2016-2017 University of South Florida Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone who interviewed on the week of 12/5 heard back yet?
No not yet! I'm dying of anticipation lol. I think that they might have taken a break for Christmas, I don't expect to get a decision back until January.

They're interviewing tomorrow though, so theoretically they could have a decision for 12/5 this week
You're right... I was mistaken.
I figured since I didn't get a call, decisions had not gone out...
but my parents called me and said there was a letter from USF at my old address, stamped December 16th 4 days ago... I got waitlisted.

Decisions have gone out guys, for those of you who are accepted, I offer my warmest congratulations. For those of you who were waitlisted, I offer my sincerest condolences and hope for only the best. This sucks so bad, especially right before Christmas. Keep your head up guys, that's what I'll be trying to do.

I have already set everything up so I can tell you that they are slow on adding your social to get the uid. Once you get the uid it will still be a couple of days before the system recognizes your uid

EDIT: The uid will allow you to set up your health.usf.edu email and give you access to the portal/oasis where you can access financial aid and officially accept your seat. Again there is no rush to do so because deadline is April I believe.

If you have any questions feel free to message me as I have already set everything up!

Where do you officially accept your seat on the portal/oasis? I only see the personal information, student, and financial aid links.

There should be a new tab called "Offer", similar to the "interview" tab that popped up when you got your II. Give it a couple days to appear, it should show up.

edit: on the secondary application website

First go to this site: https://my.usf.edu/Pages/Home.aspx
You will need your USF ID.

Second, under the Resource tab, click on OASIS

Once you are in the Oasis portal, click on the Student tab. There will be an Admissions link you can click on and from there it will take you to a site where you can apply for Admissions as a first time student.

***DISCLAIMER***
I still haven't officially accepted my seat, but I plan on doing so. I do not know if this is the actual way to accept your seat, but if I had to hazard a guess I'd say this is the way to do it!

Feel free to DM for any other advice and join the Facebook group!

Not quite, that's for first-time undergraduate admissions. The offer acceptance is on the same website you scheduled your interview: https://usfmdadmissions.health.usf.edu/

What's the general attire for the meet-and-greet on the night before the interview? Should I wear a sportscoat or would a nice button-down shirt suffice?

Has anyone started on your financial aid stuff yet? My FAFSA has been processed, just wondering if anyone knows where to go from here! 🙂

Same, I can't really find much about it. I don't think they have a separate application though. If anyone knows, help us out!

Filed my FAFSA first day and haven't heard anything either.

What about merit aid? What's the word on that?

A friend who was accepted here last cycle told me he didn't hear about merit-based aid until April.

Thanks! Do you know if USF is generous with their aid? Tbh it sounds like from their financial aid website that they aren't

The merit scholarships are pretty generous, according to the same friend I asked about USF's financial aid. But then again, he scored a 42S on his MCAT so he may not be the perfect example.

Are the merit based scholarships generous to the point that an out of state student may face an equal cost of attendance as their in state school?

How do you know if they have viewed your application or not? I submitted my secondary mid July and haven't heard a thing.

Anybody remember if they've sent any pre-II rejections?

I've read random pages of past posts and didn't see anything of the sort…

Any ideas on when we will find out if we get this or not?

I think it's some time in April or May but I can't say for certain. I got in off the wait list in May and then got my aid package in June, so I don't know the exact timeline for people who get accepted earlier. All I know is that sizable merit aid is available but you don't apply for it and there's no published info about their selection criteria. I suspect having a high mcat score helps but it's no guarantee. I think the best way to go is to assume you will not get any merit aid from ANY school (unless of course you have already been informed) and make your decision with that assumption in mind. It really is a crapshoot.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Does USF let you stay on your parents' health insurance?

Also I was looking at the cost of attendance page and it seems to say that in the 3rd year tuition is cheaper?

And is the medical equipment list for real? It says we need to buy our own gloves???

That's a pretty standard thing for gross anatomy lab - you buy a small dissecting kit and gloves. The lab provides the more expensive tools, like bone saws.

The admissions page says they announce IIs through April. That seems awfully late to be giving IIs. Anyone know if that's outdated info or actually true, based on speaking with admissions or trends in the recent past years?

They had interview dates last year in April, but I'm not sure if the actual invitation was in April. It may have been March when they got the invitation.

I understand the dissecting kit but BYOG seems kind of weird lol. Well glad I saw this so I can keep a look out to see if any labs around here are throwing out boxes of gloves.

Hey, thank you for the information. I appreciate it. As you probably guessed, I'm just trying to figure out when to lose hope, and even a March invitation sounds good to me at this rate 👍

Unless the lab has changed immensely in 3 years, you supply your own gloves, the dissection equipment is available in the lab for all to use. I would rather purchase gloves (a little bit cheaper) than scalpels but maybe that's just me. Just split a box between friends and it's really not that bad.

Oh you definitely wanna stock up on nitrile gloves if you can find any extra boxes lying around. Don't bother with the latex - the formalin smell seeps right through them, and you end up smelling like cadaver for the rest of the day. Plus allergies.

Couldn't find it via the search function but roughly how long has it taken interviewees to get a decision after their interview?

How are you guys able to tell if they've viewed your application? All I see is that my application is "ready"? I submitted on 7/25....

The date will show in the same line as the "ready" thing.

I submitted around the same time as you and didn't get a viewed date until I emailed to check that there were no issues with my materials. Silence since then, so I think my date means nothing other than they opened my file to confirm everything was OK. If you're really worried you could do the same, but then again, it makes the viewed date seem a little less legitimate.
