Yes, submitted July 19th and got a complete email on July 20th. Because it was a Saturday, I thought it might not have gone through ... or maybe my mind is trying to find excuses ... 😕

If you have received a complete email, there is nothing you can do other provide an update letter (if they accept one). But its still too early. I wouldnt do anything until lets say November? But i also dont know the best advice

Rejected because of MCAT. They want a 506 MCAT for interviews.

Thank you! Can you tell me more about the role of 1st and 2nd year medical students in the HOME project and Multidisciplinary Clinic? Were you able to manage a good school-life balance during the first two years? How did you cope with having exam(s) every week? What is the dessert life like?

The HOME project is awesome (though it’s been going through some changes this past year). Currently there are two shelters (Central Arizona Shelter Services - CASS which is an adults shelter and Vista Colina which is a family shelter). The HOME students are multidisciplinary from programs across campus including dental, psych, OT, PT, etc and have a weekly clinic at each location free to clients. We also have a fairly well stocked pharmacy. Student teams see the patients. Each clinic has at least one PA or Physician preceptor who the student teams present the patients to. Then they determine treatment. They are working on opening another clinic at another shelter focusing on preventative health services. Students used to go only on a volunteer basis but now there is a requirement for some programs to go.

As for the multi-specialty clinic, the school is developing new electives all the time that give you exposure over there during M1&2 but currently exposure is not part of the main curriculum.

School-life balance: depending on what type of learner you are, most classes are recorded and not mandatory attendance so you can handle your schedule however you need to.

The exam schedule: honestly, it’s obviously not super enjoyable but you get used to it. It keeps you very on top of the material which is a plus. I also liked that it meant your grade was not based on just one or two exams each quarter because frankly it’s not uncommon to be off your game for an exam. (The fact that there is still grade is another discussion but doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon.) it’s worth mentioning though that this years class (2023) is the first class to benefit from lecture hours being reduced by 17% — we will see how that changes things.

The desert: it’s hot. People say it’s a dry heat, but so is your oven and you wouldn’t want to live in there. Lol just kidding (mostly). Honestly, depending on the climate that you are used to, in the summer it’s just going from AC to AC. Not any different from going from heater to heater if you are used to snow. You can live anywhere for two years. After that, you can do rotations in AZ, CA or IL.
 
Just submitted secondary today. After you submit the secondary, will they update your app with the Rec letters from AACOMAS?

Thank you for being willing to work with us neurotic pre-meds! 😆 Do you have any advice for the interview day? I've tried to gather as much information as possible regarding the interview format, but there isn't much information out there. Do you know the format of the interview(s)? Do you have any other general tips regarding having a successful interview day?
 
Folks they want a 507 to be interviewed. I attended a tour because I live in AZ and the counselor legit said 507 or below you will not be accepted here anything above with a standard conversational interview = acceptance ..

I got an interview 9/16 anyone gonna be there ?

Do you know how they look at multiple mcat scores?

Hi,

I was verified on 8/22 and received 8 secondaries so far--2 of which are from AZCOM (secondary received on 8/23) and CCOM (received on 8/22). I see that the general consensus is to not apply with an MCAT below 508. I have an extremely low score (498) but 3.76 cGPA, 3.58 sGPA, and 3.91 overall non-science GPA. I have an extensive amount of clinical experience. Should I not submit the secondary due to my score?

Dont do it yet. Wait till december or even later. Because with that low of mcat score they will most probably reject you at this early stage. But once you start getting into early next year, the students accepted will probably start getting accepted to other lower tuition, maybe closer to home schools and theyll drop AZCOM. then they'll start accepting more like 502-506 and then even later closer to May, they will start accepting a little lower than that GPA or MCAT IF accepted students start withdrawing their acceptances. Sometimes, some years, students stay put and there's very little movement on the waitlist though. So I cant say that it will happen. But you never know unless you try. If you get rejected, then oh well. but you want to give yourself the best shot, submit later to possibly get on wait list. Personally, I think AZCOM is worth it though. They are one of the few schools that integrate ultrasound specifically and the faculty/student atmosphere is like a family type of atmosphere. As a first-year here, I can legit say that everyone here is very helpful and encourage you and the open-door policy is legit and is unmatched anywhere else that I know of at least. Faculty really want you to succeed here and its nice knowing you have support.

Thank you so much for your feedback and advice. I will definitely continue to persevere and give it my all! I ended up getting 20/28 secondaries so far, so I have to push through (didn't prewrite and didn't expect to get secondaries so quickly).
 
Guys, so what exactly is the MCAT cutoff they want? People have been saying it's 506, 507, 508 on this thread.... I have a 507 and was complete on 08/17. But I haven't heard anything back yet.

Don't sweat it. Btw, I just want to clarify to the readers that my description of what might happen throughout the year isn't inside information that someone told me, this is just my deductive reasoning based on how this last cycle went. As I said it usually varies by how many students stay put or how many drop just because they got accepted somewhere closer to home or some other reason. But the point of my banter was, if you're spending that much money on the app (even though its not terribly high), I would maximize possibility to at least get on the waitlist. You've got a solid GPA (I hope with more advanced science courses than just pre-med requirements), so I think once they start accepting lower MCAT scores, you'll have an increased chance to get on the waitlist. Once you're on that list then anything can happen. I've heard of people getting accepted on orientation day because there was a last minute drop. SO keep your heads up guys

Practice your standard questions and you’re golden. Prepare to sweat during your tour. Hopefully you’re one of the first groups so you can chill earlier. Get ready to bawk at that total cost of attendance summary sheet. Might need to sell a kidney a two or become stripper over the weekends. Otherwise cool students, good campus, and nice faculty.

Typically, what’s AZCOM (and CCOM actually) do is they put scores below the 506-508 threshold on “pre-interview hold” meaning they won’t revisit your application until after Jan 1st. Many of my classmates were on this list and are now 3rd years. With all the effort that you’ve put in so far, the only way to get a definite no is not to try.

The format (unless it has changed significantly this year) is a small interview panel consisting of basic science faculty, one clinical faculty and one student/recent grad. Honestly, the most feedback I’ve heard from my classmates leads me to say, this is kind of a brutal interview. One of the questions, in variably is either a difficult ethical question or a difficult question related to the current world climate. For example, three years ago in the height of the Zika epidemic, I was asked for form a comprehensive management strategy. I’ve heard from my classmates about other hot-button questions (physician assisted suicide, opioid addiction, etc). Most of us didn’t leave feeling great. But they aren’t looking for the best answer out there. Just, be thoughtful and not abrasive. Hang in there!

Interviewed today at AZCOM and had a great experience. The faculty were top-notch. So friendly and welcoming. The stress level was very low, it was clear that their top priority was to make us feel comfortable and relaxed. I did get a tough question or two in the interview itself, but I don’t think they’re looking for right or wrong answers, so don’t sweat it too much for those how have yet to interview!
