Class of 2021 . . . how ya doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm pretty excited about one of my externship that I've scheduled because it's actually an ER rotation which I want to get more experience in but it's also a surgery externship it's kind of a meld and it's perfect. The ER shifts are from 6 p.m. to midnight and they said I could come during the day for surgery anytime I wanted. It's perfect! Direct contrast to give me clarity lol

But seriously though, we have the largest small animal caseload in the country; it's a worthwhile place to learn things even if it was possible to be infected with a non-existent accent within 2 weeks...

What are you going to do with us!!!
also undecided!!! something ER probably or Surgery or ICU or something.
Hello everyone.

Been a wild few years and I'm stressing about our 1st day capstone exam tomorrow, but I'm starting 3rd year 🙂
omg! You’re back! Good luck on your exam tomorrow- we missed you around here!

Welcome back!!!! 😀 2021 is lucky to have you!!!!

Do you have dates yet? We have a lot of construction goin on, so I can let you know what services to avoid when so you don't have to deal with the construction.

For externships next summer what is a good way on trying to calculate how much it will cost?

Determine location, search local housing options (either through the externship or Airbnb/etc), food budget, any additional materials you need for said externship.

Don't forget travel costs - gas/airline etc. if not close.

If you happen to live near a SDNer you might be able to politely ask if you can sleep on an air mattress on their floor and pitch in money for utilities.

I mean, that’s what I’m about to ask with one of mine if it ends up happening :ninja:

I have hosted multiple SDNers and all of them are still alive!

Week 1 of school done. Was feeling a bit nervous but better now... as long as I can plan things as far as studying I should be fine! Going to a national lab animal conference in Denver to present a poster during October. Starting to solidify my externships and off campus blocks then hope everything goes smoothly with my school approving them and the dates. Overall I really like my lectures and find them easy to listen and pay attention to!! Truly look forward to going to school.
Hey there, you will have to message me where your poster is at AALAS so I can come look at it 😀

10/10 would let you sleep on my floor or couch. You don’t even have to bring your own air mattress

Still completely terrified of live animal surgery and feeling like its creeping up fast. Had intro surgery lab today so it was pretty much just all review of stuff we did last semester in addition to some "here is where you find xyz".

You’re gonna rock it<3

You will do great!

As one of the attendings said when I did my cat spays: "this is the best time and place for things to go wrong because you have a whole hospital of board certified doctors to come running if there is an issue, and we all like a little excitement from time to time"

On that note...ran my first anesthesia on a dog OVH from start to finish today (+ placed catheter, intubated, etc)!

It all went so well, I feel like someone must have hired this dog in advance as a confidence-building plant -- probably by promising her a bajillion cookies to be a perfect demo model for the day.

Also she's super DUPER cute and is up for adoption...

seriously though, nicest/least crazytown husky I have ever met.

Halp.

I can't get a husky, one of my cats hates dogs and I hate running

And I have no fence

And no time.

...I might need help reiterating these things between now & tomorrow when she is picked up by the rescue peeps because I kinda love this dog haha

I think it’s normal to be scared. Then you either relax and love it, or relax and realize surgery is not for you. Either way, it gets better with practice.

Oh good, because a lot of the time it feels like none of my classmates are scared and I'm the only one freaked out (which I'm sure is not true, but definitely feels that way a lot)

I was terrified. Then I found out that surgery really isn't for me. And now I'm getting terrified again

I was a basket case and will be again in November when I do my dog spays. You are not alone.

I help run some of the student spay labs where I'm at. Don't worry, everyone is terrified 🙂 Everyone is there to help you succeed, and we would rather you asked a million questions than just blazed through on your own and made a mistake. Trust me, I've seen it both ways.

I remember feeling the exact same way. Like everyone is SO excited to finally start surgery and I was like oh crap...I felt similarly fourth year rotations too and I never took an additional surgery elective for spay/neuter because I was going to be a lab animal vet! I wish I had, even just for the surgery confidence. I now love surgery but when I see a spay in the schedule I still have to remind myself to chill 😉

I knew posting something about my perfect patient yesterday would come back to bite me. And today it almost did, in the form of a demon dog who was absurdly difficult for every.single.step. of her anesthesia & surgery.

Like, the absolute worst for alllll the things.

But she is alive and has been trying desperately to get her cone off for 2 hours, so I think she's gonna make it haha

I want to meet your cats sometime! You inspired me to teach paw tricks to my cat, and now shake is his favorite

As part of the agreement when I broke up with him, my ex took two of the cats including the Bengal and I kept the cat who would die without me and of course my dog who was never really in question but I felt guilty because my ex helped pay for him.
