2016-2017 University of Texas School of Medicine at San Antonio Application Thread

So I think this school has creeped up my preferences and it really is making a last minute impression on me. I really liked it here, and after starting to listen to my heart more as opposed to stats/numbers, this school seems like a strong fit for me. Does this school send out any more prematches? Also, is this place prematch heavy or match heavy?

Based on last year's thread, a small batch of prematches are sent out the Monday before Christmas. There's no saying for sure if it'll be the same this year. I also heard (I think earlier in this thread) that half of the class size is sent prematches. Whether that means half of the matriculating class is from prematch is another question.

Interesting. Well, I hope I get an early holiday present. Do you know anything about this school in terms of how they evaluate? Also, what are the new MCAT/GPA for this school? It seemed kinda on the DL about that. Same with the Techs. However, schools like Southwestern Medical School and A&M, they have their MCAT averages advertised on the sight.

Has anyone received a pre-II rejection or does UTSA silent reject?

The only TX school I've seen give rejections so far is UTRGV. The rest seem to be silent until after interviews end (around mid-January.)

I wish I got an interview from this place, it seems like everyone really likes it here.

This place is the bomb. Would give up toes and maybe fingers to go here. It's crazy how they balanced really high academic excellence with very chill students who aren't robots.

I wonder how schools decide who interviews haha. I just wish I knew what they wanted from me. 😕

What do y'all think about this school compared to other tx schools like UTMB and McGovern?

Gpa mcat clinical exposure research community service and interesting activities/hobbies. Plus lors and essays.

Lol so the same as every school. It's just interesting how schools choose to invite people, like some people get IIs to every school in TX except one, and I'm always curious about it. 😛

rgv and a couple others have a different focus.

I interviewed here last week and they said that they would be meeting Monday and Wednesday of this week. They said that they would be interviewing through December and wanted to leave enough spots for those people to possibly get accepted, but that they did plan on giving SOME acceptances. I have been waiting all week, but it doesn't look like anyone else has heard anything either...

It doesn't look like there has been much OOS action on this forum this year. And that's weird, since UTSA accepts way more OOSers than UTMB, for example.

Is the last week of interviewing this coming week? I figure they may be going on winter break.

I believe they gave a round of OOS acceptances around the 18th of December last year based on last year's thread.

Man, does this place like to tease until the match or something? Interviewed here in August. No prematch. Good stats. Thought I interviewed well. Neither me nor the people I scribe with who interviewed here and are also strong students (like 3 others) didn't get any prematch offers. I know there's a second round coming, but sheesh. Kinda disappointed thus far.

I believe they said they've become more match heavy. Stll tho, I'm in the same position and SA is my top choice atm.

My pen from here just fell apart. I think it's an omen

Nice! It seems they have sent their e-mails simultaneously..

Hmm...I guess here's to the match then 🙁
I remember the Dean saying that they are SUPER match-heavy. I'm kind of shocked they sent out pre-match offers at all. Most of the students I met there matched, so you're probably doing fine!!

can anyone tell me what the interview day schedule is like? do people interview in both the morning and afternoon, or just one? also, if they do both morning and afternoon, do we not find out which one we are until we get there?

Yep, it's breakfast, presentation, either interview or tour/student panel, lunch, interview or tour/student panel, wrap up. You find out when you get there. The agenda should be in the portal they sent you in the II email.

Could some current medical students give some of their advice/info regarding their experience so far?
I thought I was certain of where I was going until I started reading the TAMHSC thread lol
I have four friends who are current MS1s at A&M and two who are at San Antonio. We are all super close and I recently got to hang out with them and ask them about their respective schools. They all love their schools and believe they all have the resources to reach their goals. The one common theme they all agreed on is you're going to get out of your education what you put into it. Go where you feel you will belong most. In Texas, you will gain a great education and obtain a great residency as long as you work hard and take advantage of all the resources given to you.
