2019-2020 Columbia VP&S

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does everyone who applied get the email communication from a student admissions rep, or only those who have interviewed?

FWIW it's an individual student who reaches out to you so your individual student might be busy or a bit slow on it. I wouldn't read into it.
Not reading anything into it... someone not on SDN asked me about if it was all applicants or just those who interviewed. Just trying to answer the question for her. So far it's still not clear. Those few who replied were not clear about if they interviewed already. oh well!

ETA: I received the email last week.

My dude, I was not responding to you or telling you specifically not to read into it; sorry if it seemed that way.

Just giving my 2 cents 🙂

Are you sure interviews end mid Jan? Website says invites are sent through Jan and in threads from the past few years, people were still getting invites in Jan. Has something changed?
Those are the interviews from applicants who cancel. Yes there is a chance there but I wouldn’t expect dozens cancelling from Columbia.

i interviewed here fairly recently and this along with another school were tied for my “dream” schools. One of my interviewers said something kind of odd to me: “you’d do well here but you know it’s competitive and numbers and stuff matter.” My numbers are on the lower side for Columbia and Columbia does interview a lot of applicants compared to how many they accept. I’m a little bummed because I’d rather not have a school invite me if they don’t think I’m competitive. It was my second interview in the second half of the day. I feel like based on this comment, my chances aren’t great. I’m fortunate to have another acceptance at a comparable school with a full ride but that school has a curriculum issue and if I got in to Columbia, I would likely pick Columbia over that school. I’m wondering if it’s worth sending updates or a letter of interest? Its definitely a bad idea to mention that I would happily go to Columbia over my other option, right? I feel like that’s a bit trash to do that even if it’s true....?? I’m not sure if I’m reading into her comment too much :/ but it did really deflate my hopes...

First, you receiving an interview invitation to Columbia means that they loved something on your application that meant they had to interview you (grades included) which means that you are competitive in your own way. It is up to you what you want to do. I would say to send a letter of interest. If Columbia is your top choice, then feel free to say it! I'm not sure what her authority is in the school but know that in the end the interview (and your grades) are part of what they look at before making a final decision.

Okay so what’s our consensus on this thank you letter acknowledgement? I got one email confirming they had been uploaded to the portal and another email saying the “keep you strongly in mind” thing that everyone’s talking about. Everyone gets this, right?

everyone gets it if you submit a thank you letter.

I submitted letters back in late October and got them the acknowledgment today so I think there’s just some lag.
kk same, I submitted late october so maybe i'll hear this week. thanks for the reassurance and the killer username

does anyone have any advice for submitting a combined letter of interest/update now? or just do an update (i have a few, research pubs/presentation, finished grad degree, started new job) since a letter of interest may be too early? how about length? i wrote a draft that's both update and interest and it's nearly 2 pages lmao which is probably too long. @WedgeDawg would you have any input for this?? or any other current students/alums have any opinions on this?

thank you for this kind vote of confidence btw!! 🙂 it's hard to tell myself that and I hope they wouldn't waste resources on people they wouldn't really want to be a part of their student body but who knows how any of this works and it's nerve wracking for everyone. she was super nice and did say that her job was to advocate for me and she'd do the best she can but that there was some element out of her control so it wasn't completely mean lmao oh well. but will make my interest clear and hope for the best!!

Did anyone use the overnight stay at Bard Hall? If so, is there any available parking around? I will be driving in

I know we upload updates to portal... but do they even see them? Anyone emailed them as well the updates/let them know you uploaded updates as wel? Or do we just hope they get a loud ding to check it lol

When I submitted my update letter, I uploaded it on the portal and emailed them letting them know that I updated an update letter.

Just wondering, are you doing a pre invite update?

what if you have absolutely nothing of substance for an update but you want to tactfully communicate how desperate you are?
In that vein, how do you tactfully communicate that by all rules of logic you correctly have not received a II, but it would be like.....pretty chill if they could send one anyways?

"Don't take this as a bribe (I would never), but I'm just saying if I were to get an interview invite, I have a massive cache of Beanie Babies(tm) in my apartment that might accidentally end up in NYC for some reason."

I'll be a ray of hope for y'all- II today, and I was complete 7/26
Not much of a ray of hope for September and later applicants🙁 Ive seen, I think, about 1 or 2 post-labor day complete people get an II. Seems like they almost exclusively go to earlier apps

Yeah, I almost feel like September and October apps just aren't being reviewed at all. I mean, they can't all be trash? I knew there was a disadvantage in applying late, but I hadn't realized it'd be this bad 🙁 Lesson learned

also to put a little more hope out there: my LizzyM is 71

Secondary was August 29th, complete late September, and I was rejected from Basset separately so I was fully prepared to take the L on VP&S.
When I tried to sign up for an interview, no dates were available. I thought the email was a mistake 😕
