for this year, they've only offered 283 IIs so far.

i don't know but it seems more likely they're handing them out slower this year.

Great, now I have to contend with a II drought.

I think that means that 74 of the interviews were offered to applicants who submitted in September or later. Not that 74 of the interviews were offered in September or later.

Oh... That would make more sense. Well that makes me feel better.

Heh, I'm not even sad anymore. It's just comical that I'm not going to get anywhere despite my hard work (much like thousands of others). *Sighs*

Does Michigan send out rejections before interview cycle ends? Or do they send them out once interview cycle is over?

For anyone who has already interviewed here, or has in the past: any advice for upcoming Michigan interviews, or Michigan's MMIs?

It is all about the Team. Have examples of working in teams. A twitter from a few years ago talked about an applicant that was all about "I", and not in a good way. Good Luck, and GO BLUE!

Michigan is a silent reject/silent hold school. Rejections are not sent out until after interviews end (early February).

I thought my stats would get me an IS interview for sure but they're just silently rejecting me :-(

What is your LizzyM look back at my posts in this thread to see hypothetical mcat and GPA distribution for IS acceptees

They've only given out like half of their interviews, and it seems mostly to OOS applicants. Chill out! We got time!
