2021-2022 Hackensack Meridian

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They explicitly said that if you do the three year program offering it was guaranteed in the presentation. However not all specialties fall under that category, especially the more competitive ones.

So only the ones listed are guaranteed. I don’t think gen surg was one of them but I could be wrong.
Thank you. How do you actually do the program though? Do you have to apply in advance before starting school?

idk yet. I have a couple more A's, but I am contemplating my priorities in life, and I think that a 3-year program with a guaranteed match into anesthesiology or gen surg (per the spreadsheets, Hackensack seems like a neat place to do residency) is the choice to make.
That's exactly what I think. I don't know if you went to the tour, but the facilities are amazing also. Pretty much a brand new school. To be affiliated with Hackensack is also a great advantage when going for residency/fellowship.

Taken from the slides:

Timeline: Apply at end of 2nd year, interviews at beginning of 3rd year, P3-R acceptance October of 3rd year. Take Step 1 before January. NRMP match participation.

Go back and check your admissions packet email after the interview day. It should have the answers to your questions there.

Do any current students know what percentage of the class wanted to do a residency but didn’t get matched 3rd year? How are these students doing interview wise outside of the system. Lastly do people know whether Hackensack University Medical Center residents are able to get fellowships
The last class had about 40 apply for the 3 year program and only 2 did not match in a Hackensack residency

Does anyone know when they stop sending IIs and if they've done pre-II Rs? Completed 8/7 and received a first-phase complete email on 11/15 but nothing since.

First phase complete was mid October for me and silence.
I think they probably send out rejections once the cycle is over

Why does this school take so long to respond to emails? You would think the least they could do is respond in a timely manner. Sent an email over a week ago and no response. It’s not as if they’re doing it for free. We literally pay them to look at our applications. So frustrating.

I sent email in December and then again end of January. No response

do you know what the area code was and was it from the Dean of Admissions? I got a call from hackensack today but I couldn't pick up due to work. They left a voice mail saying they'll call back in a week or two but they didn't say what the call was about...
@sc2kaugnt did you ever get a call back? I got a similar call that I missed but haven’t heard back from them

when did you get first phase email?
the only other email i got was that my app had begun prelim review on 9/17, never got first phase review!
my current email says "The initial review of your application is complete and will remain in this status as we continue to evaluate candidates. Throughout our review process your application will be evaluated for possible advancement. If additional information is needed, we will reach out via email."

that sounds like a complete app email and not a hold.
I got prelim in sept and then first phase in oct and then nothing.

not rly sure tbh! from an earlier poster:

Complete email:
“We have completed the preliminary review of your application and you meet our admissions requirements. Your file is now being holistically reviewed to determine if you will be selected for an interview. You will remain in this status until you are selected for an interview or the admissions cycle closes.”

Hold email:
"Thank you for your interest in Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine. The initial review of your application is complete and will remain in this status as we continue to evaluate candidates. Throughout our review process your application will be evaluated for possible advancement. If additional information is needed we will reach out via email." (which is what I got)

Does anyone have a timeline when As are given out? I feel that not that many As have been given out and I'm waiting here 4.5 months post interview and haven't heard anything.

Does anyone know if they send interviews in march? I got a first round app complete in october and radio silence since smh (i'm an instate app)
exact same situation for me :/
IDK but if one of you call admissions to ask them if you could ask when acceptances are coming out and report back here I will love you like I love all you can eat Korean BBQ.

Do they not have phone service where you live?

The simple fact is that having that information will not really help you at all. As you can see from the thread, people have been receiving all sorts of results, As, WLs and even Rs, at various times, with absolutely no pattern. They seem to be somewhat disorganized, as well as less than totally responsive to inquiries.

Bottom line -- only the adcom knows why they are holding your app post-II, and no general response regarding the timeline to make and disseminate decisions is going to get you what you really want, which is an A.

As you know, most people receive a decision within 4.5 months of interviewing. While the delay is probably not great news on its face, it's not necessarily bad news, since at least one person has reported a post-II R, which means there was probably a lot more than one, and you have not received one. Only patience and allowing them to do their thing will get you what you seek. Good luck with that phone call! 😎

Has anyone who interviewed around late December heard back yet? I interviewed December 29th, and I’m losing my mind. Only school left which hasn’t waitlisted me post interview and am just losing it waiting. How do u guys deal with the wait? Do u just plan on assuming you don’t have an acceptance till u get one?

Man this feeling is indescribable, am I right?

As someone who was put on four waitlists last year and had to end up reapplying and got the A here this cycle, the wait is 100% the worst part lol, but no matter what happens, know that if a school offered you an II, you have what it takes to be in medical school
Don’t lose hope yet, the cycle is still going! However, last year during the waiting period I found that working on my app for the next cycle and having a backup plan for the year helped me feel a lot less anxious overall, hope that helps and best of luck!! You’ve got this 🙂

Thanks for your response and advice; honestly made me feel better.

Does anybody know if they still give merit scholarships to people who have been accepted at other schools? I read on the vs. sub forum that a bunch of people got full tuition.

I second this question and wonder if anyone knows the timing ?

No one is going to be able to answer this unless and until they start to dribble out, and no one has reported anything yet. It definitely happened in years past. Whether they have the funding, desire and perceived need to continue to do it as the class size grows and the school becomes more established remains to be seen.

What I noticed from those posts is that the full rides were given once the applicant said they were going somewhere else. Hackensack would respond saying we will give you money. You can try to get that money by giving up your seat but it’s risky if you are doing it for the money and still want to go to Hackensack regardless of if you get money or not.

Well if I have to reapply I’m not applying to this school again. Imagine not responding to an email at all. Smfh. Goes to show you that all these schools are about is money.

The most recent email I sent took about two weeks to get a response. N=1

I should’ve but it’s too late now. I doubt an update this late would do anything.
It’s worth a shot. Maybe they received your update and just didn’t let you know. When I spoke to them they let me know they are interviewing into April so you could still get an interview if that’s what you are looking for

Yes and no. It's not about the money. It's about selecting the best class possible, and then getting the people they want to enroll. They really don't care about anyone else.

It's a sellers' market, with WAAAAYYYY more candidates than available spots, so, they really can get away with just about anything. Some schools care about everyone having a good experience, staff their offices adequately, and train their people to be polite, respectful and responsive to EVERYONE. Others don't. It is what it is.

People complain about it all the time, on multiple threads. Nothing changes. Hackensack honestly doesn't care whether or not you, or anyone else, reapplies, and not a single person reading this in the future is going to deny themselves an opportunity to maybe be admitted because the staff treated you, or anyone else, like crap during the 2021-22 cycle.

Some schools are notorious for having horrific admissions offices while others have reputations for being great to deal with. Hackensack is new, and its reputation is being formed right now, but, whichever way it goes, people will apply based on location, MSAR, 3 year program, whatever. The responsiveness of the admissions staff is not a criterion in choosing where to apply for anyone, anywhere. If it was, things would be different. They are not.

Guys I have a question about the 3yr MD. If I choose to do the 3yr path, am I obligated to go to their residency options or can I still apply through the regular match??
