Class of 2021 . . . how ya doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Back from my social media self-isolation to study for finals.

1) white coat and OSCE testing cancelled
2) milestone exam mysteriously not yet cancelled
3) our first block of clinics (starting March 30) has been changed to either off campus rotation (if already previously scheduled) or vacation
4) if we dont have to go back for milestone testing, I'm not back in Champaign until june 6. All I packed was spring break clothes and stuff

I know this isn't funny but I giggled at the sarcasm lol

Leave it to a vet school to cancel everything except a soul crushing exam, because really, are they even a vet school anymore if there aren't any tests?

I just want to know!!! Lol. If I don't have to be back in Champaign for this test, I don't want to buy those plane tickets

All of our lectures have moved online, with tracked attendance for Summit Day (which is whole-school mandatory). We get Monday off while they get the technology figured out. They're also trying to figure out how to "re-schedule/modify/cancel" labs, and our large animal surgery lab for this week is cancelled. That, I did not expect! No word on next week's part 2 yet. No idea what they're going to do about the OSCE resit that was supposed to run at the end of next month either, or the first and second year OSCEs that were supposed to run a few weeks before that. They keep telling us to watch our email for updates, and they're not disappointing on that front - yesterday afternoon there was a stretch where we averaged an email every 6 minutes. I came home for the weekend for a belated birthday with my family, but with all the changes I don't have to go back for at least a week. Good thing I anticipated this might happen and packed extra! Our class has started referring to it as coronacation.

Yeah, we're supposed to have our hell test in May. School is only cancelled through mid-April (with a revisit of whether to extend at that time) so I think they're just hoping they won't have to think about it and they can just set up hell test with no interruptions

Before COVID-19, I reached out to Cornell to see about doing a cardiology rotation there (unfortunately it’d have to be in mid June) since our cardio department is shutting down bc our only cardiologist is leaving.

They got back to me today to basically say like “there’s an open spot but we’ve cancelled all externs until May soooooo we can book you but you might get cancelled”

This is trivial but...got a cute new cat scrub cap...stupid pandemic mean no OR time so I can’t wear it. Boo.

Classes got canceled a week ago today and I’m sorta losing my mind but also trying to appreciate the little things. Trying. Definitely so much I took for granted.

Getting really tired of them taking away rotations or just not having clinicians for neurology or exotics.

Same. Getting real tired of having no info in general. I still have 3 weeks of "break" starting Sunday. There's a lot I could be doing with my time that I can't figure out until we have an update from the school. :/

Pics or it didn't happen

Eventually, I have to work my way upstairs so I can collect my dirty laundry and have more optimal loungewear for couch-school. I also need to clear my table off so I can relocate to the dining room and have a nicer backdrop if I ever have to turn the camera on in Zoom. It’s a brave new world.

Waiting for the OSCE result that'll decide whether I'm still a vet student. The second and third years had their last one cancelled, but COVID came to our neck of the woods a week too late for us. They've changed the grading so most people should pass, but I'm not going to assume until it's in my inbox - I thought I'd passed the last one fine and I had not....

Apparently we should know by noon.

Rooting so damn hard for you, friend!

PM me if you need; you know I’ve been there.

How are everyone's classes handling the changes your school is putting in place?

Supposed to start clinics a month from today

We're supposed to start Monday and my class is.... unsatisfied with the changes made. So it made me curious on how other classes are handling things

I'm pretty sure everyone in my class is a mess internally, but I think everyone is trying to squash it externally and stay positive because there's literally nothing we can do about it.

Also, on a conference call today, our school admin folks gave off the sense that they have been repeatedly run over by a proverbial truck. So I'm not even sure we have the worst "side" of this situation tbh.

ill let you know when they tell us more...how are they doing if for you guys?

They have moved 2/4 of our off blocks to our A and B blocks, and our anesthesia/internal med block was moved to our C block and is being waived. We received a survey today asking to rank our off blocks, directed electives, and free electives in the order of least to most important. We will automatically lose the two least important off blocks since those are being used started Monday. The rest of the rankings are just in case things go beyond May 11 (our projected start date in the hospital).

I hope they do something similar where they offer us a choice in what we lose vs. just cutting things. At this point I have no idea what they’ll do. I think I’ll be less stressed when I know what the plan is.

A segment of my class is putting together a proposal on alternatives so we don't lose anything of campus. I'm not sure how successful it will be since the provost is considering closing summer off.

Our presidents were meeting with the admin today. So far we've lost six weeks of clinics. They're contemplating letting us do them virtually but the schedule is a giant mess so not sure how that's gonna work.

Welp I just got an invitation to internal medicine online conference so I guess this is happening 🙁

honestly I’m going to be really frustrated if they try to do online stuff, it just seems like a waste of my time and not actually beneficial to learning.

I'm just really annoyed because they kinda screwed over only half the class. If you're in section 2 (I'm not) then the next two weeks you have business and then clin path just online. If you're in section 1 you have a blank week, then a week of clin path, then two weeks of clinics then another blank week and a week of business. WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS??

it’s an absolute mess. Did they end up redoing your whole schedule? Or how did they factor this online stuff in?

So far they haven't said anything about it. They're focusing on fourth years first, which is fair, I guess I don't trust them to not screw us over.

our fourth years are essentially done other than a scattered few needing to do some online stuff

I'm still technically on our curriculum committee so was in on a meeting on wednesday and...yikes. I'm not sure some of our admins have gotten any sleep in weeks.

I believe it. Same with ours

Welcome to hell

But actually, as much as this sucks (and it does suck), I have been impressed so far with how they've transitioned us to online learning for internal med. Like yeah, some things you're definitely going to lose out on - I don't get to do physical exams on these patients, I don't get to practice procedures, I'm less involved in the clinical decision making because I'm not actually there. But they are still having us take cases that are being seen, call owners for histories, present them in rounds, do our problem lists and SOAPs and as much as they can have us present our plans. Caseload is much much lower than it normally would be, so they've given us some practice cases (real ones from the past) to work up too. They did a live feed of a bone marrow aspirate and biopsy for us today 🙂

I can't remember if your hospital is fully closed or if they're still seeing urgent/emergent things, but if they are hopefully they do some of that for you guys too.

Thank you! Yes we're open for emergency/urgent cases. My roommate who works as an ER relief vet says that Davis cases may actually be increasing in referrals since everywhere else is also reducing services so if something actually comes up they send them to Davis. Who knows?

I feel like this is a really great way to cope with the situation the best they can...but also I feel like I would get more from it if I actually had experience on clinics to begin with. The start of starting like this sounds difficult...but then I guess its all just trial by fire to begin with.

Our c/o 2021 is supposed to start clinics May 11th, and as far as I know that's still the plan. I feel bad that they don't get a white coat ceremony, but overall it sounds like the relatively late clinics start date might work in their favor, although any early externships are probably still cancelled. Starting off clinics with the reduced caseload and no face to face client communication might actually make things easier, lol. But who knows, things could change a lot by May. Hang in there, everyone! ❤

I think this is what my class is missing. They're comparing us to a lot of other school's 4th years; but they're 4th years that are graduating, not new 4th years.
