Hi All,

I have been accepted to these awesome schools (all out of state) and am having a hard time deciding between them. I am interested in a surgical specialty for residency. Does anybody have any input regarding these schools?

Thanks in advance!

Congrats on getting into three great schools! Honestly, they'll all probably do about the same in terms of creating opportunities. Go where you want to live and where it makes the most sense financially. Also, OHSU is probably a little better than the others for primary care, but that doesn't seem to be what you're interested in so just figure it out based on where you want to be/the vibes you get at second look.

Look over match lists and see generally what % of each class is matching into surgery. I would pick USC or Boston U in this scenario, depending on whether your preference for the future is west coast or northeast.

Don't listen to this advice.

Figure out which school has the most elective time during the third and fourth year and which will cost you the least.

That being said, USC has the best reputation amongst the 3, and would personally be my pick.

I'm in the same boat - deciding between BUMC and USC, most people on this thread seemed to point to USC as the best choice, and my gut says go there, but I'd like to get some more input on Boston. I do have family there, and have travelled there in the summer, no family in LA or Calif, but it is closer to my home, and it is hard to beat the weather. However BU seems to have better housing options, and it seems like if I'm living in the BU housing that it would be a closer knit student community. Admittedly all the news this year showing the incredible amounts of snow they got is not helping. Any other thoughts out there?

USC! If you're interested in surgery, LAC+USC medical center is known for essentially being run by residents. I can imagine you will get the best clinical/surgical experience there. Plus, LA is awesome and can be cheaper than Boston if you do it right (although you will need to have a car, no getting around that).

I would honestly go with which school feels better for you, since they are similar in rating and residency match quality. I am from Boston; it is cold and the winters do suck. (Fall, Spring, and Summers are lovely tho!!) Since Boston is a GREAT walking city and has great public transportation, this means you will be in the elements more (not in a car), so the wind and bitter cold will hurt. But, personally BOSTON >>> LA. Also, I have lived in different neighborhoods in Boston and it is expensive. Further out from downtown, it is cheaper. Brookline, JP, Mission Hill are good areas to look at.

I have friends who live in LA, and the vibe I get is that you get more for what you pay for in terms of housing there.

Good Luck!

Thanks all - tough choices. Love the weather in LA, but not the traffic and the idea of the commute.
