I'm hoping to score a research position in the next week or two but I'm not really too sure what to do about my waitlist. I'd feel terrible going through their onboarding process just to leave if I'm fortunate enough to get picked off the waitlist.

^ I have a job offer to start this August, on one WL and tba decision for another school. Haven't signed contract yet. Hope you get off the waitlist soon!

i am honestly not sure. I think for schools that already have spots you might see movement on the first, - like EVMS, for example, already gave out a few acceptances this week. But for schools that legitimately are waiting for the movement day , - probably not. They will need at least a day to pull up the reports and sift through things. But thats my thought, i am not sure if i am right

I think we will see movement on May 3rd, which is a Friday. Some school threads last year had multiple acceptances on the first Friday of May.

I feel you on that. Hopefully we both get an acceptance by next weekend!

Does anyone else ever feel upset about the fact that the reason people on the WL have to wait so long is because we are waiting for people with multiple acceptances to make a decision? It feels like their convienence is being put ahead of our emotional well being.

as someone with multiple acceptances i can tell, - it is not always those ppl's fault. financial packages are dragging, and without them it is really hard to make a choice. At least that was my problem.

Aren’t the loan amounts already posted online? And as far as grants are concerned, i think it’s very rare for schools to give out grants based on need.

However I do agree that for some people it’s a necessity to wait for financial aid. So why doesn’t AMCAS institute a policy where schools have to process financial packages for those people by a certain date? And then the 4/30 deadline can be pushed earlier as well.

Anyone who doesn’t get a scholarship and doesn’t have a level of financial disadvantage that would justify need based aid doesn’t need to have a financial package to make their decision. They can just go on MSAR to figure out tuition and COA.

no, loan amounts are not necessarily posted. One of my schools, for example: i was accepted last week of february, i STILL do not know any details about finances. NO DETAILS AT ALL. even though i keep calling them. and i know that no one received financial packages from them yet. i dropped everything except EVMS, because it is my top choice, but up to that point, - i was very confused. the schools are "recommended" to send them out before april 30th, but they do not have to. and that certainly makes a difference

i know you are upset. trust me i know. that being said, schools do give small scholarships, and everyone deserves to know what exactly they will be paying before making such an important decision.

after you are accepted, school processes your financial aid, pulls up all your data from FAFSA, and posts specifically how much financial aid you will be getting if you enroll there. These numbers can differ from school to school. THen you seen how much more you need on top of that, and apply to GradPlus loan (or whatever it is call), that also takes a while to go through. It can take a while for everything to be approved. Lets say you have an acceptance to a private school you really like and a public school that you dont like as much, - you want to make sure you can afford that private school, so you will be waiting to drop that public acceptance till all your loans go through, and your paperwork is approved. And that takes a while.

This would be easier if schools would just say “we won’t process financial aid until after the multiple acceptance deadline” if they don’t intend to release it earlier.

That way someone would be more likely to not hold on to their acceptance and WL movement would start earlier

hahahahhahahahhaha. My regular FAFSA that is automatically approved was only 42K for Drexel. The rest you are expected to take out using Grad Plus, or private loans. Both of those are not guaranteed. You have to apply, and be approved,

42k is the maximum allowed in one year for Stafford loans--has nothing to do with Drexel and they had no influence on that number.

true. but this is exactly my point, - you WILL have to take out more from other loans. Also, you could be approved for LESS though, if your expected family contribution is high. Hypothetically.

I held several acceptances for a long time as a direct result of schools not giving me all the information in a timely manner.

This isn’t necessarily true. Just knowing COA isn’t enough. Schools give out varying amounts of need based aid, and schools define “need” differently. Ex: One school I was accepted to gave me no need-based grants. A different school gave me substantially more with the same financial information. I had no way of knowing that until they put together my financial aid package. Schools may also have late notifications of scholarship offers- I received a scholarship just this past week.

There are also a few other ways schools sometimes drag their feet. Ex: I am especially interested in one school because of a clinical branch program that you have to apply for after acceptance. Being accepted to this program would make a substantial difference in my interest in the school. Again, I was only informed about the results of that this past week.

I’m sure there are some applicants who hold multiple acceptances for weeks/months with all the information. Which puts people on WLs in a bad position. But many delay making a decision because they simply don’t have all the cards on the table until late in the game. The fact is, I didn’t get all the information I needed to make an informed decision until the middle of this past week.

People absolutely should be conscientious of those on WLs and not hoard acceptances just because they can. But many times, it is more about the schools than the people holding acceptances.

thank you! it really upsets me when ppl blame us for "hoarding multiple acceptances". I have been working very hard for this (as well as all of you, i am sure), and for a very long time. And i owe it to myself to make the best decision based on all the facts i could have.

I’m pretty sure you can get federal loans for the entire COA (pending credit check for gradplus) regardless of EFC. Even if your institution requires family info for internal scholarships, FAFSA considers you independent and therefore you can get the full amount of loans.

I think there’s a mix of both. Like if you have two or three schools that you would absolutely be happy at and love equally for different reasons, then it makes sense to hold onto them while you carefully decide.

But if you have an acceptance somewhere and then get in somewhere that you knew was definitely higher up on your list and you’d definitely go to over your current place, it makes no sense to hold onto that first school. You know you aren’t going there. At that point, it does seem like hoarding.

Wanting to hold onto acceptances because you worked hard for them isn’t a good enough reason imo. While it doesn’t start out as a zero sum game, when we get into April, holding onto a seat you know you aren’t going to take is keeping a seat away from an applicant who may not have any.

Yes , I completely agree . Which is why - YOU KNOW, I immediately gave up Vermont , and as soon as I decided between Drexel and ETSU , gave up Drexel . And as soon as I got into EVMS I sent email to ETSU . What I meant though is that I want to have all details before making the decision . For example , I was waiting for financial aid information from ETSU .

I believe this is true. Unless someone has something really weird going on in their credit history, they shouldn’t have issues getting loans.

BUT I think there is a misconception on this thread that because of this, having a financial aid package isn’t necessary before deciding on a school.

Each school gives out varying amounts of need-based grants as part of their financial aid. Some give them to very few people, other schools consider higher levels of income.

Especially for (probably a large number) of applicants whose family isn’t super-wealthy but still has a decent income, this makes a HUGE difference in total loan amount. Ex: One school I was accepted to gave me $0 need based aid. Another gave me $20,000. There is simply no way of knowing that until schools give out financial aid packages. So when schools delay releasing this info, many applicants hold on to acceptances longer.

I only posted because I didn’t want anyone to think that they wouldn’t be able to cover COA if their parents have high income and aren’t able or willing to support them!

Edit: I agree about getting finaid packages for schools. Mine varied greatly and that’s how I started making decisions.

Btw - you can be denied Grad Plus loan is you have more than 2000 in collections Over the past 2 years, or if you are delinquent on more than 2000 over the past 90 days . Also - if you have history of tax lien , wage garnishes , bankruptcy over the past 5 years .
The good news is that credit score itself doesn’t matter . So , if you’ve been having financial troubles and you don’t have co-signer it can be tough (even if you fall under one of above categories , you can still get approved with appropriate co-signer)

You can safely wait another month to open your 2019-2020 application. In the meantime you can be collecting your information like the number of hours you have spent on activities, pre-order yourself a spring official college transcript if you are still a student, and work on revising your essays.

It is a lot of wasted work for a financial aid department to put together financial aid packages for students who will never end up going to that school. That is why many schools wait until later to make your offers. Also, med school is not like college, there are many fewer outright scholarships and most have to take out loans for school.
Now before you all flame me :flame: I DO know that it is a very stressful and long application process and it has been almost a YEAR since some of you started it. You are sick of your friends, enemies, frenemies, and family asking you, all the time, every dang question in the world. :slap:

Once you are a doctor you are going to make the best decision you can, using the information you have available at the time, to care for your patients. They need this from you and expect it. You will seldom be able to wait for every single test result to be in your hands before taking decisive action. It doesn't mean you should be rash, it means you should learn when you have enough information to do something.
This is an important thing to think about, and I think you should think about it.

You are confusing cost of attendance figures with financial aid packages. Yes the COA figures are available. If you live frugally you can very likely spend less than they estimate on your rent and food. If you end up in a super expensive city you will probably come close to the estimates.

I'm amazed by you folks who can go right from undergrad to start med school! Oh man, I was so burned out after college, I probably would have imploded in med school if I hadn't taken time off. You're the real MVPs!

both me and that person are non-traditional, so we are not "right from undergrad" in the traditional sense. This is my second bachelor's, for example. SO, it is weird. I am also old 🙂 hahahhaha. so i am very motivated to FINALLY START FOR CHRIST"S SAKE 🙂)

I'm 35 lol. I did 90 credits of college right from high school, then took several years off to play music and join the military. Then I finished my degree and applied for a postbacc through the military. So I hardly went straight through. Took a long time to get to this point actually.

yeah, to piggy-back off @Matthew9Thirtyfive , i am 33. got my first bachelors in finance, then business masters, then Army, then decided to go to medical school, and got Biochemistry BS, while applying. So i am graduating in two weeks, and starting EVMS in august, but i am definitely very non-traditional.

It was completely unexpected! I was dragged along to the Avengers this morning, which as I'm sure you guys know is over 3 hours long. About an hour into the movie I feel my phone buzzing. I take a look and it's from an area code where my top choice is. I'm super nervous but don't dare take the call or I'd face the wrath of the full theater. I show my boyfriend the call and we wait for the voicemail. Sure enough it's an acceptance call and my boyfriend and I both break out into tears as quietly as we could. I then had to sit through another two hours before I could tell anyone else!

I can't believe it - this is a dream come true. I'm honestly a little in shock.

You also could have left the theater lol. But yes, thank you on behalf of everyone in the theater for not answering your phone. It saddens me though that not being inconsiderate and rude is something worthy of adulation nowadays lol.

Haha you're right I definitely could. But I figured by the time I got up and "excuse me"'d my way out of the middle of the row it would have went to VM anyway!

I let mine go to voicemail too, but that was because I thought it was spam lol. Spam callers never leave a vm though so when it popped up I listened to it. I heard his voice (I’ve met him several times since he is heavily involved in our postbacc) and immediately called him back haha.

I remember when I got my first (and so far only) call. I was waiting for it all week constantly checking then I actually missed the call and the phone was right next to me but it was silent. I saw a missed call from the area code and immediately knew

Wow what a memory you’ll always have. I can only imagine rhe euphoria mixed with avenger’s emotions you must have had haha. Congrats! Surprised they called on a Sunday
 
my fellow waitlistees, does anyone else's school facebook page show no changes in members size/a much higher number than class size? my WL school has a size of 123 but the page has 160 lol even tho the school told us half of their accepted usually turn down the offer.
