2017-2018 Yale University

Did anyone else think the interview day was a bit odd? We had a lot of free time and didn't meet very many people throughout the day, students or staff.

I had a lot of free time during my day because I had the two latest interviews. Indeed I do wish there had been less down time, but I had the opportunity to attend a lecture, walk throughout the campus with some fellow interviewees and I talked to multiple current students at the cafe downstairs.

Which day were you there? Both the first and second years had an exam week recently which would have made Harkness a ghost town and would have prevented you from attending a class.

Some people end up with a lot of dead time depending on their interview schedule, but generally there are both first years and upperclassmen available to talk to you at different points during the day, and you are usually told about classes you can attend in the morning. If you were here last Friday, then you might have been with me on your tour too.

Edit: If you have any questions that you feel you didn't have the opportunity to ask at your interview, feel free to message me, and I'll answer them to the best of my knowledge.

Also just a heads up that the SDN app stopped working on my phone a few weeks ago, so I'm not able to check in on here all the time like I used to do. If anyone has questions about Yale or their interview day, feel free to message me on here, and I'll usually respond within a day or two.

Does anyone know if those "interviewer evaluations" we filled out at the end of the interview day were anonymous? One would think that our interviewers dont see those evaluations right?

I didn't write anything negative but there was a light criticism so I am hoping that doesn't hurt me reciprocally.

This shouldn't hurt you at all. Admissions will use the info to help train or advise the interviewers in the future, so it's good if you let them know about something that you didn't think was quite right. Yale is big on feedback. We fill out evaluations of instructors and courses pretty frequently in the curriculum, and student-driven changes occur all the time. I imagine the same concept applies to admissions.

Any tips or advice for the interview here? Really interested in this school and hoping my interview goes well

I’m going to paste what I messaged someone earlier today:

The Yale interview is pretty straightforward like most med school interviews are these days, so you don't need to worry about getting grilled or having to do anything unusual. Your interviews will both be open file, so you should be prepared to answer any questions about your entire application. As you probably expect at any top tier school, you should be ready to talk about your research experience, especially if you think there are future directions related to it that you want to pursue. I can't answer for every single interviewer you might encounter, but in general you should expect your interviews here to be low key and conversational. Your interviewers know already that you're smart, so what they're really looking for is how good of a fit you are for the Yale System. You should be ready to talk about why you like Yale System, and you'll be reminded plenty about how it works at the beginning of the day when you talk to Barbara Watts or Richard Silverman in admissions.

Does anyone know what the interview availability schedule looks like at the moment? I think there's a good chance I'll have to reschedule my current interview but I won't definitively know for another couple weeks. Wondering if the schedule is filling up and I should try to reschedule now or just wait until I'm certain...

Just interviewed here. Pretty interesting day, while I think both my interviews were "fine" I didn't really click with my first interviewer, so I get to sit in neuroticism and over think my interview responses for the next five months...yay. Also, during my group tour we never actually went into any of the Yale affiliated hospitals, we pretty much stayed at the medical school and libraries. Is this normal?

Going to the hospitals would take far too long. I havent been to the affiliated hospitals in any of my interviews.

Huh, I see. Thank you.

Edit: I just realized you said you haven't been to any affiliated hospitals and not just at Yale. Yale is the first of mine where I didn't go to the hospital.

Thats crazy to me. Been on 6 interviews havent been to a single hospital.
edited my original post, I misread your post and thought you were only referring to Yale. Of the 7 interviews I've attended, Yale (and maybe Einstein, but they don't have a traditional interview day) is the first one that did not show interviewees the hospital. Even at Geisel, where the hospital was a distance away, they shuttled the interviewees to the hospital and gave a tour and then a seperate medical school tour later in the day.

That's interesting. Yea my experiences weren't like that at all. Honestly I don't need to see the hospital. Once you see one you have seen them all.

Yes, that’s normal for the tour. We don’t have enough time to take you into the hospital, and there’s not really much to see that’s different from most private hospitals except the atrium is really nice. If I could change something about the way we do our interview day, I would stretch out the tour to include a few more sites like the hospital and simulation center, while reducing some of the down time in the morning.

Thanks! I had a lot of fun during the tour (especially that basement room full of brains). I didn't really notice I didn't see the hospital till I arrived back at my Airbnb lol.

Okay so I’ve gotten probably like 7-8 reminder emails leading up to my interview next week. Is this normal or am I forgetting to do something?

I used to give tours when I was a MS1. In our "training," they always told us to take people by the hospital. When I did so originally, I found that 1) it made everyone late for the next thing or we rushed too much AND 2) we just took you to the atrium which was silly and doesn't actually show you anything. I ended up opting it out because I thought it was better for the students, and I would ALWAYS say something about this at the beginning of my tours, such as "I know that the main reason you're here is for the hospital, but we're a tour group who would only be able to go into the atrium, so I'd much rather spend time showing you around the rest of campus. If you'd like to visit the hospital afterwards, you should feel free to!"

I wish lol. I’m guessing it has to do with me scheduling my interview 10 weeks after I received it. Did you really not get any reminders?
Not really just an email to select a lunch(do not get the buffalo sandwich unless you want buffalo sauce everywhere in your container), and the preonterview dinner invite.

That makes a lot of sense. Welp, I hope I’m privileged enough to revisit and see it for second look.

I did not get any reminders and I interviewed in September. I can't imagine how reminder emails could have any bearing on your candidacy, but who knows

I received one two weeks out and another one week out before my interview; also, yeah @Serine Minor my tour didn't go to the hospital either!

For anyone that has interviewed- did they mention what the specific day to hear back in March is? They didn't mention it at my interview but I know in the past they have given a day we can expect to hear back. Thanks!

They might tell you the week that it'll come out, but the exact day is often decided the week of based on my experience in working with the Admissions Office in the past. (Don't know the week, but I doubt that they'll give the day.)

Any international students who received IIs?

Is sending a letter of interest (not intent) worth it here? This is currently my top choice school and I'd like to share that if possible

To me, it makes greater sense to send in application updates along with a section reiterating your interest in Yale. A standalone letter of interest might not make much difference considering the fact that you already completed a whole essay regarding your interest in Yale for your secondary.

Yeah that makes sense. I was really sold because of my interview day, but I don't want to prematurely send a letter of intent. Not sure where I'll get accepted this cycle and what financial aid packages will look like, so I don't want to make any promises I can't keep.

If you already interviewed it probably would make more sense to send it closer to March. Although what do I know.

I did after I was waitlisted.

EDIT: Just noticed you said "interest," what I sent was an unequivocal letter of intent. I don't think I would reccomend a letter of "interest" at all actually.

Complete last day of August. Still NO II from this love of my life school. Have they already sent me to the dump? (Please post your complete dates if you get IIs esp if they are earlier than mine!!)

Congratulations hydr!!! It seems like its attached to an impressive, modern hospital center.

Wow congrats! That's way quick after your complete date. What do you think pushed you to the top??? Would love some advice here haha 🙂
Honestly, I'm not entirely sure. I technically submitted my secondary in August and was just waiting for a rec letter to come in, so maybe they had already reviewed my app and were just waiting for that letter?
