2019-2020 Virginia Tech

Here’s what I think. VTECH is very mission driven. They care about research research and more research. They look for OOS people who believe in their mission. The map IMO shows people are from all over. Yes there are a lot of east coasters but that’s because they’ve probably heard of the school and would be more willing to be in Virginia. If you’re OOS and really believe and can show you believe in the research mission then I think you are good.

Yeah I agree, thanks for the input! I was afraid someone knew about some regional preference that I was unaware of haha. I have 2 years of research experience and some poster presentations but not pubs (my lab was veeeeery slow with pubs as it was a psych lab and did a lot of longitudinal studies). I emphasized how much I value research/evidence-based medicine in my PS and how I want to make this a focal point of my career so I'm hoping I match the mission. Though it may be that the ~45 students accepted will all have MD/PhD caliber research experience haha idk.

@Faha said "Rutgers, Stony Brook, Virginia Tech accept few non residents with your MCAT scores and no connection to the state or region." so I was going off of that but obvi it could be d/t my MCAT score that he/she said that

Hmm, alright thanks for explaining! Well I've already applied anyways so I guess we'll find out lol. The fact that they don't state such a regional preference and that they matriculated students from Washington, CA, etc. gives me hope.

Here's another interesting question...I see that VTC was originally private and is still listed as private on MSAR, but joined Virginia Tech officially in July 2018...so is it now a public school and therefore will likely take more than 50% from IS?

Nope !! And IS still pay full tuition

I wish I didn’t feel so inadequate when looking through these threads sometimes! I just want a single II ):
Hey I have said this other places and may have even said this year. But I am a re-applicant. My cycle literally ended 10 days ago. I received invites in August, September, October and December. ITS SUCH a long cycle my dude/dudet. Its going to be okay 🙂 they will come. Just believe in yourself!!

II just now! Date in September, but I couldn't attend it so I had to move it to October.
Congrats on the interview for VTC SOM!! I also received an II from this school but I cannot attend due to having an interview the day before in an another state. You mentioned that you were able to move your interview date to October. Did you provide a reason to the school when moving your interview date? And which dates were offered in October? Thanks!!

II today! Super excited! Great fit to my career interest!

Lol mind if I ask you both the same questions? IS/OOS, LizzyM, and date secondary was submitted?

I'm mostly curious if they interview mostly high stat applicants first.

Also out of curiosity, do y'all have publications? I have research experience but no pubs and I'm super curious as to how much they value publications being so research heavy. (sorry for being so nosey, just ignore if you don't want to share lol)

I have to miss for another interview too! I just said I can’t make the date they gave me and if I could switch to another day! The lady was super nice about it and did it ok problem. I was offered Oct 5th and took it.

Can someone help define what a thought leader is to me? I am looking it up, and I have a general idea... But I am still not sure.

I saw this one but I had a hard time interpreting it. Is the definition basically one that is "skills of research, inquiry, and discovery"?
That’s the point 🙂 — they want you to interpret it.

UVA and Wake Forest are ~2 hours. (Alternatively, VCOM is <45 min away) If you're coming from far away/flying in, I'd consider that ITA. But you're right, VTech is pretty secluded.

I just meant it in the sense that I understand why they wouldn’t be. It makes sense if you’re an NYC school, Philly school and dc school and even they aren’t too receptive. You are definitely right though ! More understanding them than disagreeing with you.

ohhhh I hear what you're saying. That makes total sense

Does anyone have any insight into how to classify updates re. publications?

I was notified that a pub I'm a co-author on was accepted for publication and will soon receive a PMID and whatnot. When submitting this update to VTech over the portal, should I classify it as an "Activities Update" or "Other/Mis."?

Why don't you call and ask they are very nice in the admissions office. In reality, my guess is those labels are pretty irrelevant and all the updates go to the same place. But they will have the best answer for you.

Ha, I figured I was being too neurotic about it. I'll go ahead and do that. Thanks!
