Geisel SOM at Dartmouth virtual information session:

Panelists will include our Admissions team, but also current students and a member from our DEI office. Our June info session will include a student that is pursuing an MD/MBA if you have any pre-meds interested in a dual degree. See dates, times and registration below:

What are the word counts?

+1 OOS Secondary submitted. Unfortunately not complete as one of my LOR writers backed out last minute, does anyone know if there is a way to change the LOR designations after the primary is sent out? I have another letter I could send instead. My application is stuck on incomplete because I had originally planned to send that letter here. (I've already emailed the admissions team, will update with what they say incase anyone else is in a similar situation)

Check the AMCAS guide on Letters.
I believe you can notify AMCAS that a letter is no longer expected

Mark the letter as "no longer sending" in AMCAS (under the "Letters of Evaluation") tab. This will let schools know they should not expect this letter and allow your app to be reviewed!

How are people approaching "Please reflect on your primary application and share something not addressed elsewhere that would be helpful to the Admissions Committee as we review your file"?

I feel like I covered everything I wanted to in my primary application, besides my plans for 2024-2025, which I address in the first question.

the second question is so stupid like just read my primary like every other school does bruh…. makes it sound like they’re not going to read the primary and just want a cliff notes summary

I'm sure this is a stupid question, but for question 2 I feel like I might be interpreting it wrong. I'm interpreting it as "share something that is not reflected in your primary application", is that correct? I feel like other people are interpreting it as "share things from your primary that are not reflected in your secondary application"

I interpreted it as share something NOT in your primary. But you're right, it's vague.

I'm using this as an opportunity to share an interest/hobby that I didn't include in my activities or writing. It's a good place to add some personality and demonstrate that you are more well rounded 🙂

Are people including labs in the coursework section? For example, I took biochem (lecture course) and biochem lab (lab course). The secondary site says they require a half-year of biochem, but not sure if that requires lab or just lecture.

I assume that to mean only the course, not the lab. If they wanted the lab component too, they would have asked for that explicitly. It would probably be ok to include it anyways though.

At my school, the one year of biology that I took ended up being only 6 credits. They ask for 8 credits "or equivalent" as one year of biology. Do you think that equivalent part means the 6 credits is okay? If I add the two bio labs I took (1 credit each), I'd get up to those 8 credits

Based on their blurb above the course input section, it seems like they define a full year as 8 credits and a half-year as 3 credits. I included my labs only in the full year ones because the standard for semester systems is a 3 credit lecture + 1 credit lab

Makes sense, I did that as well. Thanks

For the "share something not addressed elsewhere that would be helpful to the Admissions Committee" question is it advisable to discuss poor grades and your improvement from it?

I've been discussing this briefly in other "short-comings" essays but I always hesitate when they just have a general "share something helpful" prompt ... I think context and my reflection on my grades as an undergraduate would be helpful when reviewing, and it's the weakest part of my app so not including something seems foolish. Still, it seems like a key opportunity if I had something meaningful or new to share, but I honestly feel like the primary and other spots have been pretty comprehensive.

If you haven't addressed it elsewhere, this is the place to do it.

To anyone who has submitted the secondary, did you all upload a photo? It looks like the application is complete without one, but there is an option to upload one.

are you guys uploading every course that falls into that requirement or stopping after the requirement listed is satisfied? IE I am a biochem major so I took way more than 3 credits of biochem but don't know if i should add them all or just give them the one
The premedical requirements section instructions say "we ask that you only list the courses you are using to meet each requirement and not include additional courses taken in that subject area" so I wouldn't add any biochem courses beyond 3 credits/whatever one-half year is

I'm still a bit confused with this question. I know many people answered with something directly not in the primary, such as an interest or hobby, but the wording is still getting to me.

The question opens with "please reflect on your primary," so is it really asking us to talk about something entirely different and not previously shared on the primary, or is it asking us to expand on something from our primaries with details not shared before?

It explicitly says "not addressed elsewhere."
Therefore, this is not the place to expand or expound about something you already discussed.

If you feel your application already paints a good picture of you, don't write a long list of stuff in this catch-all question.
It does imply they want you to tell "something" new.

Are people approaching the "other" question as a time when you were different than a group of people, or can it be a time when you were different from just one person (someone with a different background from yourself)?

I tried a totally different approach, where I was the "other" as a witness of social injustice and talked about what I did/how I improved. Maybe I went at this wrong, though

Wondering if it would be appropriate to use the anything else essay as a challenge essay? It's mentioned offhand in the other impactful statement, but it's about a pretty significant event in my life

How long are people thinking for their response to Q3? The question is super broad so I'm not sure how much to say

Mine was around 3500 characters but I think that's probably on the longer side for them. I'm hoping to cut down to around 3000

I always struggle to figure out how long an essay without a word limit should be. I'm assuming the 250 word limit from essay 4 is a reasonable target for all the essays but that I can go over if I need,

Can somebody give me a more holistic view of the vibe of geisel? Their website isn't giving me much and I'm having trouble deciphering what is most important to them that I should emphasize about myself to show them. Do they value research, community service, or something else more?

Thanks in advance! Sorry this feels like a silly question

I got strong community service vibe and caring for underserved populations. At least that's how I took it when going through their website. But also another big thing seemed to be initiatives to improve healthcare, they have a whole two year course that seems to be dedicated to teaching students how to look at the healthcare system and find ways to improve it for access/efficiency/effectiveness

That’s what I got too after a few hours digging! 😁 tysm!

Besides their website, I have also heard about an emphasis on rural healthcare around New England, like in the small towns around the valleys and along the coast.
