2016-2017 Virginia Commonwealth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just checked and I received the hold status  all this waiting and they finally said something.

What is the time frame of the interview day? I have an interview coming up and don't see information on when the day starts/ends and i want to book my flight! Thanks!

Interviewed a few weeks ago and just received a status update - I'm a little confused and don't exactly remember what to make of this... Guess I'll have to wait until December 15th to see what happens?

The Admissions Committee has met to discuss your file. Your application is being placed on hold for possible acceptance at a later date. We anticipate making offers around October 16, December 15, February 1, and March 16. If any of these dates falls on a weekend the offers will be made on the following Monday. Only offers of admission will be made on the dates above.

Your profile will remain on hold, and you will receive no further communication from us concerning your hold status. The next status change you will be contacted about will be to offer you a position in the class, to notify you that you have been placed on the alternate list (the alternate list is formulated in late-March), or to notify you that the Committee will no longer be considering your file.

We thank you for your interest in our school.

Hmm yeah based on what they told us on interview day, this doesn't make much sense.... I anticipated either hearing back early with an acceptance or having all decisions made December 15th (either on hold or accepted then)

Based on what they told us on interview day, it makes all kind of sense. The committee meets on Mondays to discuss the applicants who have recently interviewed. If they give you a passing score on the MMI, they rank you among the other passing applicants and you will get that status update ("Your application is being placed on hold for possible acceptance at a later date...") and you have to wait. On each of those dates (10/16, 12/15, 2/1, 3/16) the committee pulls from the ranked list and accepts 25% of the class. So if you're "on hold for possible acceptance" right now, that means you will have to wait for December 15th to find out if you will get in. If you don't get accepted on December 15, then you will probably have to wait until late March to see if you are on the alternate list, aka the wait list. It's really not that confusing.

Does VCU require documents to prove residency? I heard from EVMS and UVA about this, but not VCU.

Anyone still have the "MD file now complete. Sub-committee will now do a review of your application" status? I submitted back in August and have yet to see any sort of status change in the portal.

Yeah from the thread I think it's common. I do too, at least.

When did you interview? I interviewed pretty recently and just got a status saying that the committee will now do a review of my application.

Can someone please tell me what the schedule of the interview day looks like? Specifically, what time are we starting and finishing so that I can slowly arrange my flight details.

I interviewed in October. Here's the steps:

1. You get an II.
2. You go to the interview.
3. After the interview, you get a status that says the committee will now do a review. (This is the step you are at right now.)
4. The committee meets on Mondays. They discuss your whole app and your MMI performance to decide if you pass. Then they rank you among all the other applicants who passed. Depending on how backlogged they are, this might take a few weeks after your interview. (For me, I think it took three weeks.)
5. If you passed the MMI, your next status update will be the one that reads that you are "on hold for possible acceptance at a later date, etc." If not, I guess you get a status that says you're rejected.
6. You wait on hold until the next big acceptance date, the next one being December 15th. (This is the step I'm at currently.)
7. They accept about 25% of the class from the top of their ranked list on December 15th. If you didn't interview in time to be on the list by December 15th, then you'll be in consideration for a February 1st acceptance.
8. If you don't get accepted, you wait to see if you made it onto the alternate list in late March.

If the instructions are still the same from October, you need to get there at 8 to check in and go over the instructions for the MMI. Then you have the MMI from 9 to 11. Then there's an hour-long info session. Then you have lunch and a tour with some students from 12 to 2. The day ends around 2.

This was very helpful, thank you so much! Just curious, do you know what constitutes an applicant passing the MMI? Like is that the only criteria or does it also factor back into them considering your whole app (stats, activities, etc and interview) when determining whether or not you passed?

They didn't say. But I would imagine that when they go to decide where you are in the big ranked list of applicants, they must be looking at your whole app and not just the MMI. But maybe if you don't pass the MMI, they don't even bother doing a more holistic review? Who knows.

So I know some people got the "you are on hold for a later acceptance" status, which I think means they are on the offer list for one of the big acceptance dates based on what they told us when we interviewed. But I interviewed 11/19 and just got this update "
Your interview is now complete! The Committee will now do a review of your application. Once this review is complete, you will receive a status update regarding your profile." today. Anyone have any idea what that means? Or did anyone else get the same?

I'll just quote my own post from four posts ago because I literally just answered this question:

Your File Review is now complete. If you are granted an interview, you will receive a status update on your applicant portal. Please do not call the Admissions Office requesting special dates.

What's the prognosis, Doctors? Am I a goner, or are things looking up? LizzyM: 67, IS, Complete in September.

I did. They'll periodically review us and let us know 12/15.

Just wait, if you move on you'll get the same status everyone else is posting. You'll hear your decision on December 15th most likely.

I interviewed in Sept, already passed the big October 15 acceptance date once. Does that mean I am still being considered for Dec 15? Or I will be passed again until late March?

That's the one step that I'm not sure I understand. I think you stay in the ranked list and are in consideration for every acceptance date. But that's just a guess based on what seems the most fair and logical. It would also make the most sense if they do it that way considering that the alternate list isn't made until late March, after all of the acceptance dates are past. So you are ranked among all the interviewees until you get accepted, or you keep getting passed over until March and then you're either ranked high enough to get put on the alternate list or you get rejected. I think?

Thank you for your answer. Does VCU reject any one post Interview? Or they keep everyone with "possible acceptance at a later date"?

I think they do reject post interview. If you don't pass the MMI, then you never get that "on hold for a possible acceptance" status update. So I guess you can get rejected status at that point. (Watch me be completely wrong about all of this. I'm just trying to sort it out based on what they said at the interview.)

II this morning! Had the "Your M.D. file is now complete. The Sub-Committee will now do a review of your application. Once this review is complete, you will receive a status update regarding your profile." status since July so I had pretty much taken the silence as a rejection. There is hope!!

Did you get an email? Or just portal update?

Did anyone else receive an interview invite via a short email rather than a change in status in the portal?

Idk but I got my interview invite via phone call and my portal didn't update until a few days later and I received a short email.

So does this interview consist of any standard questions? I.e. Questions on your file? Or is it all MMI

Does any one got a rejection post interview yet ? Please share your stats?

I don't remember if I've seen any post interview rejections. I feel like maybe there were one or two, but you'd have to skim through like 27 pages to check.

I have a LizzyM around 73 and I'm in-state.

Does anyone know how you can see your secondary application? I can't seem to find out how

II today! OOS LizzyM 65-68. Been on the "Very Interested" status since early/mid September.

EDIT: Looks like the only date I can schedule is 03/01 at this point for those wondering. Oh, and I did receive a portal update email.

Dumb question, but are hotel rates the school have on their site just there to give you a general sense of the rates to compare one another? I called the hotels today and their offers (with the discount) were definitely not what the school suggested it would be... haha.

I submitted back in August and it doesn't even look like they've seen my application yet...
