Class of 2021 . . . how ya doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If we have externships already schedule, we get block the scheduler from filling that time slot so we can do it. Otherwise, we have to wait til we get our schedule and fill the empty blocks with something else. The reserved blocks are also used for things like NAVLE, weddings etc.
That sounds lame, sorry for your aggravation

Things I have learned this semester...

1. I am not a surgeon
2. I hate diseased eyeballs
3. No seriously, I hate diseased eyeballs. Would prefer basically any other organ.
4. Fresh cadavers smell bad
5. Yes, my anxiety can, in fact, get worse
Lol I did an enucleation in a cadaver surgery lab, got it out, and was immediately like "Oh my god this needs to be sutured shut right now so I never have to see this eye socket again, it's so horrifying"

Oh hey I, too, did an enucleation in surgery today. The eyeball got closed and on the bright side my cadaver got some LOVELY cheek bone lines from the fact that I accidentally took out too much skin and had to undermine the skin a little and made it a little tight.

Also suture smaller than 5-0 should be illegal. We had to use 6-0 today with the magnifying goggles and I still have a headache from them

My scrambled brain lasted just long enough for me to write my food animal med/surg midterm this morning. Then I celebrated by coming home and removing the suture the doc missed when she was taking them out of my forehead. (in her defense, I heal so fast the skin had grown over them) Not that they held anything together anyways.... Not a true dehiscence, just a crappy suture job! No idea what happened the rest of the day, since I then took my dizzy self back to bed.

Bless the prof who gave us a take-home, open-book midterm with a two week window to submit it!!
(sincerely, a student who can't think for very long right now)

I am very tired. I was looking back at some of this thread, and I am much more cynical and much more tired than I was as a wittle first year. Last year I leeched enthusiasm from the first years, and I tried to do that again this year, but it’s not enough.

Starting to sink in that people are going to expect me to have answers and it scares the hell out of me.
They expect you to try to have answers
Like sure if you never have correct answers you're probably not gonna get an A on the rotation unless they're super nice, but you'll pass as long as you're trying (and when you don't know something, look it up and make sure you know it the next day), you have a good attitude, and you do your work.

Don't be scared!

Everyone here has a lot to offer, and we'll be with our friends as we trying to puzzle things out as a group, surrounded by cool animals and people who care about them. What is more fun and exciting than that?

I'm starting to feel like we're building up to why I came to vet school in the first place, and I am honestly looking forward to it so much.

I've only got 12 weeks until clinics and uh... yeah, feeling hopelessly inadequate.

And I get to start with emergency. Yay?

Of course, first I have to pass this semester which my anxiety keeps trying to convince me that I won't do even though things are going fine so far (not great mind you, but fine).

I am thinking about the real world in a year and a half. Most of our professors have at some point commented on how little we seem to recall from third year to fourth year, so I am not really worried about clinics.

Oh, don't worry about that yet! Jeez that's so far away and you have a whole year of hands on, practical learning before you get there. And then that first year out in practice is a huge learning curve itself. You definitely won't know all the answers all the time of course. Lots of resources to lean on to help you though.

My first year out in practice I learned more than all of vet school combined. And I’m still learning every day. Like WZ says, the important part is NOT knowing it all, which is what most people think is needed to be good in clinics or in practice. The key is having the interest, care and understanding of resources to figure it out. Yesterday I did joint taps for the first time since our cadaver wet lab in vet school. I read my book, I looked on VIN, and then I did it and it went great. Don’t be paralyzed by fear of not having every random fact or procedure memorized. The “routine” knowledge will come to you with time, which everyone expects and understands 🙂

Starting to feel a bit exhausted... will be traveling for the AALAS conference tomorrow! Super excited about that but am coming back to taking a Swine exam, equine exam, diagnostic imaging final, and a therio quiz.... we had two exams this past week and two the week before that... can October just be over please.

I want my rotation schedule back, not just because I want to schedule externships, but also because I want to be able to fill in my signature here on SDN with an up to date list of everything I’m doing

it’s the little things, right?
Lol we're not getting our rotation schedule until AT LEAST Februrary. At least we can schedule rotations without it.

Very dense exam coming up and my little dog-child has been in intensive care for almost a week extremely neutropenic with an albumin of 1. Thankfully I have insurance but my brain has just about quit.
Poor baby, I’m sorry to hear about that... have they been able to figured out a cause?

We received our elective schedule for next semester. All of the small animal stuff is Monday afternoon and the rest of the week will be pretty easy. Kind of looking forward to it. Still waiting for our rotation schedules though.

And I'm waiting for yours with bated breath to see if we can make something match up again for me to come down there. I'm praying it comes out before our draft so I can plan a vacation block around it.

After much debate I've decided that I am going to CanWest on Sunday, even though I'm not up to a full day of classes yet. It's going to be a pain since I'm not up to an hour and a half highway drive each way, so I'm going to have to park at the airport and take the shuttle to the hotel. It's not like I have to retain everything for an exam so it'll be easier on my brain than school, and if I need to I can always leave early. Or that's what I'm telling myself....

I have my schedule but I have like 2-3 rotations I still have to fill and I don't know what I want to doooo. (But I can't really travel so that cuts down my options).
Hey, I'm around if you ever want someone to bounce ideas off of. I can also help later on if you've got questions about any of the online systems. Having ECC first is a good way to just drive right into it!

You're never in a vacuum or by yourself out here. Let me know if there's ever anything I can help with.

My empty spots aren't until the fall so I've kind of just been half ignoring them for now. Was going to email whoever it is that has the big list of externships and see what's around within reasonable commuting distance but I know a lot of my classmates are still scrambling on spring stuff so I figured my things can wait.

I was also considering repeating a rotation (like IM maybe) to fill a space but I dont know if I should and they wont let me schedule a repeat right now anyways.

ECC is my first rotation because it was kinda my only option but I feel like I'm gonna be very lost. Extra lost, maybe. At what point do I finally feel ready for clinics? When I'm in the middle of them? 😛

I felt really ready for clinics during like spring 6 or summer 1, when I was really hitting my stride. Depending on what you want to do as an adult, there's different places to look. The master list thing is on d2l somewhere, or you can set something up yourself by contacting clinics directly. I got one of my recent externships by using the swine vet association to find a place willing and able to host me. Doing in hospital rotations as a "special problems" rotation is definitely an option. I wouldnt recommend IM though unless you really don't like yourself.

So as I said in the rave thread, I made it to the conference yesterday. I opted to only go the one day because I've missed so much school lately and I also wasn't sure what my brain would be up to. But there was a nutrition track yesterday and since I hadn't met the speaker and she's doing literally what I want to do for a living (referral private practice) I wanted the chance to reach out to her. I'm usually not bad at networking.

We need to discuss details, but I might tentatively have a private practice nutrition externship for next year....

They just extended the deadline for externship paperwork from mid-Nov to mid-Jan, making arranging things just a little bit more... possible.
