2019-2020 University of Tennessee

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just in case anyone is curious, I got my invitation at 11 pm last night. So, I take it that pretty much any time is fair game for getting one! I know that it always helps me to know when to look for something, so I hope that knowing this helps someone else too!!!
Out of curiosity, did they let you choose a date or did they give you one? And how far out was the notice?

Congratulations! The invitations have begun! Goodluck everyone! Hopefully some (or all) of us can be classmates.

Out of curiosity, anyone know if MD/PhD interviews are different? Or do you have to be admitted to the MD class then apply for the PhD?

You have to be admitted to the MD class and then apply for PhD. Also, only the PhD portion is funded.

Hey folks,

Starting to stress a little about having not received a secondary yet. Anyone know if they're still sending them out? I believe I'm a competitive applicant... I'm in-state, 3.67/3.60 cGPA/sGPA, 519 MCAT, WARS 77. Well-rounded enough application as well I think. I submitted and received confirmation at the end of August, but I haven't heard anything since. Anyone have any insight?

I've also been considering calling the admissions office to inquire about the status of my application. Anyone know if that is a good or bad idea?

It'll come. You just submitted a little late.

Don't call. As I've posted above, I got that verification email on 7/2 and received the secondary on 9/20.

Submitted and confirmation received for primary August 7. My last reference letter didn't get in until September. Got my secondary (finally) on Friday.

II! OOS but with IS links
At this point I'm not surprised you got an II here. Not to say you didn't work hard to get where you are. I'm guessing you're interviewing next week? Let us know how it goes!

I was supposed to but unfortunately have conflicting dates. Currently working to reschedule!

has anyone interviewed already and want to share how their experience was?
The admissions coordinator was super chill and welcoming. The two interviews were pretty relaxed as well. For the most part, they just glance through your application and ask informal questions. They like to ask a lot about your family.

Question for those applying: I submitted my primary in September but haven't heard anything back. I've been living/working in Memphis for about 2 months (OOS resident- came here with my girlfriend while she goes to professional school) and will be here for a full year by the time I matriculate. Unfortunately there's nothing in my primary about that so I just look like an OOS resident with no ties. Do you think it would be giving an update so that I (hopefully) don't get screened out? And if so, should I call or email? Thanks in advance!

I know Nelson Strother is very receptive and nice when it comes to applicants. However, it's due to state law that OOS can only be 10% of the class. And state law is the 8 neighboring states around TN OR a child of an alumnus/a.

They may be able to help you out. If they can, it'd be Nelson Strother.

I was under the impression that they changed their policy this year to accept applications from residents of any state.

I don’t think they changed anything. They’re still very much focused on TN residents. I suppose they accept OOS applications from bordering states, but of those OOS applicants, few are accepted to matriculate.

No, they did make this change this year - now open to all states. Dean Strother said as much when I spoke to him. However, it's still something like 10% OOS hard maximum, so basically a reasonable shot for gunners only.

Hmm. The main determinant pre-secondary for IS status is likely whichever state you indicated you are applying from in AMCAS. I think you can change this indication if you would prefer to apply as a Tennessee resident, but you absolutely can't double-dip IS status. If you really really want to go here for personal (SO) reasons etc, and you sent primary in September, there is probably still time to make an AMCAS edit for this school.

Living here 2 months might be worth an update/letter of interest if you don't want to do that, but idk if it'd be enough to count as 'strong ties' to TN.

Same:/ is the whole guaranteed interview with a secondary thing still a thing?
I also think it still is a guaranteed interview. But it's weird how they structure who they interview and when. I also know someone who submitted end of August and interviewed early (around end of October.) I also know a non-trad that submitted early June but didn't interview til February. Both got in without getting put on hold first.

Is the guaranteed Interview only for IS or is it for everyone?

From looking at the past threads for UTHSC, it's everyone who gets one; regardless of state residency. There have been a couple of people who have to wait til February or March for an II when they submitted back in September, but they tend to be high stat applicants who've already received multiple offers. Seemed to be a yield protection kinda thing more than anything.
