Class of 2021 . . . how ya doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
P.S. CSU People I am funny and I bake, you should all PM me and be my friend. 😀
She might make you join her cult though....

But the cult is really fun and we have tequila, pringles, and baked goods at our meetings, so it's really nice!

This is a lie. She's the worst.

(Jk she's actually really nice and you should be her friend).

This is either effective recruiting propaganda or the exact opposite.

But they might need assistance

If I don't get accepted, I have 15 more credit hours left before graduation. 5 of those are electives. So since I actually turn 21 in July, I'm gonna use 3 of those elective hours to take the wine tasting class :biglove:

The other classes I'm taking are the Biochemistry capstone, and 2 upper division science classes- probably choosing histology and anatomy (or immuno/ parasitology) so I'm still getting my heavy sciences, Always gotta look on the bright side, right?

If you don't get in, I would totally recommend at least one of the two from histo & anatomy - it'll set you up super well for some of the first year vet classes that throw a lot of people off their game. 😀

Take histo!!! It prepares you for vet school and is really interesting! Although, I may be a little biased due to being a teaching assistant last semester for it. 🙄🙂

Immuno is a great one to take if you can. The majority of my class is really struggling with our vet school immuno but it's mostly been review for me as I took it (with a lab, too---we made our own vaccines against Salmonella and tested them on rats!) back in undergrad. Also, it is just super interesting stuff. Highly recommended.

First off- y'all are amazing.

I'm thinking maybe histo. It's human anatomy, not mammalian anatomy so I'm wondering how relevant it would be for me... But I need to double check.

I'm definitely leaning towards histo! I took a histo short course/ preview in HS, and I really enjoyed it.

Immuno is a great one to take if you can. The majority of my class is really struggling with our vet school immuno but it's all been review for me for the most part as I took it (with a lab, too) back in undergrad. The exposure really helps you wrap your head around some of the more abstract concepts. Also, it is just super interesting stuff. Highly recommended.
I know that immuno is a first year class (at OkState CVM at least) so that would be relevant as well! I'm definitely considering it!

Parasit is legit!!!! Take Parasit!!!!!
I really like parasit! I know it's a big thing at OkState CVM. Too many decisions! 🙁

In summary, take everything cdo!

Basically! I'm leaning towards Histo. On the bright side, if I'm struggling, I do have someone to go to if I'm struggling. 🤣
Histo was pretty fun when I took it during my senior year! If you do have to take it and need anything I still have all of my old notes that I can send your way too.

For me personally, I never took immuno in undergrad and aced the class in vet school, but recognize that may not be a representative experience for a lot of people. I should also add that I had a microbiology class and a cell bio class that had extensive immuno components, so I wasn't going in totally blind.

Ah yes. Cell bio and molecular bio are other options. Or I'll just delay graduation for a semester and take all the sciences haha

I lowkey hated cell bio. It's because I can't deal with tiny subject matter. I'm a big picture kind of person and always felt like that stuff got way too out in the weeds for me, haha.

You're a biochem major though, so you have already demonstrated a thousand fold that you like tiny things more than I do lol

Or you could be a major lazy bum like me and take super easy classes and just float through your last semester😉
I explicitly took either things I needed to graduate or things I thought would be fun during my last semester. The problem is the things I thought would be fun were all stupidly hard classes lol. I wasn't as nice to myself during my senior year as I could have been.

I like the tiny things. Hahaha but most importantly, I like how the tiny things relate to the big things. (I was in the middle of writing out why like the glycolysis cycle is so cool and important but then I had to stop myself from nerding out) but still. I love it.

Floating is cool but you know what's cooler? Metabolism. Immunology. Histology. VIRUSES. Rare genetic disorders that come from metabolic disorders! :biglove:

Last semester sucked. This semester one of the sophomores in the pre-vet club saw me walk in the class on the first day and asked me if I was TA-ing the class😛 Nope. Literally just taking credits to graduate...lol

I'm taking easy classes and working a crap ton. I was so burnt out by the end of last semester that I think, for me, it was needed.

This semester I'm taking physics 2 and for the lab, I got paired with a super eager/ hopeful freshman who kept asking me questions about being a senior/ applying to vet school. I had to find a delicate balance between honesty and not making this girl drop out now.

Me.

Although, actually 2 of the 3 classes I took in my last semester were actually necessary requirements for me to graduate. The fact that they were easy was just a bonus.
But for the other class... I was like "Hmm, what sounds interesting that I can take online?" I was only half time that semester too so it was beautiful.

Totally agree with the burnout. I think I was burning out three times as hard too because I was in my fifth semester as an RA, was president of the Pre-Vet club at the time (and had been an officer for three years), was working, and was usually taking 15+ credits a semester. I survived in undergrad on the notion that immense pressure creates diamonds, I guess. 😛

I have two online classes this semester lol...then a production class and an upper level physiology class. Working at the clinic three days a week. Best semester ever. I don't have any major requirements or prerequisites, so I just need credits

I'm one of the crazies who decided to finish undergrad in three years. I literally took Ochem II, Biochem, Physics II, and my capstone all at the same time while working at the clinic and working in the lab. So nice to be done with all that crap and have gotten in somewhere.

"Senior year sucks. Applying to vet school sucks. Rejection sucks. Not sleeping at night sucks. Basically just drop out now. You're probably gonna change your mind anyway. Save you some time"

You nailed it.

"Senior year is great. Applying to vet school is fantastic. Rejection is the best feeling ever. Not sleeping at night is good for your health. None of this is true but, you're not gonna change your mind anyway."

Ftfy

I'm one of those crazies too, but I decided that if I didn't, I would take an extra semester. It'll be reaaaaaally nice if OkState gives me a chance. It's February 12th today. Last year, they found out on February 23rd. So it's coming really really soon.

Y'all did senior year wrong. I spent half taking anything offered in English in Finland and the other half pulling late shifts at an er and blowing off classes because I got accepted and only needed Cs. Twas fantastic.

Finland. That's sweet.

ALL MY DIGITS ARE CROSSED

After getting into my dream school last week..... all my motivation has gone out the window lol..... and I have 3 exams this week (biochemistry, Physics II, animal breeding):arghh: but at least the pressure is off now. How have others handled this and what have you done the summer before vet school? Planning on working and saving some more money. Maybe working in an influenza lab and back home at a mouse embryology company... and starting to build on some lab animal experiences.

Some of us weren't accepted yet and needed those As. 😛

This is where discipline has to take over for motivation imo. The motivation is gone but now you have to have the drive and self-discipline to just get things done anyway. It's hard and takes some balancing to do right. It may take you a few weeks or a month to get at least sort of back into the "screw this! But also don't screw this I gotta pass" groove. I had a really hard time with the switch and got drunk a lot when I did homework lol (don't do that).

As for the summer before vet school, make some money, have some fun, do what you gotta do without trying to learn vet school crap early. I worked at animal control because I love it, and then I moved up here with enough time to let myself get settled before classes started (I moved in July, but part of that was residency stuff too). I took some online summer classes, but that was part of my MPH program.

I went swimming, I barbecued, I went to the movies, I hung out with friends, I swam in the lake, I watched fireworks, I watched TV and baked and read and all of the other good stuff you're supposed to do over the summer. Do that kind of stuff, you won't regret it.

I spent spring of senior year with my lowest course load ever taking random easy classes that sounded interesting, never studied and had more fun than the rest of undergrad. No way was I taking extra upper level science for funsies haha

Me right now. Taking cell bio(prereq but maybe not anymore), animal behavior, and animal products. The later two I need to graduate. No stress. Esp with both tests being Wednesday and back to back
