Incoming M1 from instate here. I'll be busy with orientation (and then class) starting next week, but tag me on here if you all have any questions as the cycle progresses. I'll help however I can! Good luck!

In state, primary app should be verified tomorrow, no secondaries from UAMS yet (no surprise).

Don't they normally do secondaries by snail mail?
They just changed to electronic secondaries this last cycle. UAMS does send secondaries to all applicants. Once they initiate their process, they will send them when AMCAS notifies them you applied. They do not wait for verification of AMCAS. There aren't any additional essay questions.

Okay that's great. I applied for the 2015 and 2016 cycles and took last cycle off, so that explains that. It's so nice they switched, the snail mail stuff was a pain haha

Ah, I was probably still the Director of Admissions and Recruitment then! I retired a year ago last February. Good luck!

II over phone, IS, one Saturday option in each of October, November, and December.
Was told that the secondaries would be going out in a week and a half.

All Arkansas residents can interview. There is no connection between your qualifications and your ability to schedule an interview. Once you submit your AMCAS app, you can call to schedule an interview. The value in interviewing before December resides in the fact that a small number (20-25+) Arkansas applicants only, with great numbers and excellent overall applications can be reviewed by the Admissions Committee in December and then again in January for possible early offers of acceptance. Good luck all.

It's not exactly your typical secondary essay... I don't know what in-state applicants have to do, but they get an interview just by calling in... Good luck everyone
Secondary essay prompt for out-of-state applicants

LETTER OF STRONG TIES

Non-Arkansas residents who have strong ties to Arkansas are given preference over non-residents without strong ties to the state. Therefore, if you have strong ties to Arkansas (you have lived in Arkansas, you have a parent or close relative who resides in Arkansas, you attend(ed) an Arkansas college, etc.), you must describe your ties to Arkansas in a letter to be uploaded using the Upload Documents section of this application.

MD/PhD COMBINED DEGREE APPLICANTS

The College of Medicine offers a combined MD/PhD degree program. Applicants who selected the MD/PhD program in the AMCAS application and complete the two additional AMCAS application essays should review the program details by copying and pasting the following URL into a browser.

MD/PhD Program | College of Medicine

Complete the MD/PhD program application form on the website and use the Upload Documents section to include this document with your application.

MD/MPH COMBINED DEGREE APPLICANTS

The UAMS College of Medicine offers a combined MD/MPH degree program. Applicants may review the program details by copying and pasting the following URL into a browser.

MD/MPH Program | College of Medicine

To apply to this program, please fill out the “Intent to Pursue Combined Degree Form” and use the Upload Documents section to include the document with your application.

Any OOS people get II's yet? (I have strong ties; moved from Fort Smith to Oklahoma this past May; went to UARK for graduate school and spent a year post-grad working as an SLP in Fort Smith.)

(In state) Received secondary over the weekend and submitted it today. Interviewing in October at the Little Rock campus. Best of luck everyone!

So if I have no ties to Arkansas whatsoever, should I even bother applying? Thanks!!

I'm out of state with one tie to arkansas but I'm applying... Do you happen to be URM?? If so, you could pull that card to get in.

Hey SDN fam: I'm considering applying here - I am OOS from CA, average stats, but non-traditional with heavy medical research background (11 publications (including 5 first authorships in medium to high impact journals) and 14,500 research hours).

Would having completed a 3-month long summer research internship at Arkansas State following freshman year count as a "Strong Tie"? I did live at ASU for 3 months and ended up publishing my findings for w/e that's worth! Also, it's not too late in the cycle to add this school into AMCAS is it?

Thank you for your reply! And nope, but a good "story" (cancer, chronic bone disease, started a foundation for research, etc.), did a post bac that I did well in, decent MCAT score for this school (507 so not great but not bad), and great ECs/LORs/etc.

Yes, I would write a letter of strong ties, including dates, location, details of the research and your mentors, friends here, etc. Every year, there are more applicants from California than from Arkansas. UAMS does not have rolling admissions, so you can submit as long as you do so by November 1st.

Thanks will def add UAMS to my primary app then 🙂

OOS will be reviewed in December to determine who will be invited to interview in January. No rolling admissions. Final decisions made in February.

Anyone OOS and no ties have any II luck thus far?

Considering that less than 1% of out of state people are accepted, I'd say you should especially not apply if you have no ties.

Ah, that’s exciting! I’ll be helping with the 11:30 group that day
Darn, I'll be interviewing at that time. Out of curiosity, how do you get the chance to lead tours/help with interviews? I'd love to help out with the process if I'm lucky enough to get in.

Dang! You’ll be missing out on one heck of a tour! Haha

Super easy honestly. I thought it would be tough to get a day, but I’m actually doing all 3 interview days. They send out an email about 3-4 weeks in advance of the first interview day to see who’s interested and for which days/times. That goes for just about everything here though honestly. If you want to do something/volunteer somewhere, 99% of the time they seem to make it happen for you. Really nice!

lol what a shame!!

Wow that's awesome! Thanks for the good info and thanks for helping out!

So I'm OOS with no strong ties but am from Mississippi. What can I write for the secondary besides "I have not strong ties to Arkansas" ???
