2024-2025 UT Southwestern (UTSW)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I can third this! The weekend hangs have been fun, if you like to party you'll be able to do that at UTSW, if you like to chill and play video games, you can find your people. And anything else really. Living in Dallas is cooler than I expected (and I had some experience with parts of it), at least where I'm at in life. The traffic sucks.

To be perfectly honest - my classmates are the best thing about being at UTSW so far. I'm surrounded by the smartest, kindest, coolest, kindest, smartest students I've ever met. Everyone (besides me lol) has incredibly accomplished and interesting backgrounds, tons of PhDs/Masters degrees/dentists/researchers/EMTs/etc., tons of non-trads, tons of people from around Texas, around the country, and even around the world.
The admin truly did a fantastic job selecting the class (again don't know how I squeezed in, haha but I'm not complaining).

Any time I'm feeling down I've got about 100 people I know can pick me up, between my mentor group and my mentor, my colleges buddies, other friends I've made, the upperclassmen, really any random classmate, its truly incredible. If I don't understand a concept, I'll just walk to a common study room and ask anyone if they know what's going on and I'll quickly have 5 people walking me through it, drawing diagrams on whiteboards, etc. All of us feel like we're in this journey together, and that's been great.

There are several cons that we've picked up on as well, but we're not even 4 full weeks in, so I might wait until I have more perspective to speak definitively on anything.

The schedule is no joke though. The amount of content is insane (you'll truly understand the fire hose analogy when you get there, regardless of school), but also all of the other requirements on top of an insane course load can really push you to your breaking point. Among all these crazy smart and talented people, I don't know anyone who isn't struggling, or who doesn't at least feel like they're struggling (bc our class grades have been decent to good tbh).

We can probably share more detailed break downs of our schedule/day-to-day life once we get used to things a bit. For the first 4 weeks, I feel like for most people it's been like ~60hrs a week studying, with no days completely off (not 100% sure about that, but that's what I've been doing to feel like I'm keeping my head above water). We do finish our biochem class tomorrow (we're also taking anatomy and histology), then start another class Tuesday (rumor is its hard as well). So we'll see!
Also current MS1 and agree with everything! I’ve never been a campus studier in the past but my amazing classmates have been very nice and helpful 🙂 I was also worried coming in having heard about the “toxic” environment but that hasn’t been the case at all.

Does anyone know if UTSW has any preference for applicants who've done UTSW programs like Amgen, STARS, and SURF? I know it doesn't hurt to have done these programs but how if any does it affect admissions?
Never heard of any such preferences. They count for your research/ECs but they are not special because one did them at UTSW.
However, if someone has a rec from a renowned prof at UTSW because of these programs, that might add value to your app.

Thanks -- appreciate your insight! I did one of their high school programs, and worked with a renowned prof who wrote me a letter for undergraduate admissions but decided not to include for medical school applications since it was over 6 years ago.

Since UTSW doesn't have an undergraduate program, I was just hoping having done it would somehow play a role for grad school admissions. Even though it was in high school, I still did include it on my TMDSAS activities section so hopefully that helps describe my contribution to the UTSW community 😀

Hey guys, just dropping in to say good luck this cycle!

If you have any questions about applying/interviewing just ask them here, or send me a dm. I'll be as honest as I can and answer any questions ASAP.

What was the vibe of the interviews like? Are there any ethics/healthcare questions?
Super chill interviews for me, they were both very much like casual conversations. I think the types of questions are very interviewer-dependent. I personally didn’t have any ethics qs but some of my friends said they did!

My experience was similar to @taco1572's! Two pretty chill 1-on-1 interviews.

One with a PhD researcher, who only lectures a tiny bit for MS1/MS2 so we mostly talked about research. Tbh it felt a bit awkward overall, but not too bad.

One was with a MD faculty member, and that one went really well.

I don't remember any ethics, situational, or 'gotcha' type questions, just seemed like they wanted to get to know me better. And they had clearly read my application, which is always nice.

Definitely prepare for the common interview questions ('tell me about yourself,' 'what are your strengths/weaknesses,' etc.) and try to be personable. Also definitely try to go in with a positive mindset. At my interview day there were a ton of really impressive interviewees, but if you made it to the interview, you deserve to be there and have a good shot of getting in.

The presence or absence of a ethics/healthcare question or any difficult question will greatly be dependent on your interviewer. Some may choose to ask you them, some may not. At the end of my interview, the my interviewer asked me 2 random out of the blue brain teasers where I had to think on my feet.

My friend who interviewed for them was pressed to answer about a journal cover there was little chance he had seen, while another buddy of mine was asked a question on abortion and to compare and contrast a random country in Africa's healthcare compared to a random country in Europe, again which he had probably no way of knowing or being able to answer (I believe the idea here is to see if you are able to comfortably say 'I don't know' without choking, pausing, or making up stuff).

These are all anecdotal, which means these are not concrete or generalizable examples, but the point that I am making is that the "vibe" of your interview will largely depend on you and your interviewer. There may be brain teaser/gotcha/difficult ethics questions, there may not. I suppose it is notable that this school is willing or MAY have in their interviewer guidebook/pamphlet or whatever they get certain questions that are meant to be difficult or have a critical thinking component (because it definitely felt like my interviewer was reading from a script/set of questions) more so than other schools, but there is no way to know how YOUR interview will be.

Good luck.

That's wild lol.

Yeah I didn't have anything like that (although it's been a minute so I might be forgetting something, but definitely not an abortion question), but it seems like YMMV.

Does UTSW send Pre-II R emails by chance? I know it's early in the cycle (my bad y'all, don't mean to be neurotic), but I've heard from just about every school in Texas but them, and I'm kind of confused (don't mean to sound entitled or anything, all interviews are amazing, I just want to know what's going on, y'know?)

It’s rare to get interviews from all the schools.
If you haven’t been invited by UTSW by Dec 1 you can assume it’s not happening

I think they send Pre-II emails when they finish interviews. On the other hand, not to be superstitious, but I randomly decided checked my portal today to make sure my LORs are in and for some reason the AMP portal says my password is expired. Updated the password. Probably totally unrelated but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That's exactly what I was looking for, thank you! And yes, I've been very, very grateful for the luck I've had so far, I was just hoping to hear from UTSW since they're so close to home - still have a few months, but if not, life's tough, onwards and upwards, and all that. Thanks wysdoc 🙂

late November are probably the last invites and you are not out until they have run out of dates to fill.

100%, thank you 🙂 I was just worried since everyone I know with similar stats to mine was interviewed by now at this point last year, but I’m slowly learning that comparison is the thief of joy and all that. I’ll just focus on the interviews I do have right now, and what happens, happens.

+1 IS II today around 4PM Central. LM 83, submitted early, forgot when!

Does anyone know when the AM vs PM slot is? I can't see any info about which time each section starts.

The best way to get an interview at UTSW is to be instate attending a big name OOS school.
Eh, that might help with getting an interview, but the schools with the most representation in our class are UT Austin and Rice.

OOS school with the largest representation is BYU (pretty sure, they gave a presentation at the beginning of the year), which is not what most would consider a "big name."

There's also a ton of students from 'smaller'/lesser known schools (in TX and OOS).

So even if that helps you get your foot in the door (especially if you're an OOS student), you still have a perfectly good shot of getting in without going to a "big name"

If they are interviewed, they usually get admitted. Doesnt mean they have to show up. 🙂

There was a guy in the last graduation batch who was 6'5" and played football for Stanford.
There was another stanford grad, a Berkeley grad, a columbia grad and Rhodes college grad in that batch to name a few.

As a BYU student, I can confirm that tons of kids from my school end up at Southwestern/Baylor/Long/TTech

can anyone tell me how there are so many BYU students with perfect MCAT scores. I see so many videos on youtube and even look through linkedin and i see so many BYU students with 520+ it's insane

Sampling bias from reddit/SDN most likely. Also considering it is a great state school, the percentiles may be skewed at that school. Schools with more rigorous undergrad curriculum likely prepare students better for the MCAT on average. This is not to say that someone that isn't from an established state school CAN'T do well on the MCAT, it's just less likely.

UT has a lot of its applicant data published, most recent i can find is EY2021. 15% of applicants at UT had a 520+ MCAT vs. the national distribution of 3%. I'm sure BYU has similar, if not better stats (I could not find any distributions for them, just that their average TX resident had a 520 MCAT).

Sorry, but you're literally just making stuff up. 🙂

There's no available data that shows this (number/ratio of IIs or As given to students from "big name school" whatever that means), and you have no insider knowledge to base these claims on

Pre-meds don't need any more baseless fear mongering/rumor spreading than already exists. If you get an interview, it's safe to assume you are on similar footing as students from "big name schools."

Trust me, there are definitely BYU students who do not score that highly, several of my friends are in the 500-515 range. However, nearly all of the BYU students who end up at Texas schools scored a 520+. That being said, because several Texas schools have nearly half of their OOS matriculants coming from BYU, it seems like a lot of people

Don't know if you meant BYU is a great state school as in it is a great school that much of the state goes to, but it is a private institution, not a public state university

How many of you at UTSW and how many are instate?

UTSW likes service. Do most you who are in med schools have done the 2 year service?

I'm not at UTSW, just have friends who went. I know they usually take around 5/year from BYU. Baylor takes around 6-8 and Long usually takes 10+ (also like 15 or so combined at the two Techs).

And yes, most in medical school have done the two year mission, it;s definitely a unique experience that can help!

Very attractive attribute in a future doc for most medical schools that someone believes in service and have already spent 2 years of their life doing so.

OOS II!! No ties to TX
LM 81, submitted on 6/12

TMDSAS is turning out to have been a good investment for me so far
Let's goooooo we love a good OOS underdog story! Only 1 so far for me, hoping to be in the same boat 🤞

IS LM 75 with no UTSW II and submitted mid June, should I assume it’s not happening

I am in the same boat and still optimistic. It’s early in the cycle. It isn’t over till its over. Hang in there!! You never know when that coveted email will appear in your inbox 🙂
Also for all its worth, I sent an update a couple of weeks ago with some meaningful updates which may have made them re -review my file. Hadn't heard anything from them or other Texas schools since submissions. So if you have anything to update them on, it could be worth your time.

what are the Post II success rates for OOS applicants here?
some of the schools:
According to MSAR, Last year UTSW interviewed 778 people total, 104 OOS, 674 instate. 202 IS A's, 29 OOS A's, so around a 28% chance off rip.

Baylor: 1124 total interviewed, 175 OOS II's, 226 total A's, 39 OOS A's, 22% chance for an A if you get an II as an OOS.

Long: 226 OOS II's, 1101 II'S total. 29 OOS A's, 232 A's total. 12.5% chance (oof)

Mcgovern: 1110 total II's, 114 OOS II's. 12 OO's A's, 240 total A's. 10.5% chance (bigger oof)
(MD-PHD not included for any)

A=Matriculated LOL

I wonder how these percentages account for the match system? Would it skew the data or is it generally the same?

Wait you're right, that's a misread on me, those technically aren't "A's", just people who matriculated. Forgot about how the match and prematch messes with things. I don't think we will ever know the true acceptance data unless they give it to us.
