Class of 2021 . . . how ya doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have a progressive hereditary tremor that I can't properly medicate... beta blockers vs asthma or barbiturates vs level of consciousness are the two accepted options) and I can't wait to get one!

Sorry to mention if you've tried it already. I also have a progressive hereditary tremor. I started taking CBD with terpenes about 6 months ago after my father's Mayo Clinic Drs recommended it and it's leveled my hands out (his too), evidently it works really well for some people but hasn't been well studied.

Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately CBD has been shown to interact with some other meds I'm on, and what they do for me is more important than stopping my hands from shaking. Sorry to hear that you're dealing with one too, and I'm glad you've found something that works! I wish something medical in my life could be that easy....

This body's a lemon. A classmate says that it just can't keep up with my fighting spirit after everything. I'll take the compliment... I guess something had to be the weak link... but I still want a refund. Just gotta find my receipt....

Good news! The air is dangerous to breath but don't worry, classes will continue on schedule. They did this last year too. They'll change their mind eight times and both cancel and demand we show up in different emails within hours of each other.

Well that sounds like a fun game.... :/

So so fun. Last year the school shut down and we still had class 😕

I didn't even realize that was legal beagle!!!

During our freeze day last year, the chancellor had canceled classes campus wide, so we were told that it was mandatory for the vet school to close too. The 4th and 2nd years (who were on their clinical rotations) were told they had the day off for free with no consequences, but were allowed to volunteer to come in.

Haha it wasn't, the chancellor closed the school and the vet school sent out an email that while undergrad was cancelled, vet school was NOT. They then got a huge backlash and cancelled classes... after we were already in class for the day.

The professors were amazing and kept coming in to lecture to empty classrooms so we could have the recordings and not fall behind. They let us have take home exams and were super accommodating. Last year was the first year they had to close the school due to dangerous air quality and they were not prepared. Hopefully, they've learned for this year and it won't be such a mess.

Sounds like the profs were really on your side with it all, that's awesome! Is it getting any easier to breathe over there?

Today was good, but we also just had a huge windstorm that downed several trees so that had something to do with it. We'll see how it goes the rest of the week!
Oh, that sounds like... fun? I have a dear friend not terribly far from Davis and in the outage zone who needs a ventilator part time. I've been following developments down there pretty closely!

Surgery is going well so far. I think I'm the only one happy under all the layers and surgery lights though, since I'm basically a tropical lizard and we've had an ongoing snowstorm all week
Excessive heat is my dream (not kidding). Surgery is not.

Sweat was literally dripping down my legs yesterday during surgery, so gross. I usually get cold but I would happily keep the OR at like 50 if we could

I already did my 6 surgeries last year. Still hate it, and it still massively stresses me out! So now I get to do them again, in addition to whatever fourth year brings. I've already talked to a few clinics about opportunities for surgery-free positions (this isn't just me being difficult, I have a progressive hereditary tremor that I can't properly medicate... beta blockers vs asthma or barbiturates vs level of consciousness are the two accepted options) and I can't wait to get one!

keep looking! There are plenty of multi doctor practices out there where they have limited surgery days for too many doctors eager to cut!Or one where there are doctors vying for a second surgery day. Honestly you may very well make more money doing no surgeries...

I have no idea why I'm so comfortable even with all the layers and in a sweltering room with twenty five other people in it. We were doing surgery for four hours today and to be honest I happily would have accepted a heat lamp on top of everything else.

Like you said, you’re a reptile, no further explanation necessary 🙂

I'm actually hoping to board certify in nutrition. I love it, the lack of surgery is just a bonus. Just gotta get there....

You are my people!

Based on this year's dates my son and I are going to graduate in the same week. Him from high school and me from vet school. Praying it's not the same day... our schools are in different cities so I don't know how my husband and parents would choose, plus I want to be there for his!

Does his high school have a typical day they do graduation on? For instance, my high school only had graduations on Sunday, so I knew exactly what date it would be.

I honestly didn't pay attention last year, but this year his school's is the Thursday AND Friday. Ceremony one day and banquet the other. Our convocation is over the course of a week, and I'm not sure if each faculty is on the same day each year or if it's a little more random than that. Plus the banquet may or may not be on the same day. I've worked so hard for this... I want to walk that stage!

Testing out the new signature. Now that I have some dates, I can try and set up my externships. Kind of exciting!

I scheduled my externships and we submitted preference dates for rotations but we won’t have our schedule until later this month...I can’t believe we’re less than 6 mo. out until clinics. #notready

Are you tracking small animal? I've heard good things about the shelter rotation in Asheville for getting in surgery experience. And I did the one at ARL, which got me a lot of surgeries but was otherwise blah.

I am tracking small. I tried for the ARL, but didn't get it even though I had it number 1. Honestly, I am not sure if I am going to bother with another round of shelter medicine. I'll get plenty of surgery at work. I am going to mostly be looking for ECC type opportunities since that is what I am going into.

How do people get their schedules so early? I won't have mine until February!
Is it February for sure this year instead of March? That could increase the chances of it working out for me!

They told us February, but I don't know it'll be on time
Fair. Our draft dates haven't been announced yet, but it's usually in February or early March. If I know the open blocks at Davis before draft I can aim for a vacation block instead of just leaving it up to blind dumb luck like last year.

we won’t have finalized schedules (trading and such) until end of December...but idk Feb seems so far out...when do you guys start clinics?

I'm excited to get ours soon, but our deadline to submit our rankings/tell our coordinator about pre-scheduled externships that we have isn't until the beginning of December. She's having surgery this month so my guess is we won't know schedules until probably January at the earliest

Honestly I don't think they'll have open blocks until March at the latest. There's always a period of shift between February and March of finalizing schedules of the students here. We submit our changes then if we got the externships we wanted or want to switch rotation or something. Either way I doubt they'll be open sooner this year.

Guess it'll have to be dumb luck again then. She gave me the list of blocks they're opening so I can at least try to gamble a bit better though.

In theory, we're supposed to have our full schedule by Thanksgiving break. It would be the earliest a third year class would have it, so I'm not holding my breath

Got approved for all of my off campus blocks!!!! I'm so excited! I will be spending a total of 15 weeks doing lab animal things! I believe we set preferences for blocks in January and will find out exact order in February. Excited to finish this semester and get closer to finishing!

We have a spay tomorrow, so I have changed from assistant to floater

Anxiously waiting to find out whether I have a spay or a neuter tomorrow (assuming no changes between tonight and tomorrow). I don't have patience.

It's a neuter. I'm glad about this because it will take less time.

(I originally wanted a spay and then on our first surgery day I saw how much longer those took and was like please no, it's already a really long day as it is)

All you folks scheduling your externships a year or more out is crazy to me. I don't even have anything confirmed for my entire spring semester yet 🤣

Once I hear back from the avma public policy thing in a few weeks I might actually try to at least set other things up

I didnt want to have to deal with it. Lol. If we get our official schedules over the next few weeks, I'll be able to confirm it and just be done. No more worries about fourth year for another 20.5 weeks.

Here you schedule your externships first and they block it off when we draft for the rest of our rotations so nothing can conflict. Externship paperwork deadline is mid-January and draft dates aren't announced yet.

Our externship deadline was Oct 4th and most of us don't have dates set up yet, but we guessed and will have to change the schedule later. Unfortunately, they didn't give us a great heads up (2weeks) about when the deadline was, so more than half the class either doesn't have externships or only has one or two. It's times like this I'm grateful I'm neurotic and planned out all my externships before being given any information. Otherwise, I'd be screwed.

Also, as a fun aside: I have to get things scheduled more than a year in advance. I tried to schedule an externship in freaking June, and they said they were full through 2020! I'm hoping to land a 2021 date when they open their calendar but holy cow, that's ridiculous.
