2017-2018 Nova Southeastern University

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I interviewed 12/15, so I was in the third group of interviewees.

As far as I've seen the two people who posted here were interviewed before you so there's still hope! No worries, I bet you'll hear back next week with that sweet, sweet acceptance.

I actually don't have any research, so I was very nervous about this being a research focused school. Still wondering if that's going to bite me in the butt here. I'm perfectly okay with doing research if it means I get to live in Ft. Lauderdale/Davie... really hoping I managed to get that enthusiasm across.

I'm okay with doing a lot of things if it means living in Ft. Lauderdale... terrible things 0_0

I really hope so.

We just got snow where I live, and I've spent all week daydreaming about what it would be like if I lived in South Florida for the rest of my life and never saw a single snowflake again... I keep asking Alexa what the weather's like down there and it's usually at least 30-40 degrees warmer than I'm experiencing right now. It kills me. I would do terrible things to live down there, too.

There's a ton of hope. My own feeling is there's no way they did more than a small fraction of the seats. In addition, unless they do scholarships a decent number of acceptances will also get in elsewhere and not go to ft. Lauderdale. This is especially true if they did high MCAT acceptances first, because this matters a lot to a few schools (USF, Wmed, etc). So, nobody freak out and keep the faith...you didn't get this far without being an AWESOME person.

What do you guys think are the main concerns of going into Nova as the inaugural class?

Just some helpful info copy and pasted from www.md.nova.edu for those that haven't read it already:

When can I anticipate a decision following my interview?
Normally, a candidate can expect to receive a decision within 2-3 weeks following an interview.

What are the possible designations following an interview?
Each applicant will be designated as “accepted,” “deferred,” “waitlisted,” or “rejected.” Deferred candidates are set aside for a decision until later in the interview cycle.

Are candidates rank ordered on the waitlist?
Yes, rank order will not be revealed to applicants or any other parties.

Can I defer an offer of acceptance?
Yes, but deferrals are not automatic. Requests for deferral are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

I'm hoping for good news next week :O

Has anyone ever done PBL before to know if it is a good learning style for them? I’ve never done PBL before so I’m a little hesitant about diving right into what seems like a curriculum of 95% PBL.

I have its a good learning tool so long as you know the basicstatus beforehand. By talking with other you see holes in your knowledge, way of thinking, etc... also the materials stick a lot better

I'd second that it can be a great learning tool...as long as you are someone who can learn collaboratively. I did a 4000 level pathology and mechanisms of disease class that utilized PBL. What I learned was that people with tutoring experience (in anything really) really excelled at PBL. If however, your group was all people who loved rote learning and just watching khan academy (I also love khan academy, just not in a vacuum) then PBL sessions usually sucked for a while.

Most of you already know this too, bUT for those that don't...The push toward PBL is based on AMA research that showed students from PBL programs were stronger interns (1st year residents) than those from lecture based programs. I think that explains NSU really wanting to start with it too...they literally have everything invested in the success of their first few classes.

I interviewed early January, and I have a feeling we won’t be getting a decision this week since Dec 1st interviewees are just now getting decisions :/

Waitlisted
Id like to think that there will be a ton of movement from the waitlist for a new school. Especially because I dont think they are giving free tution, since if they were really giving scholarships to the whole class it would have been in their interest to have announced it already.
Thoughts?

Honestly, I sort of hope they don't give free tuition. I really, really enjoyed my interview and loved the area, and would be willing to pay full tuition to go there. My husband also wants to live in the Fort Lauderdale area - he lived there for years as a teenager and would just about cut a hand off to get to go back now. I feel like it might increase my chances of acceptance if the strongest applicants with acceptances elsewhere don't pick Nova over their other acceptances, which I feel like would probably only happen if Nova offered very significant/full tuition scholarships.

We'll see how it goes. No decisions here yet!

Also interviewed December 1st and complete silence so far. No one has mentioned rejections or deferrals so maybe that group is next to find out.

Waitlisted today. LizzyM=70. Interviewed 12/8

Sorry to hear that although as people have been saying there is sure to be plenty of movement off the waitlist throughout the next few months. So no worries yet.

I'm trying to gauge the relative research experience of people who've interviewed, mind sharing?

1.5 years bench research
1 year clinical research

Bummer. But I think that they will have a lot of movement off the waitlist, so you may well end up with an acceptance! Good luck
it was also mentioned that they said by interviews they were going to be very stingy with acceptances early on. so i wouldnt worry yet

Interviewing here soon and was wondering how the MMIs were?

Also wondering!! Interviewing in a few weeks and it will be my first MMI experience. I've watched the videos but not completely sure if they're ALL behavioral/ethical scenarios or they ask you about yourself as well?

You sign a confidentiality agreement, so nobody can really disclose any details.

But it was fine and well organized - nothing to worry over truthfully.

It's confidential but I'll give you what I can. There's nothing surprising, prepare for a standard MMI and also like you would for a regular interview (as far as the standard interview questions go). This website helped me. MMI Questions: 100 Sample Multiple Mini Interview Practice Questions! | BeMo Academic Consulting

Before your interview they'll send you more info on the MMI also through email. Here's their page on it too: Admissions Selection Process

All interviewers are nice and I wouldn't stress about it! This has been my only MMI style interview but from others I've heard its more relaxed than most others.

how many minutes were you given before you enter the room?

The prompts are short, you'll have plenty of time to read them and think about them. They'll email you specifics (number or rooms, time, etc.) before your interview and talk to you about it in length while you're there before the interview. So no worries. Just prepare as you would for a normal interview with emphasis on ethical based questions/scenarios.

How long before your interview did they send you information and did Ms. Reid respond to your confirmation email?

In the interest of data collection, zero research, but >10,000 hours of paid clinical experience. Maybe that makes up for the lack of research?

She did not initially respond to my confirmation email, which made me panic and email her the Monday before, at which point I received the response that she did have me on the schedule and she'd send out more details later in the week. So, for the second part, I got the detailed information three days before the interview. 🙂

Can anyone comment on the overall vibe of the interview/give me any advice? I know you can't specifically talk about the interview.

Was the email just about directions and parking? I have only gotten an email about that but not the interview itself
