2017-2018 Nova Southeastern University

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
FYI: Someone had commented a couple weeks ago saying that they'd resume sending out e-mails post-holiday on January 2nd. So, those of you who already interviewed and were told you'd hear back on the 1st (as well as those who have passed the 3-week mark since secondary submission) may be getting something today/soon. Also, that poster said they'd start sending out pre-II rejections as well as more IIs after the new year.

I'm hoping for that new year II :xf:

I called and they said the committee would meet again on Jan 4 and they would start sending out decisions after that

Wow that's very frustrating that they misinformed us and then never gave us an update on their decision timelines. Sort of makes them come off as unorganized. I wonder how well they have other things planned out (pre-clinical courses, step 1 exam studying, and clinical rotations). Definitely not the best first impression.

In the initial application, they said we’d hear in 2-3 weeks. It’s been 6.

I agree that this over-promise/under-deliver combo makes them seem very disorganized and makes me question how well put together their curriculum will be.

Though I don't think this excuses inconsistencies, it's pretty common for newer programs to have trouble following projected timelines. I'd guess that new programs just have a tendency to be overly optimistic and unfortunately that causes some extra stress for applicants.

That said, I do think that the initial 2-3 week time period they communicated was accurate as far as initial review goes. They should have just changed the language to 'your application will be reviewed within 2-3 weeks' as opposed to saying we'd receive a *decision* within that time frame. As far as post-II decisions go, it did sound like they had been telling later interview dates that they wouldn't be sending out any decisions until like mid-January, though I figured that just applied to the people interviewing on those days.

Any advice for the interview day? My interview is this Friday and its my first MMI-style interview. Safe to say I am extremely nervous. :wideyed:

No, but I'm there on Friday too. See you there!

w00t, Friday crew here!

Lookin' forward to that 60 degree weather. Been around 20 or less for the past week where I'm coming from.

As far as MMI, my first as well. I've heard watching mock MMI's on youtube can be helpful and then just looking up common questions and answering them yourself.

Bruh anything under 60 is freezing to us Floridians

Can you provide insights as to why you think you may have had so much success this cycle even with a sub 500 score?
I applied early (submitted on the first day)! Made sure my written documents were on point content- and grammar-wise. My GPA is High so it would sort of counter my MCAT and my extracurricular activities were pretty good also. Basically, I made sure everything else was great with the exception of my MCAT!!!

Have you looked at the AAMC Matriculation chart data for <500 MCATs, even with 3.8+ GPAs? Just want to make sure you know the actual chances

Dude’s got at least one acceptance. Probably has some wow-X-factor of sorts.

I got an email from Mrs. Reid this morning. Acceptances are supposed to be sent by the end of the month.

I second that, as I have been complete since 10/27...The wait is real....

Didn't the secondary not even go out until early/mid-November?

Either way, I'm sure more decisions will be sent out soon. A prior poster said the adcom was meeting 1/4 aka yesterday, but we wouldn't have any insight into the exact day e-mails would go out.

I know this is a long shot, but has anyone tried sending an ITA email here? Any idea if they're receptive?

Not sure about the in the areas, but I sent an update in and they took it

Anyone receive an II recently? Was told that I'd be hearing back soon about 3.5 weeks ago...lol

Yeah I emailed mid December looking for an updated timeline, and they said I would be hearing back soon. It’s been 4 weeks and still nothing. This makes me very cautious of the school, and how ready the MD program is. I’ve talked to a doctor at another med school and they said it was most likely due to a greater influx of applications than expected. That being said unless it’s the only option I would definitely not put them as a #1 choice until they can stick to timelines and show a more solid program outline.

lmao you need to relax. them telling you "soon" has nothing to do with the quality of their program, how solid it is, or anything else for that matter.

its also laughable to see how information from secondary sources (questionable sources for that matter) are taken as dogma. this forum is such a troll lol

Although, I agree with some of the points listed. I still think that you are not giving them their dues. This school is doing the best it can to attract what they deem as the best candidates. Based on prior posts, it seems like they are sending II every 7-11 days. I know not sticking to timelines sucks but wouldn't you want them to give your application a holistic review? As far as I am concerned, they should take as long as possible before sending their decisions. And if that means postponing some deadlines, I am totally ok with that. Because then, whether rejected or accepted, I would be at peace knowing that school did it's best to review my application.

I am suspecting that the adcom would meet again this Thursday and hopefully by then, we would receive an update (II or more).

I completely agree with you, them telling me soon has nothing to do with the quality of their program. Them telling applicants that they’ll get an admissions decision 2-3 weeks after submitting, and then being completely silent about it for 9 weeks is unacceptable I think even you would agree with that.

They're a new school, finding their footing in the app process. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say, when starting the school, they prioritized faculty, curriculum, clinical sites, *quality* of application review, etc. over the speed of application decisions. They had absolutely no point of reference when setting their projected timelines (though I'd bet that they *have* been reviewing apps 2-3 weeks after submission - it's just decisions that are delayed). Sure, it's inconvenient that things aren't exactly as they said they'd be. But to question the school's legitimacy as a whole is a bit of a stretch. If you truly have that large of an issue with all of this, you can withdraw.

I will change and update your signature for you. 20 II that's close to a 50% return on your primary. Good investment my friend.

Lol I'm on my phone but I'll update later...

Thanks dude, this whole process has been a rollercoaster ride for me. I applied to a lot of schools because I was repeatedly told on these forums that I barely have chances at DO. I guess they were wrong 🙂

Why were you told you had no chance? Maybe a WAMC-type de-brief or a MDApps recap would help others at the end of your cycle if you would be so kind as to post one.

Anyone whose already interviewed/from the area have any advice on things to do? I interview this Friday, and will be getting there pretty early tomorrow. So a good amount of time to explore!

Haven't interviewed but live 15 minutes from the campus. It's in a pretty suburban area, but if you have access to transportation you can go to Las Olas in Downtown Ft. Lauderdale. It'll be the closest area for touristy things.

If you like Japanese/sushi, go to Shinju buffet! It’s literally across the road from the school, and it’s fantastic. It’s like 21 dollars for dinner or 13ish for lunch. It was my treat to myself the night before haha.

For those who have interviewed, how often were you guys outside? My interview is tomorrow and it's supposed to rain, so trying to plan what shoes to wear accordingly. 🙂

There is a really good escape room in Davie that’s close by and a lot of fun. In nearby Pembroke Pines there is an ice skating rink. There’s movie theaters nearby. If the weather allows and you’re there over the weekend, Ft Lauderdale or Hollywood beach. CB Smith Park, Pembroke Lakes Mall, Sawgrass Mall, some good places with Cuban food. Just off the top of my head

Lol any fellow Friday interviewers wanna do an escape room the night before to get our critical thinking juices flowing?

A few times to walk between buildings! I wouldn’t be worried about it though. Everything is covered for the most part. I doubt they’ll make you walk through puddles or rain lol

I was at Nova today to take care of some business. I was thinking "man, I wonder when they'll give me an II, I'm here at least 4-5x a week. :inpain:
