This is awesome! Got data for December?

Venerable old father of a BCM grad (2016) here. She is now about to move on from her Ortho residency to a Hip and Knee Fellowship at Mayo. She LOVES Ortho! Don't let anyone suggest that Ortho might require a guy's strength...it never really matters.

Oh, she had tested in the 94th percentile on the Steps-- good enough for ANY specialty. BCM gets you ready for the Steps and residency-- better than most. BCM often has the leading average (or at least in the top handful) on the Steps among all medical schools (150 or so). Seems like BCM pioneered the 18-month only preclinical classroom idea...and it has surely worked.

Ortho won out for our daughter over ENT (too many ear tubes and tonsillectomies in everyday practice), Plastics (too much uninsured vanity stuff...can limit where you might live), Derm (too monotonous...lacking the challenge of surgery), and Ophthal (too "focused" on one body part). Please consider these opinions as just that...YMMV. 🙂

In Ortho, she likes that you can fix a problem for a patient and improve her/his quality of life. It is still the most male dominated specialty (maybe 10%+ females), but that is inexorably changing as with many other specialties.

Every year (I have visited here on occasion since 2011), BCM candidates freak out over when they interview and fret endlessly about getting that acceptance notice. They try to imagine every little sign or non-sign. That is totally understandable.

Try to hang in there. BCM is indubitably painfully methodical about filling its class. But they like how the results look over time...and you will also.
I say again-- BCM is the best medical school value (bang for the buck results) in America.

Our daughter (OOS) interviewed on the very last interview day (she had been complete late)-- she got accepted from the WL in early May, AND was offered a 50% merit scholarship.

When you arrive for classes, nobody knows whether you were accepted back in October, or in June.

Remember when that date arrives where you MUST absolutely choose a school, BCM also gets some give-back acceptances (perhaps their home state schools offer a late scholarship?) and WL spots become available. Some number of OOS acceptees especially actually opt to go elsewhere (such as Washington U., Hopkins, etc.) and ultimately give back their acceptances. Seems like I recall that > half of OOS acceptees opt finally to go elsewhere, which makes sense when you think about it. IOW, the 25 who enroll are less than half of those OOS accepted.

Oh, just above someone was talking about living near the campus. I have a separate post about that which might be helpful that I will try to resurrect. Someone I know will have a nice, 2BR/2BA, 1-story condo for sale as the school year changes (late spring)-- let me know if you might need one. Many residence options are on the bus line-- just $1.20 a day for students. Parking around the TMC/BCM is out of the question.

The University area is not always totally safe, but hey, it is a major city-- you gotta' watch your back. It need not be a daunting concern.

Keep the faith, folks-- BCM IS worth the wait! 🙂

Thanks for this. It's definitely hard to wait, but great to hear a later success story. Patience is key! (All puns intended)

Did they say that on their website?

Historically, Baylor's interview cycle is the longest of any TX medical school since they aren't constricted by TMDSAS match day. They typically have an interview day or two after TMDSAS Match Day and haven't filled up interview days that far out yet to where we can expect more IIs to come.

Hello! My name is Collin English and I’m the current MS1 Class President at Baylor. Regardless of where you are in this process, I wanted to congratulate you on making it this far and committing yourself to the most fulfilling profession.

Before I say anything else, I remember being in your shoes and I remember how degrading it felt. This process is long and oftentimes feels more like a judgement of your worth as a human than your credentials as a candidate. You all have worked so hard, you are immensely valued, and you will make it through this. Please if any of you need help or support, reach out to family, friends, and even me. We all want you to succeed and will do whatever we can to help.

Now, I wanted to also congratulate you on applying to the best med school in the country. It is hard to convey over zoom, but we here at Baylor are a tight knit community that will support you from the moment you step onto campus. For those of you that have received acceptances, I am including a link for you to join your Facebook group. Please only join this Facebook group if you have been accepted. If any of you, regardless of application status, need advice or support, please reach out to me. I am more than happy to give you my number or schedule a zoom call to talk. Wishing all of you the best, you are all gonna be amazing doctors and go change lives.

II! I absolutely CANNOT BELIEVE I got an interview here, but I'm delighted! One of those things, like an Academy Award, where I will say, "Just an honor to be nominated. " LizzyM 73, complete end of September. I wasn't offered a choice of dates, but was assigned January 15th. Unfortunately, I already have an interview that day, so I'm hoping they can reschedule.

Does anyone know if Baylor sends pre-II R's? I've been complete since late August .

They don’t. In early summer they send a general email saying “our class is complete” to all who have not been admitted.

Update! When I requested, they rescheduled my interview for the 29th. Phew! I was so scared I'd lose it.

IS

Hi everyone, congrats to those who just got IIs! I'm new to the forum and would like to share my (delayed) thoughts on my interview at Baylor.

My Application Details
AMCAS complete 5/28, letters 7/14
2° complete 7/16, II 9/1, IA 10/2
ORM, IS

Logistics
My interview was on a Friday. The Thursday night before, there's a one-hour social that I unfortunately didn't get to attend. On the Friday itself, the program began for me at 12:00 pm CT with a 30 minute introduction, followed by 3 hours for scheduled interviews, closing remarks and a student Q&A panel from 3:45 to 4:45, and then an optional virtual Google Maps tour of Houston and Baylor (which I thought was cute but I didn't stay for). I did really appreciate that the entire interview day lasted only an afternoon, with really only 90 minutes of programmed activity apart from the interview. Clearly, Baylor doesn't see a need to flood us with presentation after presentation unlike many other schools...

Interview
I got a single 25 to 30 minute interview with a physician. The semantics in the announcement email made it sound like everyone gets interviewed by a faculty member (no medical students). Everyone does only get one interview though. This 30 minute interview was anytime between 12:30 and 3:30 pm CT. The interview is what you'd consider traditional - a bunch of behavioral and situational questions, not really the conversational type.

Impressions
1. Baylor is obviously a very prestigious school. Though not in the T10, it's a solid T20 with a strong network of medical institutions in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, TX, that makes research and specializations incredibly easy (there's McGovern, Houston Methodist, Texas Heart Institute, MD Anderson...). Also arguably the best school with TX (UTSW is in very close competition).
2. Generally, I didn't sense that Baylor students had something particularly special to say or express about the school. While I was able to gather some impressions of the overall mood from students at other schools (e.g. UTMB Galveston students were pretty laidback, UTSA students and community were passionate about community service), I didn't gather anything special about Baylor. Baylor students seemed contented with where they were, though not necessarily super excited about a particular thing about the school. Though take this with a grain of salt - I had some personal issues going on around my interview day.

Overall
Baylor remains my top-ranked TX school for me, though UTSW comes in at a close second. My impression is that BCM will provide a solid, traditional medical education, with plenty of opportunities for research. Sure, Baylor may not add a "unique flavor" to medical school, but is that really as important as attending an institution as reputable as Baylor?

Advice
Send thank-you notes to the interviewer. Use Google to look up their email address.

Hope this helps! Waiting in anticipation of an A as much as the rest of you are 😊

Can y'all who've gotten the call share the last 4 digits of the phone number that called? I missed two calls today and I'm worried I might've missed THE call 😳😱
