2019-2020 University of Tennessee

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
with the announcement of UT system schools remaining online and canceling other activities, any word how this will affect interview invites?

Okay so I take this to mean that II's are still going out and if I haven't heard yet don't lose hope?
I think so, on Friday they said they want to support students who have been scheduled to interview already “or will be scheduled to interview” so it seems there are still II going out! There may just be some delay so be patient and wait it out - they’re also having to reschedule next weeks interviews. This is a giant hiccup in everybody’s plans unfortunately, and I believe they’re taking their time to make sure we all still get a fair chance! Keep your chin up 🙂

Thanks for the reply! I just got an email that basically said “you will still get your interview, we will send more info when we figure this out.”

I appreciate the communication which is much better than some schools.

I got the email too but have not been scheduled for an interview. The subject line made it seem like an interview was coming, but do you guys think it was sent to everyone who applied and is still active? Just trying to gauge how hopeful to be

It sounds like we will definitely be interviewed so I think there is hope. The email I got said "You will receive a separate e-mail to let you know the date, time and with whom you are scheduled to interview; notifications will be e-mailed as quickly as possible," which I took to mean don't worry, we will schedule you, just don't know exactly when.

This is my interpretation as well. I found the email to be very reassuring that they still have a plan for us despite the whole world decending into chaos.

Just got the hold letter in the mail. I live in Memphis for reference.

Any idea how full the class is so far? Or any insight at all?
In the FB group, there are 98 people who’ve joined. That doesn’t mean they’ve chosen to go here nor does it account for all acceptances given. That’s as close as I can get to how many people may be accepted.

I received the survey email on Friday but nothing in the mail yet. Anyone else get the survey too?

Anybody else who had an interview cancelled due to coronavirus that hasn't heard back about reschedule date? It was cancelled on Monday last week and I have not received new date to plan for.

I received my II on 3/11 and have not received a rescheduling email but was told they were planning to figure out dates last week.
Are you local to Memphis?

Okay, I got my invite 3/2 and was told to wait for rescheduling so just seeing if I'd missed an email or if they seem to still be working on it!
I grew up in Memphis then moved for college, but residency is still there.

Hopefully we hear back soon!

I only ask if you're local because there have been more business and school closures (for colleges and grade schools) indefinitely or just until April 24th. I haven't seen any further Announcements from UTHSC, but I imagine they just have more going on now

Does anyone know if uthsc will accept P/F grades for a nonessential course (english, foreign language, etc)? Bc of all that is going on rn and online classes, my school is giving us the option to have a class be P/F.

They'll probably accept it given the circumstances but i'd just email dean strother and ask! he's very quick and thorough about answering emails

Memphis just had a shelter in place warning issued by the mayor that started on Tuesday, and UTHSC is still adjusting to everything I think. Tbh I think they were waiting for the governor to make a statement before the mayor finally took things into his own hands. I can't say exactly what's going on at the med school, but in my department we finally just closed down to essential staff as of yesterday. That's about what I know, as it's been a bit of a mess all over the University, but I would just say give it a little time. I don't envy being in any of their positions right now lol

I have a question for anyone who goes here/has interviewed here. What's the general consensus on the grading system here? Basically every other school I've interviewed at is P/F, and I'm fairly concerned about the traditional ABC style that's listed on the MSAR. Can anyone share their thoughts? Does it add unnecessary stress? Does it feel like students are competing rather than collaborating? I know it says there are student rankings too, and since I won't be meeting students since there's no in-person interview day anymore, I was hoping someone could answer some of this lol

From what I gathered (it was the first question people asked at my interview,) that it isn’t the greatest thing in the world for a traditional GPA system to be in place at medical school. However, none of the students found it to be ultra competitive amongst your peers. If everyone does well enough to get an A, then everyone gets an A. The school makes a shared drive for each class and people publish their study guides for tests when they make them. If you miss a lecture, then people are more than willing to share their notes from said lecture. I think the main point is class grades aren’t curved. They’re not trying to make you fail out

The school doesn’t publish rankings to the students, but it isn’t hard to figure out who is generally ranked high and who isn’t.

FWIW, I think with Step I becoming P/F, it may help us more with residency apps. That’s just me.

They probably had to get Zoom/WebEx set up for y’all and make sure that things are as smooth as possible for the interview format. PM me if y’all wanna know any info about the school or tips about interviews
I'd love some tips please!
