I submitted in the middle of July but haven't even gotten a complete email. Is this normal or should I be emailing someone??

I think that a lot of people don't get a complete email and it doesn't seem to make any difference. I received an II without a complete email and I remember reading that from others as well, although I don't remember if that was in this thread or last year's.

I don't imagine that it would hurt to check with them, though, for piece of mind.

Same, never got a complete email either

I submitted my application in July and I still haven't heard anything back. Should I reach out to the school to check on my application, just in case?

Congrats to everyone that has heard so far. I applied very late this cycle (got the pre-requisite course email invitation on Oct 13), but I'm still hopeful because this is my first choice.

How long after all documents and the secondary is received did folks get this prerequisite email? I haven't gotten this email. Or does that mean my application will not make it to that stage in the process?

I was complete on 9/30 and received the prerequisite email on 10/8

I'm with you afrench, got prereq email on October 8 and still waiting to hear back. Hopefully we get some good news soon.

Hey guys, I have an interview coming up on 11/14 - had a few questions about the Public Health Service track; is the NIH no longer an option for the PHS? Really struggling to pick a branch in the preference form.

What is this hold list? Was there a separate email sent for the hold or is the same as the one sent a couple of weeks back about "waiting for more applicants/etc"?

That's what I assumed a hold was :nailbiting: You mean those aren't the same things?

Just medically disqualified. Good luck to everyone applying here!
I got medically disqualified on 2 conditions. Contact the commissioning officer if accepted - waivers are easy to come by I heard. Your acceptance is independent of your medical qualification. I emailed them over a week ago but haven't heard from them yet.

Currently, NIH is not an option for PHS students, and IHS is the only PHS agency funding PHS students at USU. This may change in the future but for now IHS is the only sure thing. PHS is currently prioritizing clinical billets in agencies like IHS, since that is where the greatest need is. There have been talks for years about a VA track for PHS students at USU but it's not yet operational. Feel free to send me a DM if you have specific questions about PHS.

Regardless of which service you choose your experience will always be what you make of it, and you can have a great career as a physician in any one of the services.

Would it be too late to apply for USU now? I got a recruitment email from them a couple days ago. I had never heard of USU before, but I did a little research about it and I think it's a really good fit for me.

Are there any more interviews taking place at USU atm? Latest dates of these interviews? A bit disappointed in the lack of communication from admissions (only because of my interest in this particular program).

yeah, I have one on November 7th and I believe there are available dates after that as I was given the option to choose a later date if I needed to

There are interviews scheduled through January and some potentially after that. You’ve still got time.

Got an email today asking about a missing pre-requisite. Didn’t think I was going to hear anything from them because I was complete very early. Gives me hope!

Do you think if we don't hear back after a certain date there's no hope for us? I just got the completion email yesterday and that was the first piece of correspondence I've gotten since I submitted my application.

There interviews dates can be found here: USUHS interview dates

I got an invitation to interview about a month before my interview date, so I'd say I wouldn't be too worried until late December

Hello!

I was hoping to hear your insight on branch preference. I was thinking AF - does this put me at any sort of disadvantage when it comes to getting into the school? I've read that Army has the most slots, etc; any advice?

Thanks so much for your help! I really appreciate it.

You should confirm this with your admissions counselor and with CAPT Liotta when you interview on what their procedures are for this year (they get these questions all the time and it's a completely appropriate question to ask), but to my understanding, how you rank your preferences does not have any impact on the admissions decision or your chances of getting a seat, as long as you include all four services in your ranking (i.e., you don't mark any of the services as "I would not accept an appointment in this service" on your preference sheet).

For example, say you rank AF as your first choice and Army as your second choice, and you indicate that you would be willing to accept an appointment in the Army on your preference sheet. If by the time you are offered admissions there are no AF slots left but there are still Army slots available, the school will call you and give you the choice of staying on the waitlist for an AF slot or accepting an Army slot. If you decide to stay on the waitlist for an AF slot, or you listed AF as the only service you're interested in, then you run the risk of not getting into the school at all.

By the way, if you (or anyone else reading this) wants to put PHS as their first choice but are apprehensive because there are only 2 PHS slots, my advice is that this shouldn't stop you from putting PHS as your first choice. If the school wants to admit you but there are no PHS slots left, they will go down your preference choices and offer you any available slot with your 2nd, 3rd or 4th choice, depending on which service has an open slot.

Again, verify this with your admissions counselor and with CAPT Liotta, but my understanding is that as long as you don't mark any of the services as "I would not accept an appointment in this service" you shouldn't worry about decreasing your chances of getting a slot.

Does anyone know when the commissioned officer training will take place?

Has anyone received an interview invite recently, and if so what dates are they scheduling for?

Does anyone know if any one who received the "favorably disposed to you" hold email last year ended up getting an interview? I am getting anxious about not hearing anything, this school is my top choice!

@goldchallenge When did they let you know if you got PHS or not? I was told that a decision wont come until AT LEAST December and the suspense is killing me, especially since I think other acceptees already have branch assignments.

My experience isn't really applicable since the thing that got me held up was getting the letter of approval to apply signed off by my chain of command (i was already a PHS officer when I applied to USUHS). What I know for sure is that by mid-late January both PHS slots were already filled.

Also, you could reach out to the PHS company commander if you havent already. She should be sble to give you the most accurate info.

Edit: removed unrelated quote

I’m not super sure. I was talking to my host when I was there for an interview and we didn’t get into exact, but I imagine it would be a few months before matriculation. I interviewed the same day as you, by the way!

I’m wondering the same thing. I just got the hold email today. After a quick glance through last year’s forum, I saw at least a few people get the II after being put on hold. There is still hope for us it seems.

Is there a place to submit an application update for this school?

Does anyone know if any AF or Navy applicants selected as alternates were ultimately offered slots any of the last few years? Thanks!

I emailed updates to the admissions counselor who was assigned to me and she added my updates to my file. I think there are three and they are assigned based on last name!

Anyone know if they cover moving costs to the school and when base pay starts coming in? Need to start planning for my dependents.

Yes, they cover moving costs (as long as your starting point is a certain number of miles away from the school. I think it is 50 miles, but dont quote me on that). There are some stipulations (service specific) about the steps you need to take to make sure the costs are covered, so make sure to ask a lot of questions, get as much as you can in writing, and dont do anything until you get confirmation that you can do it and get reimbursed for it. If you book your flight or start moving before you get the proper authorizations you may not get reimbursed.

You start getting paid once youre commissioned and you get your service-specific orders, which will depend on how quickly youre able to get your commissioning paperwork through. Most USUHS students get their first paycheck during officer basic training in the summer.
