2019-2020 UT Austin (Dell)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Super excited to be attending here after pre-matching this most recent application cycle, happy to answer any questions y'all may have regarding the application process!

Dell is literally the perfect medical school for me. I love the case study curriculum(most of my degree program was case studies) and I love the Masters of Healthcare Transformation degree(my research has been in business innovations in primary healthcare, which is also a research focus of the school). Is there anything I can do as a low stat, good EC, out of state resident with strong ties, to show how bad I want to attend?

They screen hard for secondaries. They give secondaries to roughly 20% of applicants. The secondary is a video response so you could spin your passion into one of your answers.

While it does seem Dell’s stats have been trending upwards the last three years, the school definitely places a focus on intangibles and the applicant’s individual mission - more so than most other schools in my own opinion (hence the video secondary). It’s important that you can coherently explain how your own experiences, goals, and personal aspirations align with the vision of Dell Medical School and what they’re trying to accomplish as an institution. Stats merely get your foot in the door - how you make a case for yourself in the primary and secondary applications, and eventually the interview, end up being the deciding factor. Do keep in mind, however, that Dell only offers secondaries to about 20% of all applicants and invites 6% to interviews. If Dell does not end up panning out, don’t be discouraged - there are plenty of amazing institutions around Texas and the rest of the country that I’m sure would benefit from your past experiences.

Does anyone know the earliest that Dell begins sending secondary invites?

I transmitted 5/22 and am IS, LM 76. Do they send them out at different times or am I SOL?

nervous about the video secondary! if anyone has any advice or tips, i'd greatly appreciate 🙂

Just finished it recently, and as someone who is pretty camera-shy, it did not seem as bad as I thought. For me, the anticipation leading up to it was more nerve-wracking, but when you actually do it you realize how short and relatively simple it is. With only 3 questions and 2 minute responses, you will probably only have time to expand on one or two points/stories each, so I would suggest depth over breadth. Utilize the practice question to get used to being recorded and answering to your video camera. Have a good feel for how long two minutes is (it's really short) so you can avoid missing your main idea. In terms of preparation, there's not much you can do, but by doing the primary and other secondaries, we have already reflected a lot on our significant experiences, so keeping those in mind was helpful for me. I think they're just looking for a genuine representation of who you are, not a scripted response or anything. The whole process took less than 30 minutes, which I am very grateful after all these essays! Find a quiet space, and afterwards do not dwell because it's out of our hands. We all got this

Anyone else get the secondary? When do they usually send them out?

I’m curious if interviewers will have access to your secondaries, or any info from it

They typically will; assume anything you discussed is fair game. Like with most schools, interviews are just meant to be a conversation. I'd review other threads on this site for how to handle the interview, as there is tons of excellent information on this site that helped me personally 🙂

I would assume it is easier for an interviewer to watch a video before hand to familiarize themselves with you.

Has anyone who has requested a written secondary heard back yet?

So since the secondary is video format, I am guessing I can't really prepare for this in advance? Should I just wait until Dell tells me something? My TMDSAS is not processed yet and I am currently prewriting secondaries for other schools.

Sounds like a good plan
