2024-2025 UT Southwestern (UTSW)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sounds like they added some people to finish the open date? What other dates did they have?
8/14 and 8/21, morning and afternoon sessions

Some schools try to fill several dates at once while others fill one date at a time before they open new dates.

This early - there is usually only group 1.
what is group 1/group 2? is it as simple as it sounds... the first group of applicants interviewing are group 1? or is there some sort of utsw significance to being in that 1st group/group 1?

Don’t worry about it - an interview is an interview whenever it comes to you

Any more II's after the initial flurry?
It doesn't look like it. Based on last year's thread, there was a sizable gap between the first wave and second, so we may just need to sit tight and wait for a few weeks. The cycle is still young - don't lose hope! :)

I’ve been so stressed about II’s so I really needed this message

Just received an MSTP II! OOS with no ties but good research overlap

Did anybody who interviewed go to the optional post-interview admissions Q&A? Completely forgot about it today and am a little worried if it's a bad look. I know it's optional though and didn't have any admissions-related Qs to ask myself that I did not get answers for already.

And yeah: IS II 7/29 was complete 7/18.

Barely anyone was there, or at least left really quickly

The irresistible urge for premeds to overanalyze everything and be neurotic, I've been there too. No one is going to think it's a bad look, if they tell you it's optional then they respect you enough to not assume any ill will if you choose not to go. After all, they are requesting YOU for an interview, meaning they already think highly of you. Breathe.

Given how many things in the process are described as "optional" but are not and that some schools track interest, I thought it was a fair question.

No one is blaming you for asking the question, it is a fair question. But don't be offput if the answer is take a deep breath and don't worry about it, especially because the event is over and worrying will do nothing to change that fact.

I've moved on. Thanks for your concern.

Still waiting for that second flurry of II's from UTSW :xf:

Perhaps Admissions will release those soon after reviewing the initial round of interviews which seems to have occurred last week + today.

I forgot too haha, it's okay I will follow in your footsteps and move on. I'm probably gonna e-mail them later today with any questions I may have

Instead of waiting, I think I am going to instead panic and send 50 emails to UTSW's admissions office in a fit of anxiety-fueled rage because I did not get an II in the first month of the interview cycle (I scored in the 0th quartile on CA$PER)

how are the parties?

how are the parties?
Study parties? Very productive haha

The weekend hangouts have been a blast so far though. Overall the MS1 class is an amazing group of people
can second this, the people here are amazing!

I can third this! The weekend hangs have been fun, if you like to party you'll be able to do that at UTSW, if you like to chill and play video games, you can find your people. And anything else really. Living in Dallas is cooler than I expected (and I had some experience with parts of it), at least where I'm at in life. The traffic sucks.

To be perfectly honest - my classmates are the best thing about being at UTSW so far. I'm surrounded by the smartest, kindest, coolest, kindest, smartest students I've ever met. Everyone (besides me lol) has incredibly accomplished and interesting backgrounds, tons of PhDs/Masters degrees/dentists/researchers/EMTs/etc., tons of non-trads, tons of people from around Texas, around the country, and even around the world.
The admin truly did a fantastic job selecting the class (again don't know how I squeezed in, haha but I'm not complaining).

Any time I'm feeling down I've got about 100 people I know can pick me up, between my mentor group and my mentor, my colleges buddies, other friends I've made, the upperclassmen, really any random classmate, its truly incredible. If I don't understand a concept, I'll just walk to a common study room and ask anyone if they know what's going on and I'll quickly have 5 people walking me through it, drawing diagrams on whiteboards, etc. All of us feel like we're in this journey together, and that's been great.

There are several cons that we've picked up on as well, but we're not even 4 full weeks in, so I might wait until I have more perspective to speak definitively on anything.

The schedule is no joke though. The amount of content is insane (you'll truly understand the fire hose analogy when you get there, regardless of school), but also all of the other requirements on top of an insane course load can really push you to your breaking point. Among all these crazy smart and talented people, I don't know anyone who isn't struggling, or who doesn't at least feel like they're struggling (bc our class grades have been decent to good tbh).

We can probably share more detailed break downs of our schedule/day-to-day life once we get used to things a bit. For the first 4 weeks, I feel like for most people it's been like ~60hrs a week studying, with no days completely off (not 100% sure about that, but that's what I've been doing to feel like I'm keeping my head above water). We do finish our biochem class tomorrow (we're also taking anatomy and histology), then start another class Tuesday (rumor is its hard as well). So we'll see!

this is so great to hear!! I was scared because I had heard rumors about the culture at UTSW from another older student there, so it's nice to hear another POV. Thank you for sharing and best of luck with your exams.

Just thought I'd add in, I love it here as well!! The work can be brutal at times lol but every single person I've spoken to has been so welcoming and I really get that feeling of "we're in this together" even though we might be struggling. I was initially scared because of the "toxic" rumors I heard about utsw, but I truly feel a great sense of camaraderie here.

Does anyone know if UTSW has any preference for applicants who've done UTSW programs like Amgen, STARS, and SURF? I know it doesn't hurt to have done these programs but how if any does it affect admissions?
