Class of 2021 . . . how ya doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Luckily it is a small percentage of points, so you don't have to stress too hard about it. Was one of my lowest percentages for sure and I still passed comfortably. haha
Ideally I was planning to save those points for chickens.

Currently watching Babe to remind myself that I typically feel ok about pigs as creatures. It's working!

Had to set up a meeting with the assitant dean and advisor. It went well! I'm wanting to do a combined PhD/residency after school and wanted to do the nonpractice track at our school (had to get special permission). It's similar to mixed animal so I still get experience with both large and small, but get a few more extra blocks to go off campus. However, there are only so many off campus blocks for the class (total of 60 for 83 students). I'm hoping I get the 3 I'm applying for. I feel like I should be able to since I'm doing nonpractice track and the fact that we don't even have a lab animal rotation for our 4th year so literally no comparable experience I could take. Hoping for the best and hoping this semester flies!

Wait your school only has a certain amount of off campus blocks total for the whole class???

Everyone gets 6 weeks of an externship! But for me wanting to match to a residency it's pretty important to try and visit as may places as possible. I'm visiting 3 places during my externship.

To clarify better, everyone gets 6 weeks. Then there is a max amount of off campus blocks that you can apply for (60) for the entire class. I don't think everyone will apply for one but then there are people like me who are applying to mutliple.

OH that’s so much better

Yeah lol and people still don't really like the system we have but it is what it is. I know my application will be pretty competitive due to my career goals kinda depending on these off campus experiences and considering we don't have any lab animal type experiences that I can do on campus.

Faculty reactions to me repeating have been an interesting mix. Some are very supportive and encouraging. Many are ignoring the situation entirely. And the odd one, though they obviously won't say it, are looking at me like they disapprove of me being back. I know they waived a rule to let me repeat, so I guess I know who was for and who was against that decision.... Time to prove the last group wrong!

You got this squeaks!!!

Starting to freak out about externships --> internships --> residencies.

Specifically, freaking out that I still have zero research experience and didn't do anything this summer -- which at the time was nice but now feels like a huge wasted opportunity. AND I am not doing a selective this fall, which is kind of like a stay-at-home externship.

Aaahhhh what was I thinking

Everything works out how it’s supposed to. And taking the summer to do things beyond vet med sounds like good self care to me. I didn’t take the summer off and all I can think about is how badly I could use a vacation. Plus, you’ll have the rest of your life to work.

What’s you’re specialty interest...not too late to approach a professor about being involved with a project!

Yup. I was involved with a bunch of random stuff this summer and if anything I feel like my professional goals and understanding of what I want to do when I graduate have slid backwards precipitously. Also I really need/want a break now and won't get one for a pretty long time. Wish I was more comfortable taking space for myself when I had opportunities to

We just got deadlines for externship applications and they're in 2 weeks. Cool this is literally the first time the school has even mentioned externships to us at all. I thought I was being crazy booking all these externships over the summer but turns out that's what we were supposed to be doing without them even telling us. There are so many people who have exactly two weeks to figure out externships for forth year. This is bull****

That's nuts! Good thing you were proactive!

I mean it's still a **** show because I haven't heard back from two externships if I got them or not. So I'll have to make changes (likely) after the fact which is a giant pain in the ass and they only give you three changes. Hope it works out.

Yeah, yikes, that sounds like a potential disaster! Fingers crossed that your plan doesn't implode!

Holy crap. Imagine if people in your class are like me and haven't applied to any yet...

Talk about a scramble on top of all the regular school stuff. Hope you hear back from them soon Coop!

Finally can view my schedule. Still hoping to make a few changes (mostly shoving externships in place of things that I don't want) but I'm mostly happy with it. 😀

We never know when we will see ours -_-

That is literally at least a third of the class, I don't even want to think about it

I won't hear back from other institutions if I have the externship until February at the earliest, they have to place all their students first. The other I am waiting on their 2021 calendar to be released which likely won't be until mid-October. So I'll submit my application for externships that I don't know I have :heckyeah:

Hope everything works out well - sending good thoughts to you (and to everyone else who is applying for externships)!

That would have been awful for me since I vehemently did not want to take what they had put me in for the first rotation and I would imagine 3 day notice doesn't allow for changes?

That's the thing. Our 4th year scheduling was taken over by our old AV dude a few years back, so he's still figuring all this out. We can submit whatever changes whenever we want, there's just no guarantee we'll get those. I know there are current 4th years still changing schedules for everything except the last block (but that's a different matter entirely).

It's vaguely a ****show. Knowing this, I got all my stuff scheduled over the summer and told scheduling that this is all confirmed and to work around it. I did bribe him with small animal ER over christmas.

We won’t get ours until December at the latest... Or if it’s like last year, March.

y’all are 2.5 +1.5 though, right?

If they require flights do them back to back to save money, other wise it's up to you

No flights required. They're both in Michigan, just both an hour and a half away (in different directions) which is further than I want to commute unless I absolutely have to so I'm not planning on staying at home.

Trying to decide if I want to do two externships in a row or put some space between them and I almost wish it wasn't my choice because deciding is hard.
I might say space them out. Starting a new rotation is tough as it is, having to learn another place/people is just an added toughness. Plus, presumably your externship are in topics you’re most interested in and it might be nice to space out the more interesting stuff with the less desirable ones. Just my two cents 🙂

I wonder if I would like renal physiology more if we had a different professor. We've had the same person teaching it for multiple years now, and I wish they would change it up. She's clearly very smart & knowledgeable and is apparently super nice on clinics/1:1, but her lectures...y i k e s .

Our midterm is this Friday. I backed way off on a lot of activities after last year hit me so hard. I'm just starting to feel the low key panic coming on. I've always been way on the low end of my classes (not upsetting in of itself). After repeating and then dealing with everything last year, I just want this test to go well; instill some new confidence into my vet school life.

I believe in you bats, you can do this

I was applying for a scholarship today and got to the part where they ask you GPA and I was like ok it's not great but here you go and then they asked for my class rank and I just exited the application. Because lol if they're considering that for who to give money to why bother?

I feel that! Pretty sure I'm literally at the bottom of my class (remember that we have really small classes) after failing my year, and still hoping to specialize somehow....
