Class of 2020... how you doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Our orientation is a week long, with Monday being iVLE (Illinois veterinary leadership experience), Tuesday and wednesday getting final shenanigans taken care of (helping with school tours), and then Thursday and Friday being actual orientation. And Thursday is our little sib big sib bar crawl.
Your iVLE is probably pretty similar to our camp (it's modeled after VLE), which is the Wednesday and Thursday before classes start. Then the welcome event and white coat are on Friday.

lol we have a full two weeks of forced girl scout camp before our firsties do white coat and actually start classes. I kinda wish we had a little orientation at the beginning of second year to get to know our new small groups but alas we just start with renal.

Third years at my school don't really have anything to do with welcoming first year activities and I am very sad 🙁

Yeah, we’re not really involved either. But I’ll probably travel during their orientation anyway 😉 definitely need a vacation after clinics

In fact we got told off by the school for trying to be involved with the new first years  oopsie

Because it's the second years' job to interact with them, not ours haha. So we just get to see them in September I guess!
Still seems silly to get yelled at about it. I'm glad I get to hang around at our welcome day. I need to absorb some of their enthusiasm lol

Aaah, you guys are all third years now and you're halfway done! That's crazy! It doesn't even feel like that long ago that we were all posting about orientation and how nervous we were to start vet school.

I'm still with the c/o 2020 in spirit. 🙂
:biglove:

I also wish I could help with our orientation this year, but for some reason I thought doing an externship during the last 3 weeks of my summer was a good idea. :smack: Today was really interesting and I'm loving getting more experience with exotics, but this summer has gone by way too fast!

Anyone want to take bets on whether I somehow find a way to adopt my spay dog? Currently have 3 cats, 2 rabbits, and 4 rats. I need a dog to round them out, right? 😛
I'm definitely going to end up adopting something lol

I’ve officially adopted animals every year of Vet school so far. Well, technically I brought the kittens home during the summer... but I’m going to count them towards third year anyway.

I purposely live in a house that doesn't allow pets for this very reason.

Only a week left of summer! 😢 I'm looking forward to seeing my friends again, and I'm excited for some of our classes (mainly exotic pet medicine 😍), but I'm not looking forward to our anesthesia quiz next Wednesday. At least we don't actually start surgeries until the beginning of October, so I have a bit before that stress begins.

We have our exotics class tooooo. Plus I'm taking an aquatics elective (doesn't start until october) and a wildlife disease elective. And I'm excited for repro.

But pretty sure we start surgeries week 2. So....yikes.

You guys are all giddy like a bunch of first years. Cut it out.
LET ME HAVE WHAT LITTLE EXCITEMENT I HAVE LEFT

But for real this upcoming semester is supposed to be our hardest, and I inexplicably chose to take 3 electives and also continue with research and my job on top of it. Plus all my club positions.

Sooooo death awaits

Can @finnickthedog and I plan your funeral? We’re real good at it. @cdoconn was our second client and sinbad was our first

Wednesdays are my 12 hour days (dont ask why, it's because I'm an idiot), so basically hit the ground running since the semester started today. Yesterday. Whenever Wednesday was. Somehow I'm not dead. Somehow.

Yes pls

No classes tomorrow though, just an all day conflict management seminar. There will be free food and we will probably get done early so I'm ok with it.

Also, I started using Anki again. We'll see how it goes, so far making the cards in class is at least going fairly well, I'll have to go back to make ones that have images and stuff.

Also also, I love repro just as much as I thought I would.

Lemme know if you want Anki protips, Anki is my absolute jam

I think you may have posted them here or somewhere else before, and I remember most of it but hey if you want to give me more tips I'm all ears! I know it works well for me as a study method, I am just looking to make it as efficient as possible, because the amount of time it took me to make the cards is why I stopped using it last year

I'm planning on making some vlog episodes about it eventually but that time hasn't come yet  I usually make my cards in class so I actually pay attention, and I can make flashcards of the fun little tidbits profs love to throw in haha.

I think it depends on whether you want to dive fully into Anki (cause if you're making flashcards, you ain't taking notes) or not, because if you aren't using class time to make the flashcards it eats up soooo much of your out of school time. I used to take notes and then make flashcards at home in first semester of first year; by the time the more intensive second semester rolled around I was so behind on making flashcards even though I was spending 2-3 hours a night at home. It just wasn't sustainable! But I knew the cards worked for me so I dove in!

So in class I usually have Anki pulled up on one side of my screen and the lecture notes on the other, and I work "ahead" of the prof a bit making flashcards and if I run into things that are confusing or need explanation I can just wait for them to catch up to the slide I'm on. Other than that I don't really have advice on shortening the time it takes to make cards, other than typing faster

Do you have the hierarchical tags add-on? It is seriously the best. I set it up to have a tag for each class, then tags for subsections (like GI, cardio, nervous for anatomy) and then tags under that for each lecture. That way if I want to study a particular lecture, a particular subsection or particular course all I have to do is make a Filtered Deck from that tag and it's off to the races.

For me studying the massive amount of cards I make is really the limiting factor with using Anki, and if all the cards from one course are combined right from the beginning then I rarely can make connections between the cards because they're all lost in a 2000+ card deck. I found that breaking my cram sessions up into "study each lecture" then "study each subsection" then "study the whole course" when studying for midterms/finals was so useful... I got the benefit of making connections between things like you would re-reading or re-writing your notes, then I could test my understanding by combining all of a section together and finding connections between that section's lectures, and then finally right before the exam I would mix everything together and see if my understanding still held true. Worked really really well for me last year, so I'll pass it on to you guys 😉

In case anyone was wondering how much I love Anki... check out how many cards I have from first + second year

Only two days in but yeah, so far making the cards in class has been so much better than what I did before. I basically have my setup the same as you described. I do have the hierarchical tags add on, completely forgot to use it the last two days :smack:
Thanks so much for this post, very helpful!

Anyway I'm already a lecture and a half behind because I was too tired to pay attention this morning, but such is life 🙄
My life is a perpetual case of catch-up, you're in good company Zoo! I don't even get back into town until like 20 hours before my school year starts :dead:

Oh god that's horrible, I usually need a full day or more to recover from traveling

Week one done and I can already tell that 3rd year is going to be wayyyyyyy better than 2nd year. Only sitting in a classroom for half the day and then various labs (if any for that day) in the afternoon. I’ve also been planning pathology externships for 4th year and getting so excited for them!

Are you coming to Washington?

Are you coming to Washington?
Unfortunately no, because I can’t do combined residency programs. I thought about looking at UW’s comparative medicine program because one of the professors here did her residency there, but ultimately I decided to look at other locations.

I will be going to Michigan State, Raleigh-Durham area, and tentatively Davis and Wisconsin though, if anyone is in those areas!
