Class of 2017.... how you doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Ugh, me too... I have rounds at 730 and will be driving to the hospital when the results come out at 7 (central time).... trying to strategize now how / when to look.
Be safe and don't check while driving! Go to school early, check when you get there?

The clinicians will realize it's match day. That day and NAVLE results day there is a little extra leniency at places I've been since we've all been there and know how scary/exciting it is When you find out where you matched, be excited, tell your loved ones, and then relax because the stress is over (for a while anyway!). Hopefully it works out for everyone, but if it doesn't tell your clinicians and then get started on the scramble stuff. My fingers are crossed for you all.

I'm a little anxious lol. Truth be told, I'm just really excited to see where everyone ends up and I'm hoping everyone ends up somewhere that they're happy with :)

Congrats to everyone who matched today!!!

First off--congrats!!! So excited for everyone!

(Second...would anyone who matched be willing to PM their GPA? I'm trying to beat back the idea of specialization, but it keeps creeping up on me. I have other factors that may help me out, but I know GPA/rank is a fairly big factor...I may not even be in the realm of being competitive...thaaaank you!!!)

Anyone that knows MA want to give me the low down on housing and how not to spend my fabulous salary solely on rent?

Congrats to all the matchers! So exciting! :D

I have a few questions regarding networking in 4th year and LORs for internship applications for you seasoned folks if you don't mind... Firstly, as of now, I want to do a radiology residency, so I was wondering when I get to UTK in June if I should try to find the radiologists and introduce myself and all that ASAP or wait until my first rotation with them? Secondly, for internship, is it best to get clinicians from different services to write you LORs or would it be fine to have multiple radiologists write me LORs or something since I plan to hopefully get to know them pretty well?

Thank you in advance! :)

I would recommend introducing yourself ASAP. You want clinicians from multiple services writing you letters. I had four letters: three surgeons and an internist. Although my letters were strong, I know it was a detriment that I had so many surgeons writing me letters. I was told the best to have is an internist, ECC, and then a specialty you're interested in or someone that's known you for a long time. Also, I was told to make sure you have someone from your school writing you a letter, as it should be someone that's known you for more than just one rotation.

Okay awesome, thanks so much for the reply! I feel so lost thinking about the fact that I have to apply for internships this year, so this was super helpful :)

I agree with @Rwwilliams - Introduce yourself ASAP and see how you can get to spend time with radiology even if your not on that rotation - are there rounds you can go to, do they have research going on you can get involved with? stuff like that. I also agree you need a variety of LOR writers - it shows you are well rounded. I ended up having a double boarded Med oncology/Rad oncology, a double boarded IM/Criticalist, a surgeon, and a medical oncologist.

Introduce yourself as soon as you get there, definitely ask about extra rotations or opportunities/ imaging on call or radiology journal club stuff etc. There is a Jan 2017 SGU grad who just matched at UTK for SA rotating - I can put you in contact if you are not already.
As for LOR - If you approach clinics with the right attitude, you will have several clinicians to choose from. I had a surgeon, a well known IntMed, and a Cardiologist. The cardiologist offered to write me a letter after his rotation, I wasn't sure then if I was going to apply. I asked the surgeon midway through my second rotation with him after a resident said "If you haven't asked, you should, he raves about you to the residents." I asked the DACVIM as a good third letter as he was respected faculty, and he gave me excellent advice on picking varied, not just IM if that was an interest, and making sure they knew my work and were willing to write me an excellent letter, not just a letter.

Remember, though you will only have 3-4 letters, many other faculty will be part of the discussions in the second week of January conference calls. So don't think you only need to impress your LOR writers, be fabulous at all times. I had a great case that ended up in the owner donating to the VMC in our names, and the IM doc I worked it with turned out to be head of MNs selection committee (and not one of my LOR).

Wow, that's awesome! Thanks for the advice :) Are you an SGU grad? I'd love to know who will be interning at UTK while I'm there!

I am! I'm SGU DVM/MPH c/o Jan 2017. I founded the SCACVP chapter down there. You may have heard of my cupcakes ;).

FTB CONGRATS! (and everyone else too of course)

Thanks nyanko!!!

AHHHH Who are you?! I don't think I've heard of your cupcakes though :( Which is strange because I'm usually all over every bake sale here haha. A friend and I founded a Radiology club for the SVM :) I'll PM you so I can stop hijacking y'all's thread haha

I got my intern packet! I have to tell them my scrub sizes and how I want my name to show up on my name tag and everything! It doesn't even feel real after all this time.

yeah but...now you'll have to deal with that @LetItSnow guy ;)

FTB is safe. :) I never refer cases to UMN (well, ok, almost never) because I'd rather refer/transfer to the docs I work side-by-side with. Only time I send people to UMN is when it's a specialty we don't have in-house or if the specialists just can't accommodate it due to time or something. But UMN doesn't really have any capabilities we don't have (at least, that matter for my work).

I did call UMN once for an ER consult at 3AM about a case that had my stymied .... and ended up speaking to an Intern with even less experience than me. :) So that's the last time I do that. I dunno why I even bothered - we have 6 other docs on duty in our hospitals, so there is always someone available to chat with. And I should have remembered that it's an intern overnight, not a resident. In my head I was hoping for a 2nd- or 3rd-year resident. Was tired, I guess.

@fromthebox , contrats on the internship. UMN is a great place to learn! My lack of referring to them has nothing to do with the quality care they can provide. Just don't need to.

I did?

There was a second time?

Wait, what?

Are you sure you told me you were in town?? I've been looking for an excuse to go back to that restaurant!

Yeah I think we met up in...what, 2013 the first time? I was at a course in St. Paul

I was there again for a conference in 2015 in Minneapolis, I think you ended up having some family stuff you couldn't get away from.

Well, come back. Now that I'm a working stiff, I have oodles of free time.

Any Illinois people around? Looking for information on getting Illinois state license and getting confused with the info online. Hoping someone from there can clarify the process a bit for me :)
