ATSU/KCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i was wondering how the diverse the population is here for the students. i've been hearing from other people who have interviewed here and they told me it was all white people. not to be racist or anything, but im from nyc and i like having a diverse student body when it comes to school.

i know KCOM is a great school considering the history behind it. I have an interview on Jan. 20th. I've been trying to decide whether or not to go because I wanna go back to NYC for rotations and residency. do you know if they have rotations back in nyc?

I think it all depends on how you view diversity. To me, there is more to diversity than just color. I don't have any numbers to quote, but I know that we have a mixture of Japanese, Vietnamese, Indian, African American, and Russian (plus more that I'm probably not aware of). There are also people from many different backgrounds in terms of socioeconomic status, small town vs. big city dwellers, and multiple religions. Hopefully this helps a little about your first question. It's all in your own personal perspective. I think the only way to really get a feel for a school is to visit it, not just look at statistics.

As far as rotations, the list right now has rotations in York, Pennsylvania and Newark, New Jersey. The list can change next year and the year after. Those were the Northeast sites available to our class though.

Hopefully this info. is helpful to you. Where ever you decide to go, I wish you luck!

Thanks, I appreciate the input about diversity since I haven't thought about it like that. I think I will go to the interview and check it out.

I didn't know they changed rotation sites year by year but I think I will ask them about it during my interview. How is Missouri by the way? Is it usually cold?

Hey! I just got an interview invite for this Friday, Dec 17. Is anyone else interviewing then?

And also, for those of you who have already interviewed, what kinds of questions do they ask?

It depends on how you interview with, but they are very conversational and mostly deals directly with your application. Also other basics like why DO, and could you see your self living in Kirksville etc.

fyi, senior year at kcom is mostly elective, 14 weeks of electives I believe. So if you're worried about where you do rotations, don't be. You will have ample time to do away/audition rotations in nyc or where ever.

They don't change a lot each year, but sites potentially can be added or deleted. Also, the post about the electives is a good point. Your 4th year is a lot of electives for out rotations at different sites.

Missouri is generally cold from around mid-November-February/March. We had a fairly warm November, but it's kind of cold now.

I grew up in St. Louis, so I'll tell you what it is like there. Summer, hot. Winter, cold. Tornado season is spring, or whenever there is a good change in the temps (again, usually spring/early summer). Granted there are deviations, I've barbequed in January because it was in the 70s, but I've also seen flurries in April. Basically, it's in the middle so you'll get to experience both ends of the spectrum.

And right now, I think everyone east of the Rockies is freezing. It was single digits here this morning. Very atypical. Thanks, Canada.

I guess i'll be adding to the "diversity" in KCOM. Just sumbitted my deposit last Friday! KCOM c/o 2015!

Anyone else from SoCal planning to attend?

Thanks for the input about KCOM everyone. I guess the weather is similar to NYC. I didn't know they had tornadoes though. thats kinda scary haha. we got hit by the first tornado ever and it basically destroyed a lot of property and trees.

It's the midwest, yes, there are tornadoes. Hence, "tornado alley." But, it's not as bad as places like OK, NE, or KS. We didn't get the long range EF5 ones. Just remember, green sky usually isn't good. And, they have good warning systems now (like tornado sirens, which we don't have where I live now). Don't worry! I wouldn't consider going here if I thought I'd be run over by a twister - it's why I didn't apply to anything in OK hahah

Just rescheduled my interview to Jan 20. Wish it could be even earlier...

Congrats! you're gonna love it! I interviewed with a researcher, someone on adcom, and a D.O., which I believe is the layout for everyone. The researcher didn't ask me much about wanting to be a D.O. she just wanted to know about me, my interest, and how I came about wanting to be a doctor. I panicked when I couldn't think of the name of the cyanobacteria I did research on but she reassured me I was doing ok and I later remembered it because I was able to relax. The Adcom person was very knowledgeable and also just wanted to get to know me. The D.O. was the best of all. It was very conversational, and he gave a scenario to see how I would respond but they were just medical ethics issues where there was no right answer only trying to see your thought process.

Overall, the most difficult question I was asked during my interview was "If you are not accepteded into medical school what's next?" I know the answer but it is just horrible to think of that possibility!

Unfortunately, I had to leave early and didn't not get to stay for Fin aid, Still Well presentation or tour. But everyone was very understanding. As for diversity for those that want to know. As an AA I felt very comfortable at the school and was welcomed like everyone else. Growing up in the city, the transformation to a small town where I can do fun things I never tried like hiking or taking a canoe trip will be different and exciting! I hope to get in:xf:

Does anyone know how they notify you if you have been accepted? Do they call? Or do you have to wait for snail mail? Has anyone been accepted that interviewed last week? Or is everyone still playing the waiting game?? AHHH this is KILLING me!

First Acceptance!! I loved the school, and it is definitely one of my top two choices. I'm so relieved to have an acceptance, talk about early christmas present.

They call you the day they meet, then you receive a packet in the mail.

If I interviewed 12/6 and it seems as though people from before that date and after that date have posted acceptances with calls this morning, is it over for me? I am sorry to be so annoying on this thread lately, I just loved KCOM and would be really sad if I was rejected. I felt like I rocked my interviews...so I am super sad that I haven't been called today 🙁

😀 THIS IS HOW MY FACE IS STUCK! Got the call today while I was sleeping for work tonight. Now sleep is out of the question...This could only happen through the grace of God as he knows what is in your heart and all you can handle. I will do everything for him in the name of his son that died for my sins which I have recently repented for and became born again. After this all things in my life has been on track.

🙂Submitted app: Oct 19th
🙂Secondary request: Oct 20th
🙂Submitted 2ndary:Nov 2nd
🙂Called for interview Dec. 7th offered a close date bc I live in STL and someone cancelled.
😍Interviewed: Dec. 13th, informed I wouldn't know a decision til early Jan. (Clearly, That wasn't in God's plan. )
😀Recieved acceptance call today Dec. 16 @ 4:07pm, didn't let Meghan get out a word b4 praising the Lord 12 times over! Was offered a $10,000 scholarship as well Once again NOBODY BUT GOD! I can't take credit for this achievement bc although I worked hard it was only through my faith I was able to devote myself to my studies and doing well in the community to become the perfect candidate for ATSU-KCOM😀 PM me for more info.

For those of you who are waiting. Give yourself to the lord by accepting his son Jesus as your saviour and all things will work in your favor.

When were you complete?

I think I was complete around Dec 1. But I go to college in Kirksville, so they called and asked if I wanted to fill in for a cancellation. Otherwise my interview would have been Jan 27.

My secondary has been complete for a week, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

My secondary has been complete for around a week. I have a 24 MCAT and 3.8 GPA, does anyone think I have reasonable chance of getting an interview?

GPA looks good, and MCAT isn't terrible... What else have you done, ec's, shadowing, experience, ect...

Waitlisted 🙁 Does anyone know how much movement (if any) there is off the waitlist?

no worries, i hear a lot of names come off the wait list, especially when deposits are due and are not payed and people who have been holding multiple spots decide not to go to KCOM and thus give up their spots. For example, I was accepted a few weeks ago (yay!) but decided to go to an instate med school that I recently found out I got into. The tuition is a lot lower, and med school isn't cheap. Sooooo theres at least one spot open for the waitlist 🙂

Don't let the waitlist get you down! When I applied, I didn't interview until February, was waitlisted, and barely had to wait a week or two before I was off the waitlist and in the class! You would be surprised how much turnover there is due to people getting into other schools, changing their minds, etc.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Thanks...hopefully that will be the case with me! Merry Christmas! 👍

I scheduled my interview to KCOM a few weeks ago for Jan 10th. I'm excited for it. Anybody have any tips? I saw the one post talked about scholarships being offered too. Are there a lot of them available? Also, do they look down upon you wanting to do your rotations outside MO, even though they offer national sites? Happy New Years everybody! 🙂

Hey! I do the OTM demo on that day 😀. They do not look down upon you wanting to do rotations outside MO because they want you to be happy where ever you choose to go(and there are definitely not enough sites for all of us to stay in MO)! You have to live there, so they strongly encourage you to consider whatever is important to you in making your decision. They host a hospital day in the Fall that 1st years are also invited to where the different rotation sites and even some residency sites come and you can ask questions, etc. They come from all different states, and there is definitely no pressure on you to stay in MO if that isn't what you would like to do. The only thing they require you to do in Missouri is your 2 week preceptorship which you do the summer in between your 1st and 2nd year.

Hope that helps 🙂

Just withdrew my app and canceled my interview...hopefully that helps one of you...good luck!!!

Yes it does! Thank you! I'll make sure to say hi if I can during the demo🙂

Just received my interview invite yesterday. I will be interviewing Feb 14th....how romantic. 🙂 Who else will be there?

I just got an interview invite also yesterday. Ill probably be going on the 7th or 11th of feb.

They fill up pretty fast. If you are sure you are coming to KCOM I would jump on them as fast as you can! I would have lived there, but I decided too late and they were full. Housing anywhere in Kirksville is reasonable but student housing is a good deal in my opinion. Its a bit like dorm living but I've never heard too many complaints from the people that live there.

Can any current KCOM students comment on the student housing? These apartments look particularly appealing to me...should I be jumping on this now or do I still have some time before they usually fill up? Are they reasonably priced? Is the furniture in good condition? Generally good/bad experiences? Thanks in advance - I'll probably call on Monday to find out more.

To those of you interviewing soon - good luck, not that you'll need it! The interviews are so laid back you won't even know you're interviewing. Everyone is ridiculously nice and helpful - and if you bring a guest, rest assured they will be well taken care of. 👍

i just had my interview day on thursday (1/6). i was really impressed with how welcoming and supportive the admissions staff, faculty, and current students all were. to the other applicants i met on my interview day, best of luck! hopefully we'll all get good news soon!

Hey all, I have an interview coming up on the 14th and was wondering if it would be possible to skip the campus tour and leave Kirksville around 2? Are there students who leave the campus before the tour? Also, would it be looked down up if I were to leave before the tour? Thanks!

Students leave early all the time in order to catch their planes. The school is very good about getting you out when you need. They won't hold it against you at all, just give them a heads up. Good luck.

Hey 307Doc, thanks for the reply. I will let the school know if I can't stay for the tour.

Has anyone who was placed on hold been contacted for an interview yet?

Interviewed mid-November and it looks like they finally got around to reviewing my application. It was worth the wait though, because I got the accepted call this morning 🙂.
