2020-2021 Drexel

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
does anyone know how Drexel's current rotation situation affects residency placement?

Truths haha and no beef anywhere/with anyone, I’m just a naive premed who is slowly becoming more addicted to coffee. xD

Also I didn’t actually know who he was, so thank you for the history lesson! 🙂
No worries, I read your post as you joking/venting, so I responded with a joke too lol

You'll have to judge for yourself based on c/o 2020's match list (which is on the website) and the upcoming c/o 2021's match list.

Anyone who isn't a PD and tries to answer this question is just making guesses.

I'm debating whether to send an update letter before the next decision release on 12/18, or wait until I actually have a decision before I send it (ie. just in case I get deferred or waitlisted). I actually discussed most of my updates already with my interviewer but I thought maybe it'd be a good way to re-express my interest since it's kinda been a while. Can I please get somebody's opinion on this?

@Earthworm Slim had this same predicament a few weeks ago...

i interviewed on 10/13, and i was debating whether to send an application update letter in prior to the 11/20 decision release date -- i ended up holding off.

FWIW, i was actually deferred on 11/23 and i'm sort of happy i didn't send an application update letter in b/c i read that you're only allowed n=1? anyways, at least now I have a chance to update the committee on meaningful stuff to hopefully change this deferral into an acceptance.

would it be better to send an update letter after interview pre decision? or wait until after?
i think that is kind of a personal decision? my logic was giving myself a potential lifeline in case i wasn't outright accepted (which i wasn't), and so now i have an opportunity to show interest/update application...

but each to their own! good luck!

I had my interview today.
First there was an hour long information session, followed by a 30 minute faculty interview. I believe I had the same surgeon as some previous commenters. He was pretty rough. The interview was not conversational at all; he pretty much asked me questions and I answered with no follow up conversation from him. Mostly typical interview questions too, nothing super interesting-- why Drexel, why medicine, what was the most difficult time of your life and what did you learn, what are the biggest problems facing healthcare today.
This was followed by a thirty minute curriculum Q&A with a faculty member.
Next there was a group interview with a student. Myself and two other applicants were placed in a break out room with the student. This interview was a lot more conversational. The student asked questions and we took turns answering him. I was unaware the student interview would be a group interview and was kind of thrown off guard, but everyone was very nice. The student asked why medicine, why Drexel, how will you manage stress in medical school, why Philadelphia, and what are hobbies were. It was pretty chill.
That concluded the interview day. Based on what they told us about the admissions process, an adcom member will review our file and interviews and write a summary review which is presented to the adcom which meets once a week. Decisions come out on a monthly basis. Drexel doesn't utilize holds so their deferrals function more like a hold than a soft R. Deferred applicants are always reconsidered for the next decision date. They also told us to reach out if we haven't heard back by 6 weeks, and that update letters are pretty important to send, especially if you haven't heard back by 6 weeks.
best of luck to everyone who interviewed today (if y'all are here!!) and to those with upcoming interview dates. y'all got this!

Got put on hold today 🙃 Complete 11/11, LM 74
Someone earlier in the thread suggested sending an update. We'll see I guess.
Congrats to everyone hearing back positive news, good luck to those still waiting! 🌿<3

Edit: I emailed asking if it were likely to receive an interview post-hold, and this was the response I received: "Yes, applicants on hold will still be considered for a possible interview. Applicants on hold will be reviewed again, so if you have not done so already, feel free to send in an update!"

Are both the faculty and student interviews 30 minutes each? The way the timeslots are described in the portal I thought it was going to be for an hour and a half. Just wanted to be sure

This could be a silly question, but Drexel will have 3 different campuses, Will all students move around these 3 sites or do you choose from the get-go which campus you will be on for all 4 years? I honestly have forgotten whether there was a selection option in the secondary since it's been a while

By 3 campuses do you mean Queen Lane, Reading, and Center City?

Because I think when CC opens, QL will close. So it’ll be 2 at any given time.

According to the above old press release they’re moving to University City and fully vacating where they currently are in Queen Lane. This will happen in 2023 so it doesn’t directly effect us as we’ll be doing rotations by then... right?

Correct! Unless it happens January-May 2023, which in that case, we’ll be finishing preclinical years

so are you at either place for 4 years or will you have to go between Center City and Reading over the course of your 4 years?

The new campus would be in university city, not center city where the nursing school/hahnemann currently are.

If you’re at Reading you’ll be there all four years from my understanding.

As of right now, there is only one campus. Reading won’t be open until the fall.

Are interviews open or closed file? I tried to do my due diligence and scan through the last few pages of this thread but couldn't find the answer, sorry if I might've missed it though!
Faculty interview is open file. Very conversational. I had one ethics question.

Student interview is closed file. Pretty much just a meet-and-greet with a MS1.

This but for late October?? Was hoping to hear in November but it looks like they didn't get to most of us
I would think the late October ones will be released in December. It looks like they got all the way to 10/20 on their last batch of decisions, so fingers crossed!

DUCOM first-year here. Feel free to ask me any questions! Please give me some distraction from lectures....

What's something you don't like about DUCOM? Everyone on interview day kept constantly hyping up the school (which is a good sign I'm guessing lol), but what's something that could be improved?

I haven’t had this issue yet, but the amount of rotation sites in Philly that is available. I didn’t really think about it going in, but I will probably want to be married before graduating and that makes it much harder on my fiancé/spouse. If I wasn’t attached, I would probably care less but I would still want to live in the same city as my friends. I do have to say though, the people interviewing you are first and second years and I truly have no issues with anything else about the school. Might be why they hype it up!

DUCOM first-year here. Feel free to ask me any questions! Please give me some distraction from lectures....
Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions!
1) How do you like the curriculum for DUCOM (Foundations and Frontiers). Similarly, what is your opinion on HAP (presuming it's still happening regardless of COVID?)
2) What do you think are the benefits/drawbacks of attending DUCOM? Similarly, what factors led you to choose DUCOM?
3) Any advice for us as applicants?

@Just_Daikon

Q1) I really, really like the curriculum. I can’t even imagine how other people do med school without doing the flipped classroom. I feel like there is minimum wasted time this way. I will say that I’m usually a day or two behind so some of the group sessions go over my head and other people usually “carry” but if you’re prepped they’re very useful. I love my HAP. We were given a list of about 50 things to list as our top choices and you could choose in-person, online, or hybrid. I know some of my friends are neutral about it, but I feel like it’s because they didn’t find a service project that really resonated with them. It’s also not a lot of time during the week and is a much-needed break from the med school bubble.

Q2) benefits of DUCOM (sorry if formatting is awful I’m on mobile!)

(A) It’s a perfect area for me. It’s close to the city but I don’t have to live in it and deal with all those people.

(B) The faculty. I genuinely love all of the faculty. If I’ve ever struggled with a subject, they’ve reached out to me, helped me for hours at a time, and made sure I had the resources to succeed. Similarly, they’ve made every single possible effort to make all of the craziness of 2020 not affect our schoolwork. They’ve cancelled extraneous tests, moved around things, and added small treats when representatives of our class reach out to them to say we’re overwhelmed. Honestly, their response to our requests has been really refreshing and surprising.

(C) I’m not sure if this is at other med schools (probably), but I’ve met a lot of students who get the real world. They’ve failed, pushed through it, maybe been sidetracked, but they made it here. I haven’t met one person who’s doing this without some sort of passion. I really like the students here.

Cons——

(A) There isn’t as much research here as other schools. There’s definitely a lot of places in the area to do it, but I would have liked the sweet, sweet 10 minute drive to campus for research. There are positions, just not many.

(B) Cost. Because I’m paying with loans, I am seeing how the price of Drexel vs a state school is influencing how I’m looking at residency, my next ten years, and where I’ll be. It’s expensive, yo.

(C) Rotation sites. I mentioned that above.

Q3) Advice! Choose a pass/fail school. Get a roommate unless you hate people (you’ll need the support). Only schools that see you fitting them pretty perfectly will choose you, so don’t waste your money applying to bad fits. Practice a MMI before going to interviews so you don’t have a horrible experience like me! Learn Spanish. Find some way to make every day memorable (I do one second of video clip a day). It goes by so, so fast.

complete since 8/19 and still no communication does this seem like a silent R?

take this with a grain of salt because I'm not an adcom but I was complete 8/20 I think and did not hear anything for weeks then got an II in the last batch. I was never put on hold and I did not send any updates or other communication. silence COULD be a good thing but again, no way to know for sure. don't count yourself out yet. 🙂

thank youuuuuu sm and congrats on the II!!!

For anyone who's interviewed here, the student interviewer recommended to thank them through another email so that adcoms could see it? What email does anyone think they were talking about since she didn't elaborate.
