2017-2018 University of Arizona - Phoenix

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Any interview tips from those who have visited this school? This will be my very first medical school interview, and it's my only MD invitation, so I'm feeling quite intimidated!

How come the interview tracker was not updated this week? Looks like UA phoenix is really dishing out the love for OOS applicants, based on the most recent SDN II comments above 😉

Received II this morning. In-State and complete on 8/25. Good luck everyone!

It's interesting to me that you have no posts prior to today and your claim about receiving an II as an in-state student came 30 minutes after my comment claiming the school continues to show a significant amount of "love" to OOS applicants.

I posted my comment today because I received an invite today. I check this forum periodically to see when interview invites have been given as I'm sure many people do. I'm sure others would be interested to have this information.

No, we are definitely interested. Just funny timing...

I would love to see an updated tracker sometime this week or next.

Rejected just now. IS, complete 7/4.

This one hurts a lot. I put so much time and effort in to developing a relationship with this school. I'm crushed.

Just out of curiosity, how did you develop a relationship with the school? I think it's apparent that UA phoenix, relative to most in state schools across the country, isn't very IS friendly....so maybe you'll have better luck elsewhere.

+1 over here; complete 7/29 IS (rural az) Lizzy M 75; little bummed about it.
Lizzy M of 75 and rejected this early from an in-state school? I know stats are definitely not everything, but I think the evidence keeps on piling that UA phoenix is one of the least friendly public medical schools in the nation to its in state applicants. Such a great institution...it's a shame more AZ residents don't get to train here.

Went to a lot of events connected with/put on by the school. Networked and got connected to faculty/administration. A couple other things that I don't want to mention on here, but that give me significant ties to U of A in general.

IS Rejection today. Complete 8/3. Super bummed as this was my #1 pick. Interview in Tucson later this month.

Same. IS and rejected. Also have gone to a ton of campus events and worked with faculty. My IS friend also got rejected at the same exact time as me today. Oh well🙁 this one definitely hurts, but it’s early in the cycle so maybe better luck elsewhere. Good luck to everyone.

Also rejected today. OOS with a bad GPA and good MCAT. Good luck to everyone still in the running! Hope you guys all hear back soon and then absolutely ace the interview.

in-state. LizzyM ~70. 10/2 II. completed 7/15.
does the msar show it to be an IS unfriendly school?
that surprises me since I know a fairly high number of MS2's who are instate, university of arizona grads.

It's all relative... of course the majority of its students are in-state...this is very normal for an in-state school. But if you look at MSAR or their own data, they give out roughly 50% of IIs to IS applicants and 50% to OOS applicants. Most public state schools don't give out such a large percent of II to OOS schools. In fact, many state schools are even less than 20%. Tucson gives out a larger percent of IIs to IS applicants.

Overall, I would definitely say that compared to other state schools across the country (minus California), UA phoenix is relatively unfriendly to IS applicants. It's already a small institution. Despite this, they give out 50% of their interviews to OOS applicants.

Let me add one more comment on this: many people on SDN will advise applicants to only apply to state schools which give out around 50% of interviews to OOS candidates. The assumption being that most state schools are MUCH below this 50% number, therefore, it's a very bad idea to apply to most state schools. Phoenix is on the short list of public state schools which meet this criterion of around 50% of IIs going to OOS candidates, which is why I believe they receive so many applications from California/other states. So yes, compared to other state schools, Phoenix is very friendly to OOS candidates.

Interestingly, if you compare the tracker to MSAR data, it seems like in-state applications are still below the total they received last year (over 800). So a lot more out of state folks are applying.

Bad news for in state AZ folks. I wouldn't be surprised if OOS acceptances and interviews are even higher this year at UA COM Phoenix. They can do this under the guise of a "historically competitive application pool". I wish UA COM Phoenix could love its in state applicants as much as we love them.

Question for you.....why do you feel the need to come into a thread of a school you seem to have a beef with and try to stir the pot? Don't like the mission or how things are handled then you've been invited to talk to admissions but you're being a bit passive aggressive dude.

Editing so that my main point is at the top:

My position is that around 55-60% of all interviews available should go to in-state candidates.

According to MSAR last year, 46% of available interviews went to in-state candidates. That number should increase going forward.

Fair criticism from NicoleBama. I would say...

1. I want to get into this school very badly. I wouldn't say I have a beef with the school because I think it's a great school. I have a beef with their admissions practices because I think they are not friendly to in-state students, relatively speaking.

2. I love the mission. It mentions training future leaders in Arizona (and beyond) and also mentions its ties to Phoenix partners. I think the admissions practices of interviewing so many OOS candidates relative to their class size does not completely reflect their supposed mission.

3. Glen Fogerty and UA Phoenix admissions reads this forum...so I am talking to them.

4. I will try to be less passive-aggressive. Let me be as direct as possible. I think the admissions at this school is highly flawed because compared to the vast majority of public state medical schools in America, UA Phoenix is relatively unfriendly to in-state students.

5. It's a FANTASTIC institution. Great culture. Smart students. Friendly people in the staff. They've been transparent on SDN for many years now. I think my frustration as an arizona applicant stems from my wish that the school was more in-state friendly. I know so many people who were given interviews at Tucson but rejected early from Phoenix. I know so many people over the years who have received multiple MD acceptances from OOS private schools, but denied at Phoenix. Now, I know the admissions process is very complicated, but I think that Phoenix, which receives funding from the state government, should reward its in-state applicants more. There are dozens of qualified in-state applicants who are turned down year after year because the school has a notably friendly attitude towards OOS applicants. These OOS candidates are very smart/talented/etc, but in-state schools, typically, are not as friendly to OOS applicants as Phoenix

Finally, I'll just say that I'll tone it down for the next couple months. I kind of sound like a broken record and have been repeating myself. I don't mean to disparage the students/faculty because I think its' a great school. Again, I just wish that the school was more friendly to IS applicants compared to other in-state schools. Anyways, good luck to those waiting to hear back.

Admissions tracker was updated and looks like there are still around 100 IS interviews left to give out and 100 OOS interviews, based on previous year averages. Still plenty left

Congrats! Could you please provide your stats if you don't mind? URM/ORM and LizzyM. Thank you. And best wishes for the interview.

I submitted my app two hours after the 30-day deadline... do you think they will still consider my application? lolol

How did you find the admissions tracker?

I have heard nothing from this school and I'm OOS and complete 3 months ago. I guess silence better than rejection (at least for Phoenix since they don't do silent rejections).

Well, despite my posts about the OOS favoritism, it's still a long-shot as an OOS applicant. But yes, silence is better than a rejection at Phoenix. Many OOS folks on SDN have been rejected. Good luck

I'm from CA so definitely know what lack of IS favoritism feels like. Some of my state schools i didn't even get secondaries for :/

For those that interviewed already, do you remember if they said acceptances will go out today? I interviewed on 9/11 and I'm just wondering if there is supposed to be any movement.

I interviewed on the same day and I’m hoping to hear from them today!! It was the first interview date for OOS so hopefully they will get back to us soon. I’ll keep you posted in case I do hear from them!

Do you recall if they said for certain we would hear back something regarding a decision today, or if today would be just when they start doing it without necessarily it being today for everyone?

~75, IS, not URM, re-applicant. Interviewed 8/21.

LOL Phoenix is honestly a joke for doing stuff like this. I truly don't care if this comes across as bitter. The matriculation rate of students who have such high MCAT/GPA is probably not high at Phoenix, considering the ultimate MCAT average is only a 509. It's ludicrous to hand out a significant number of interviews to candidates with extremely high stats who are unlikely to go to Phoenix in the first place, yet the school continues to do so.
