2024-2025 OHSU Secondary Essay Prompts:

Question 1 - What experience have you had that has given you insight into the patients you hope to eventually serve?

Question 2 - Tell us about a time you went into a situation completely unprepared.

Question 3 - Discuss a time in your life that demonstrated your resilience and ability to overcome adversity.

Question 4 - In 1990, Salovey and Mayer defined emotional intelligence (EI) as “the subset of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and actions”. The components of EI include self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. Briefly describe one example of a time you harnessed your EI to resolve a difficult situation, AND one example of a time your failure to use your EI compounded a difficult situation. What did you learn about yourself in each of these situations?

Question 5 - Give an example of personal feedback in the last few years that was difficult to receive. How did you respond?

Question 6 - Please discuss the roles Dignity, Respect and Deference play in how medical teams optimize patient care.

Question 7 - Optional: Are there any additional ties to the state of Oregon you wish to share? If yes, use the space below. If no, leave blank. Please note that this does not factor toward your consideration as an Oregon resident or Oregon Heritage.

Question 8 - Optional: We know that many of our applicants in the OHSU UME Program may have familial relationships with individuals who are OHSU faculty, residents, staff, or current students who serve as evaluators in our admissions process. We have added this question in hopes to prevent perceived or actual conflicts of interest that can occur when an applicant has a family member (or someone with a similar close personal relationship) they may encounter through the admissions process. If you have any such connections, please list those individuals’ names and departments below. If no, leave blank.

Good luck to all applying!

What are my chances at OHSU. GPA 3.9, mcat 504
from your WAMC, you fit the mission group and make the cutoff for statistics purposes. OHSU will send you a secondary. After that? It’s completely up to you, how you answer questions and what you wrote in your responses to the primary and secondaries, and how you interview (assuming they invite you)

Seems like you have relevant enough EC’s with enough hours to appear competitive. Nobody here can guarantee an interview but OHSU does a holistic approach and having strong OR connections/residency gives you a decent edge in getting that II. Understand that I represent nothing and this is pure speculation on my part.

Anyone else slightly confused by their application portal? why are we relisting letters and parts of our work and activities? whole thing seems strange.

I’m OOS still haven’t gotten a secondary. Any OOS with a secondary?

IS and haven't heard back yet about a secondary. Maybe they do send out in waves even if you got the initial application in early. Anyone else in the same boat?

Those doing MD/MPH, how are you responding to this question? "Would you like your application to be considered for the MD program independently of the dual degree?"

What are character counts?

"Your session timed out - please login again." -- Anyone else trying to add activities? Super frustrating...
Yeah sometimes I had to re-log in four times to get one activity to save. Persistence was key lol, eventually with enough tries it worked

do they send a confirmation when they receive your primary? and do they screen? because the AMCAS guide says they send them to everyone but I am not sure..

Hi! I'm super torn on whether if it is worth sending in a secondary for OHSU. I'm OOS, ORM, and have no ties to Oregon via the resident or heritage policy? Any thoughts/opinions would be much appreciated!

I wouldn't, this may be the worst secondary I've done out of 70 schools.

If we haven't received a secondary by now, should we email admissions or is that annoying? I submitted 5/28 and was verified 6/6...

I wouldn’t. I haven’t received mine yet and am assuming they have a process they have to adhere to prior to sending them out. Just give them time.

That's just how they do it. Other schools have their own oddities, like making you resist every one of your prerequisite courses. It doesn't really take that much time, and it may give you an opportunity to show if anything has changed since submitting your primary.

Unless you have very high statistics or are applying for MD/PhD, you likely won't have a lot of luck on getting an interview. They have a priority list on how they select applicants and if I recall completely from last year, it basically goes In state -> remarkable acheivements (high stats, Rhodes scholar, etc) -> close ties to the state -> everyone else. Once you interview, residency doesn't matter as they score each application and use that internal score to extend acceptance offers/waitlist/reject. They're pretty open about it once you're interviewing. Since some 93% of slots go to Oregon residents, you can understand how competitive it is if you're not IS.

No, they'll just send you a secondary once your primary is processed/reviewed.

Their website also says they do not screen for secondaries. Verify with whatever the school has publicly stated then treat it as gospel. The MSAR is usually correct, but if it differs, go with the website.

Also, please don't be one of those.. "The school says this but I don't believe it". No school has any motivation to lie to you.

Essay 8 says “leave blank if not applicable” but if you leave it blank it doesn’t let you submit. I assume people just did like a blank space or a NA or something?

Same! I was going to do it if the questions were easy but these one are so specific and you have to re-summarize all your AMCAS activities. But also living in Portland would be amazing...

It keeps timing out for me. Thankfully, I was raised to be stubborn; it really comes in handy now when I have to log in three times just to answer one question.

is it worth it to apply to this school OOS with mid-low stats?
OHSU isn’t particularly OOS friendly unless you have strong ties to the area. There’s a lot of things that would factor into it. They like older applicants, service with underserved communities, and Oregon heritage. I think if you have the funds and are willing to take the risk then sure, but honestly you may have a stronger chance elsewhere.

Does OHSU send their secondaries in batches? My primary was verified and submitted to OHSU on July 26th. Haven't received a secondary yet and wanted to gain some insight from others. Thanks in advance.

(IS applicant)

Has anyone gotten a confirmation email that their secondary is completed after submitting? Worried it didn't actually submit because I kept getting logged out... 🙂

Has anyone received an error message / payment declined when they tried to submit their application fee? (I double checked all the info is correct and I have enough $) Trying to figure out if its an error on my card/bank end or if its an issue with OHSU payment service
did you figure it out? encountering the same issue
