If any current students are lurking can they talk about culture, grading during all 4 years, AOA, and residency matching?
Current M2 on winter break. Just made this account for ultimate anonymity. I will say that the curriculum changes year-to-year quite a bit based on student feedback, so take everything I say with a grain of salt. Current M1s would likely be a better source of guidance, as they are in the Step 1 P/F state of mind whereas M2s are still taking a scored Step 1, which may change our experience.

Overall, culture is fine. It isn't competitive at all considering years 1 and 2 are true P/F. You just need to pass the blocks, which the overwhelming majority of the class does. Part of your grade comes from professionalism and weekly quizzes, but the lion's share of the grading comes from the block exam, which is quite doable, especially considering we are given 1 entire free week to prep for it. Students are friendly with each other, though COVID has limited our interactions a bit. Many students are roommates and live together. We still have Zoom class, about 2-3 mandatory sessions per week with another 3-4 non-mandatory sessions. Then there are also 3-4 independent learning sessions that don't have lectures and you are expected to learn on your own. Overall, the workload is very manageable if you are self-motivated. It helps to use Anki since the material moves so quick week-to-week. Rarely does material from one week rely on prior weeks' material.

Grading starts years 3-4 on a H/HP/P/F system, which is similar to most schools that still have graded clinical rotations. Part of your grade comes from the shelf exam and the other part comes from written evals. Like I said, I don't know too much since I'm still an M2.

I don't know much about AOA since if you pass all your blocks years 1-2, you are on the same standing as everyone else. You don't get a better rank if you do better on those exams. The true difference maker will be clinical rotation grades and Step 1 scores. Will be different for y'all, obviously.

As for residency matching, I think the school matches pretty well, at least for Chicago. The match list is online. You can see that a good chunk of people are matching very competitive residencies, with the rest being pretty strongly middle-of-the-road. I think the Chicago campus, which has about 180 people, matched something like 10 people to ortho last year, which is insane. But feel free to peruse that list over the past few years to get an idea of what people get into.

I can answer some more questions later since I'll be lying around before our class starts prepping for the boards in the spring.

For anyone applying to a Scholarly Concentration, do you know if the committee that decides will have access to your full application or just your Scholarly Concentration essays?

are you oos btw? cost is the biggest diff for me🤧
No, I was in-state. Like someone mentioned, they did drop OOS tuition, but I don't know the impact since the cost before was already astronomical. I think some OOS students get a "scholarship", which essentially changes OOS to IS tuition. Even for IS, total COA is ~$300k, which is absurd. I didn't really have any other choice, though. Looks like OOS total COA is >$400k. I'd strongly consider other schools if you can find a significant cost-savings elsewhere. I know some people have no choice, though.

How is financial aid? I've looked at the threads from the past couple of years, and it doesn't look great

Financial aid in terms of what? Scholarships? It's esentially non-existent. Most people I know are on loans or have help from their parents. Like I said above if you're OOS you might get the IS tuition deal, but I don't know how many there are of those. Don't hold out for a scholarship.

Yeah sorry I meant scholarships. Bummer but thanks for following up

Can someone please help put the OOS tuition/COA in perspective? As someone who makes just a tad bit over minimum wage, I see the COA as an incredible barrier to entry. Would it be reasonably doable to pay off a 400K+ debt after residency, or would I just be setting myself up for a lifetime of financial struggles? I understand that medical school is a financial investment, but am trying to be more informed to decide where to draw the line with cost. Thank you.

If you have an acceptance to another medical school (which will more than likely be less expensive), I would go that route. However, if it is your only option, then I would take it. You could try applying for scholarships or go the military route so they could pay for your tuition. But only do this if you want to serve your country and understand what is required of you.

I agree with you though, the OOS COA is insane at this school and imo, not justified if you have other options.

Im IS, however, I would recommend looking into the possibility of establishing residency in IL if you really want to come here. Perhaps you could pay OOS tuition M1 and IS tuition M2-M4. Ask the school if this is something that students do/have done.

I looked into that, Illinois requires living in-state for one year before you can establish residency, but that year cannot be spent in school

You can always marry someone who has an Illinois residency before starting school. Lol

So sorry if this has been asked before, but is the admissions committee responsive to update letters? Some schools don't care about updates so just wondering

I think it doesn't hurt! I received delayed decision in November after my 10/22 interview, sent an update/LOI in early December, and was accepted 12/18. I like to think my letter helped but who knows.

Congrats on your acceptance!! I'll go ahead and send a letter then. Just wanted to make sure it would be worth my time because writing letters of interest for a whole bunch of schools takes forever

I remember Dr. Amiri said in the interview day that letter of interest of you get a delayed decision is helpful, as in helps them know you are still interested so I think it does help quite a bit.

Delayed decision back in October. Sent an update letter in November and still silent.

Is it likely that they will send out any more IIs to in-state applicants? I feel like there are a lot of in-state apps that have stats well above the medians and are sitting in silence. Does UIC interview late or is this cycle just really that competitive 🙁
I’m also wondering the same!

To people who have already interviewed, how many people were in your interview day groups? was it like 15?

Awesome! Did you get an email or was it just updated on your portal? Also, did you apply for a scholarly concentration?
No email, I was surprised! I just happened to check (out of habit) and it was up. I did apply to UMED

Congrats! Hopefully people who didn’t apply to scholarly concentrations will get updates soon then as well. I have nothing in my portal yet but I didn’t apply to a concentration.

No update on my portal either. Perhaps they are updating 1 by 1...?

Placed in Chicago! Not surprised given my status and what I was told by the students on pre-II dinner. Though the early clinical exposure and getting to do first assist in Preoria is definitely tempting.

Edit: Did not apply to any scholarly concentration.

Out of curiosity what do you mean by "status"?

Oh like whether I'm considered IS or OOS for UIC. So the med student during our pre-II dinner said that OOS and Internationals are more likely to be placed in Chicago/have Chicago as their 1st choice than people with IL residency. Granted, the buildings at the other campuses are much better and the fact that there are not a lot of residents mean you get to do tons of stuffs like delivering babies (someone at Preoria was delivering 100 babies or sth in her M3, which is insane) and first to assist in surgery.

How are you guys ordering transcripts? Student Clearing House doesn’t exactly allow me to choose to send transcripts to UIC’s med email or the physical address they gave

Mind sharing which campus you interviewed at? Thanks for the info!

Sure, I interviewed at Chicago, but that's because when I was choosing the dates, there were only 2 dates available with Chicago campus, and 1 with Peoria. THe Peoria campus date was like 5 days from when I got the II invite, meaning that it is way too early and I can't prep and that I will not have time to receive the VITA invite and finish it. It doesn't really matter because which campus you interviewed at has no bearing on your site assignment. Though, the campus you interviewed at will definitely hope to convince you to rank them 1st. All campuses will be available on interview day.

Hey guys, still no II this cycle, I did apply late but was wondering if there's any hope for DO/ MD schools or if I should just start prepping for next year.

There is definitely still hope since I just got an II today for a midwest DO school. I would say those aren't mutually exclusive though because if you are worried, preparing could never hurt.

Thanks!! I'm still waiting on the midwest DO schools. Congrats on your II and best of luck!

Cool, thanks for the reply, here’s to hoping I get my site assignment soon as well

It shows up in the site assignment area right? Mine is still blank 🙁
