2016-2017 University of South Florida Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My application finally says it was viewed today...
But, if everyone else's, even people who are already accepted, got viewed too, I'm sure it doesn't mean much.

Mine didn't get viewed! and I had an interview a few days ago! so maybe it is a good sign!

My assumption is that the Application platform USF works with marks an application as viewed only when it is opened within the platform itself, but it can be printed for screeners, rejected, offered an interview, or accepted without being opened within the platform.

Just my unjustified 2 cents

That could be it. But then why would they need to go into our applications at this point? :O

Where do students usually live? Is there a facebook page? ANd is this school pass fail?

I'm reading old threads and it seems like it was pass fail, but they recently switched to a graded system??? wtf

USF MCOM '15 grad here

Couple things you should know about my school if you're considering it.

Tampa is a pretty nice city to live in, decent cost of living, traffic won't be worse than SoCal, and you're 45 min-1 hour to some nice beaches.

Preclinical years: Yes, there is some required classroom time, but all the lectures are recorded and downloadable (stream at 2.5x speed in PJs). The pass-fail curriculum is TRULY pass-fail, the preclinical grades (with the exception of Step 1) have absolutely no bearing on AOA selection (third year grades + Step 1), nor is there an internal "ranking".

Training wise, I don't think you could go wrong with the hospitals that you rotate at while at USF. You primarily work at the James Haley VA and Tampa General Hospital. The VA allows for a decent amount of autonomy as a student, and TGH is a good mix of academic and private practice environments. In addition to these two you also rotate at Moffitt Cancer Center and some of the USF-affiliated area clinics. What's good about having all the rotations in the same city is that you get to know the USF house staff that also rotates at all these sites, which is fantastic for not having disjointed learning experiences all the time.

Match-wise, we had a number of extremely strong West coast matches from our class this year, a few with ties but most without. Research is decently easy to get, with a big cancer center (Moffitt), and reasonably active and accessible academic physicians in almost any specialty you can imagine.

Hopefully this isn't too late for you to see, but best of luck in your decision!"

I asked about it during my interview day, it's not really pass fail. Its honors, high pass (although it has some different name), pass, fail.

why the **** would they change the grading system from pass/fail no internal ranking to basically A/B/C/F?????

Basically from what I've heard, it was pass/fail until the Class of 2018 performed lousily in their preclinical years with low averages on their blocks and not-so-great Step scores. So for the next year onward they switched it back to grading to give some incentive.

I can provide some insight here, lots of friends scattered through USF med. That's too bad, but it makes sense. Also it's not graded on a bell curve (i.e. not only the top 10% of the class gets honors). If everyone does well, then everyone could get honors.

Anyone accepted heard about scholarships yet? Love the school but its significantly more expensive than home..

I've heard they don't release awards until later this month/march, but if anyone has gotten scholarships I'd love to know as well

Yeah the (lack of) bell curve is the more important thing. Preclinical grading sucks, but it's not suddenly gonna rocket to the top of the priority list for residency directors. Gunners will gun, and the rest should get along fine.

Waitlisted. Interviewed in mid January. In-state. Anyone know when people start getting pulled off the waitlist?

Sorry to hear that but at least it's not a rejection🙂 Usually around May 15th when the deadline for holding multiple acceptances passes. Also how did you find out? Email?

I received a II today for the CORE program for March 28. I assume it's the last interview date. Does anyone know if this will be a wait list interview or if they will have any seats available? I'm OOS 3.7 511 and research background with ties to the school. I do hold an acceptance to another program and i'm curious if its worth going to the interview, but i would love to attend USF

I did say you have a good shot at the school and should definitely attend the interview if USF is your top choice. Having attended USF as undergrad, I know that the school has to like you a lot to offer you an interview and from what I heard interview is not bad.

Dr.Daniel's emphasized that ALL applicants chosen to receive an interview slot are great applicants and they all have a shot at being accepted. He mentioned an applicant who was interviewed in late March and was ultimately accepted. If you really like USF's program I would urge you to attend your interview because you still have a chance of earning that acceptance whether outright or off the waitlist.

quick question did anyone get a Criminal background check before actually being waitlisted or accepted?

I've thought about it because I think it would be interesting to see, but I don't want schools to think that I'm looking for something. Can people see if you've ordered a Certiphi on yourself?

I got an email saying I had to because I was accepted or Waitlisted. But I haven't received any notification from anywhere

You got this e-mail today? You interviewed Jan 24th right? Has anyone who interviewed on Jan 24th heard back yet (this is when I did)?

Yeah got this email today, and interviewed the 24th, but it could be for another school I called admissions and she made it seem like it wasn't them. She also made it seem like I was waitlisted. I dont know if anyone has gotten a call for the 24th

Ahh gotcha. I'm a little paranoid. The interviews went really well so I'm kinda anxious about hearing from them

SORRYY i should have made it clear! i loved the school too! Hope it all ends up well for you!

Does anyone know if pre-II rejections are typically silent at USF?

Sorry if someone asked already or indicated otherwise.

I'm still pretty psyched hahaha. Isn't it right next to Tampa General? And we'd probably have lectures anyway

It's close by, on the mainland. Near the Lightning stadium and the rest of Channelside. No lectures in M3/M4 afaik, but research opportunities are gonna be great since it'll be easy to go back and forth between the hospital and the school.

Definitely.

I heard that 514 was the target MCAT and that 510 or 511 was the minimum cut off.

Good job on that MCAT score!!
So then would my 508 MCAT be holding me back from getting an II? I keep getting viewed, but no status change towards either getting an II or getting a rejection. LizzyM ~ 63-64, upward trend GPA.

Interviewed exactly 4 weeks ago and my app got viewed on Friday. They said 4-6 week turnaround to hear back. So hopefully that means they've met and are working on sending out decisions now.
