I have a quick question. After submitting my secondaries, I got an email stating my Application was "Complete." At the time, I had met the requirements for the Letter of Recommendation (3 letters minimum). But recently, my 4th writer just uploaded the letter to TMDSAS. I was seeing if my 4th letter would be added to my application or would it not be due to the fact that my application is "Complete."

Once TMDSAS has processed letter #4 it will be sent to all the TMDSAS schools on your list.
The maximum number of letters is 4 so you’re done now with TMDSAS letters.

I guess what I am trying to ask is, will UTSW update/include it since my application is marked as "Complete."

Curious about prompt 5. Is it truly optional? Or should I come up with something to discuss? I do not have any extreme academic discrepancies on my record, nor have I had any large extenuating circumstances that would have hindered my college progress. Should I still come up with something to write about for this prompt?
I personally only got a C in one of my courses my freshman year non-science courses but the rest of my grades were good from there on out so I did not include it. Though I did mention it in my Optional Essay (primary apps), I was told you should write about it only if you had something like "academic probation" or some huge event (like a parent's death). The reasoning they gave was UTSW does not want to read more stuff and it is too common for people to have not done "well" during their first year of college. Moreover, a "C" is not a "bad grade" compared to an "F" in a course or "Withdrawal/Drop."

They require all TMDSAS supporting documentation (including LORs) for your application to be considered complete. It is my understanding that only completed applications are eligible for interview invitations.

Last year ii's started rolling out in late July.
Used to be high stat instate people could get called before recs showed up but now they are also going thru full review.

They usually call all high stat students early for the first two months after reviewing them first, even later applicants.

Is it okay for prompt 3, if we talk about a cultural difference we noticed in ourselves (say in high school, teachers didn't understand why I had to do certain practices) and then for prompt 2 I talk about a time I was discriminated against? Or are those two aspects too similar as they revolve around racial/cultural differences?

Also for prompt 1, is it acceptable to talk about something like research, or should it more so center around something non-academic to add to your interests more outside medicine? Ik UTSW is a huge research hub, so I'm just curious

3 is not about you, it is about others and what you have learned.. 2 is about you or others.

it is focused on a group project and group dynamics and what persuasion techniques you used to get people to agree with you.

OOS Secondary for MD/PhD

Prompts are different:
1. Describe the type of research you are currently most interested in pursuing for your PhD training. You can be general or specific (e.g., genetics, biochemistry, Alzheimer’s disease, rational drug design, etc.) (500 characters)

2. Why are you interested in MD/PhD training at UT Southwestern in particular? (500 characters)

3. List names of up to five UT Southwestern faculty whose research is of particular interest to you (faculty must have a laboratory website at Labs).

4. If accepted, would you be able to start with a laboratory rotation by June 28, 2025?

So in 3, even like the origin story of noticing a cultural difference should more so be focused on something i witnessed in others then rather than a cultural difference I noticed in my own culture from others, correct? I know the second half of the essay should show how you impacted others. Thanks for the clarification on prompt 1, I'll make sure the focus is on group dynamics.

3 wants you to notice something different that you have added to your understanding and improve your own values on DEI.

It is possible that you are being treated differently as a minority of some kind but same can be true of you that you found out someone feels you didnt know their situation either. That is the difference between 2 vs 3.

From your experience when does UTSW usually notify for first round of interview invites? From website it says interviews start August so I'm assuming pretty soon?

Whoever got interviews, are all your applications complete with LOR received as well? In other words, did any of you get interview without LOR? I am still waiting for my Committee letter so my application is not complete.

Congrats to everyone getting interviews!! Has anyone OOS gotten one yet?

Can you do it on that day? then take it.
Otherwise politely ask for an alternate date
what is the rationale for having only one day available? I know for other schools like Long slots open for each month as it fills. Does it have to do with the group 1 group 2 thing?

Filling earliest dates first before opening up more dates is efficient and makes students less likely to miss an interview farther in the future or do lots of rescheduling

Some schools try to fill several dates at once while others fill one date at a time before they open new dates.

This early - there is usually only group 1.
