I can third this! The weekend hangs have been fun, if you like to party you'll be able to do that at UTSW, if you like to chill and play video games, you can find your people. And anything else really. Living in Dallas is cooler than I expected (and I had some experience with parts of it), at least where I'm at in life. The traffic sucks.
To be perfectly honest - my classmates are the best thing about being at UTSW so far. I'm surrounded by the smartest, kindest, coolest, kindest, smartest students I've ever met. Everyone (besides me lol) has incredibly accomplished and interesting backgrounds, tons of PhDs/Masters degrees/dentists/researchers/EMTs/etc., tons of non-trads, tons of people from around Texas, around the country, and even around the world.
The admin truly did a fantastic job selecting the class (again don't know how I squeezed in, haha but I'm not complaining).
Any time I'm feeling down I've got about 100 people I know can pick me up, between my mentor group and my mentor, my colleges buddies, other friends I've made, the upperclassmen, really any random classmate, its truly incredible. If I don't understand a concept, I'll just walk to a common study room and ask anyone if they know what's going on and I'll quickly have 5 people walking me through it, drawing diagrams on whiteboards, etc. All of us feel like we're in this journey together, and that's been great.
There are several cons that we've picked up on as well, but we're not even 4 full weeks in, so I might wait until I have more perspective to speak definitively on anything.
The schedule is no joke though. The amount of content is insane (you'll truly understand the fire hose analogy when you get there, regardless of school), but also all of the other requirements on top of an insane course load can really push you to your breaking point. Among all these crazy smart and talented people, I don't know anyone who isn't struggling, or who doesn't at least feel like they're struggling (bc our class grades have been decent to good tbh).
We can probably share more detailed break downs of our schedule/day-to-day life once we get used to things a bit. For the first 4 weeks, I feel like for most people it's been like ~60hrs a week studying, with no days completely off (not 100% sure about that, but that's what I've been doing to feel like I'm keeping my head above water). We do finish our biochem class tomorrow (we're also taking anatomy and histology), then start another class Tuesday (rumor is its hard as well). So we'll see!
