2020-2021 Illinois

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those accepted, Is the commit to enroll button binding? Should I click that now or wait until I know 100% I will attend. I accepted the offer and ranked my campus preferences but want to make sure there’s nothing else I need to do.
You can always cancel your acceptance before the April deadline for committing to enroll.

Did anyone get the chance to ask admissions any of the following:

1) How is the MMI graded?
2) Do the faculty and MMI interviews carry the same weight?
3) Is the post-interview decision based solely on the interview or on a re-review of the entire file?

Thanks!

does anyone know if we will know placements anytime soon? and is anyone planning on visiting the campus in feb/march before making a decision?
I think this is contingent on people who have received offers to accept on the portal and note their site preference. They said this could take a while

Question about update letters. I've heard conflicting advice over whether to direct these to a specific admissions director, or the general admissions committee. One article I saw said it's kind of impertinent to suppose that the actual director/dean of admissions will read the letter, when it's likely it might be read by other members of the committee. Do you think it's alright if I address each of my update letters to "XYZ School Admissions Committee" ?

Yes, I would say addressing them to the admissions committee would be best.

I'm in state IL as well and when I look at Cost of attendance for both schools I see MCW is actually cheaper due to lower cost of living in Milwaukee. The difference is ~15K over the four years. I think one thing to mention is that UIC has 3 summer semesters that you have to pay for in addition to the Spring/Fall semesters that they don't often make explicit on their website.
Would we still have to pay for the summer semesters if we are not taking summer classes? If so, can you please elaborate on why this is the case? Thank you.

Summer semesters are mandatory from my understanding (Its just a continuation of the curriculum). Below is the best breakdown I could find. Its probably best to look at the roll up "total cost of attendance" when comparing different schools. I think the reason they show summer separated from spring/fall in the table is because M4 year doesn't have a summer semester and it would create confusion as to why M1-M3 years are considerably more expensive than M4.

Am I ever going to get off the delayed decision? It's been 2 months already lol

Yeah... it's pretty wild. I'm applying for the HPSP, but I'm not certain that I want to go through with it yet.
Unless you have a passion to serve in the military i would highly advise against it. Depending on your specialty you can pay off your student loans in 4-5 years if you don't live lavishly. I've seen people play it in 2-3 if they get high paying gigs post residency. If you do have that inkling to serve than do it man, more power to you and you're in it for the right reasons. Everyone I've heard from in it says, never never never do it for the money. Its just not worth it.

Has anyone applied MSTP heard back anything? Anyone else deferred decision in November and radio silence since then?

Has anyone who has been admitted received a scholarship offer? According to UICOM's website, certain scholarships are awarded at the time of admission!

Is there anyone on this thread that interviewed in October and got placed on delayed decision, still on delayed decision?

Hey question for any current students. What is the parking situation at the campus? I know parking is a nightmare in Chicago in general but I had assumed that the campus itself would have parking garages or lots for students. Is this not the case and will public transportation (aka metra into city then buses) be a better option?

Not a current student, but worked at the UICOM and attended for undergrad. There’s a garage super close to med campus that’s about 5 dollars for 2 hours if you’re in a bind and there’s free parking scattered down Harrison street. I don’t suggest driving, though. Public transit runs through the medical campus so frequently and students pay for the UPass. If you’re commuting from outside of public transit you can pay for a parking pass.

in my interview they mentioned that OOS tuition is dropping by 16% starting next year!

That reduction has already taken place I think. The article you linked said that the reduction started with the 20-21 school year, which is the current school year. So for a more realistic understanding of the COA for out-of-state students, people can look at this estimation, which was also provided at the interview!
