Hi fellas, I was just wondering if anyone knows how the quality of life is at HMSOM. I turned down my A to attend a DO school because I was concerned about my personal happiness. I believe I made the right choice, but I am curious to see how students are doing there. Some of my friends in other schools hate their lives rn and I think having virtually no time off and mandatory attendance would have the same result.

If its a "top" DO school its not an egregious decision.

My advice would be to stick to your decisions. If I replied that life at HMSOM was great, would that make you feel worse about going DO?

I never said it was, I'm just curious because this a school I'm considering and am looking for any useful info that can help me with my decision

It’s an egregious decision unless you’re just trying to do primary care, then nbd.

I couldn't find the PTE or CTE dates (I thought they list them in the MSAR timeline??) but I would think WL movement starts after the PTE deadline since that's when you're supposed to narrow down to one acceptance (but can stay on other WLs)
 
i'm a NJ resident and this is the only NJ school I didn't apply to. Did I miss out?

Yeah it’s a new school so the ranking will reflect that. But it definitely has immense upside, at least a better upside then Cooper. An MS4 told me that one individual was able to find about their residency spot early and it was a Urology position at Mt. Sinai. So definitely a solid school, at least for NYC!

😩😩😩 i should've applied. Though I got waitlisted at Cooper and NJMS, so I probably wouldn't have gotten in here either.

Dude, none of this makes sense hahaha. I didn’t even get a secondary from Cooper, yet I got into several schools with far better reputations, including a T20. No response from NJMS or Hackensack since secondary. A at RWJ. No rhyme or reason, which was to be expected, but not so much as a secondary from a school like Cooper!? I’m hurt lmao

Yeah it makes no sense. I did get Cooper and NJMS pretty early but got put on the WL. And I didn't get the RWJ II until very recently when I basically sent a desperate LOI for it. Not as crazy as you, have no As let alone a T20 A but I did get a few well ranked IIs. NJ schools be making no sense

Yeah I mean that is definitely not typical.

I would say HMH is pretty even with Cooper for people graduating 4 years from now. Would take njms and rwj over HMH tho

Overall I think it depends on other factors. If you like going to Manhattan then HMH. Also think HMH is in a nice area in general than njms. Etc etc.

HMH definitely lacks an academic feel at this point.

I just called the admissions office about when WL movement could occur and I want to share this information with everyone. The administrator said WL movement will likely start at the end of this month into the star of April. I also asked about interviews and they said they will continue to interview until possibly the last day. They were very helpful and nice and said to call back if I had anymore questions. My takeaways from this are WL people may hear earlier then at least I was expecting and interviews are still being given out so do not give up hope yet.

I saw their most recent Instagram post saying that match day was a success and they'll be streaming something on ABC news to talk more about it at 6:15 pm est
 
I would not agree about HMH's match list being better than CMSRU, it is a new school, and it hasn't developed its reputation yet. Moreover, if you look at their first match it was largely in-state institutions (i.e. Hackensack University Medical Center, Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Ocean Medical Center, and JFK University Medical Center.) Having a three-year accelerated program is great and all, however, there are disadvantages you have to consider associated with it. I think in terms of match potential, RWJ=NJMS, CMSRU>Hackensack.

Where did you see the 2021-2022 match list? If I recall correctly, the only class that matched was at the school for three years and therefore had to match at a HMH residency.

Ah, I didn't know they had to match at an HMH residency. I guess we will find out the strength of the program this year.

I have been trying to find any info about their match 2 days ago. Apparently they had one Urology match, Ortho at Mayo and EM at UPenn. That's what's known so far.

I also saw a neurology match at Mt Sinai, which I’m not sure what are the advantages of vs entering HMH neurology in 3 years. I figured most matches outside of HMH would be in specialties not offered just due to the cost savings of not paying for an extra year.

But apparently they have historically given a bunch of half or full tuition scholarships, making the 3 year less important
 
Other matches here: Anesthesia at RWJ and Surgery at Hackensack.

I will continue creeping through social media.

Since you seem a bit closer to the action, what are your initial impressions on first external match? Better or worse than expected? Some of the top matches seem pretty impressive (Mayo Clinic, Sinai, UPenn) but the lack of a full list is concerning.

It was also encouraging that prominent faculty members like Dr. Stifelman seemed to be invested in the success of students. Is this common or was it more of a first class thing?

You touched on something that I have been thinking about. I imagine that every faculty member pulled all possible strings to be able to obtain good matches for the first class. It would be a bit of a disappointment not to see some serious programs.

Still looks like nothing on the external or internal. Not sure if this should be a cause for concern or not

Based on my estimates there should have been 42 external matches since the first class was 60 - 18 who did the accelerated. Even if attrition of 4-5 students, there should be 37-38 matches but I’ve only seen like 5 on the school social media and what not

I believe applicants deserve some level of knowledge about the first match. The school released a match list that was de-identified. For that reason I think some care should be made for the privacy of individual applicants.

For some context, this school allows students to graduate after 3 years on the condition that they match within the Hackensack network. The match list provided has lumped the 4th year general match applicants together with 3rd year Hackensack match applicants. Therefore, any matches outside of Hackensack are 4th year students. However, many 4th year students ended up matching within Hackensack and thus you cannot draw conclusions about whether a match at "JFK Medical Center" is a 4th year student or a 3rd year student.

General info about the 4th year match specifically:
SOAP rate was somewhere between 10 and 20%. SOAPs were not labeled in this document for obvious reason.
Aside from people who needed to SOAP, I believe everyone got their first choice specialty (can't say for sure).

As for commenting on the match itself. If you have specific questions feel free to ask, but otherwise its hard to comment about any particular applicants or whether they were "good" matches or "bad" ones. You also have to keep in mind that an outsider might consider a match at a non-academic program to be "bad", but for the applicant they may have wanted that place due to location, for example.

How would you interpret that 10/63 students went into preliminary positions? Would it be likely that these 10 students had to SOAP into these preliminary positions?
