Class of 2022...how you doin'?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
...that gut phys exam was likely the worst I've had/done in vet school so far

I couldn't finish filling out every short-answer question in time (and neither did a majority of the class! we were literally forced to finish by the next lecture starting), so I felt like I wanted to cry after turning it in, and I actually witnessed at least one person doing so. But now that several hours have passed and all I hear is classmates talking about how they also had to leave blanks, I'm feeling more like Johnnaboo

I’m pretty sure the anatomy practical I have today has more info than the entirety of anatomy 1. Can’t wait.

I use outside resources to study for nearly all my classes. It helps me understand the material better. If someone finds a really good one, they usually share it with friends, and it makes it way around the class.

I’m not sure how using study resources is dishonest just because someone doesn’t broadcast it to the whole class.

I was intentionally vague. It is not just an outside studying resource. I use those all the time. This is different.

If it’s actually academic dishonesty then report it rather than vaguely ranting about it online.
I am unsure if it classifies or not. I'll just remove my post.

It’s either using an allowed resource and just being a dick and not sharing it with the class or it’s academic dishonesty by using a resource not allowed. It cannot be both.
I am saying I don't know. Not everything is black and white.

Well then I'd think the best thing you could do would be to ask friends/other classmates/whoever you're willing to share what the resource is with to see what they think as far as whether or not it seems like academic misconduct. You could also approach the professor and see if it is something they are comfortable with you using. If it isn't an issue, then cool, you now know what the resource is and can use it to, and there was much rejoicing.

But if, as you say, by using this resource they are not having to actually study, it sounds to me like it's in the academic dishonest territory. No good resource should mean that you don't have to study at all.

I discussed it with a friend. and she said "so they're basically cheating"

I will figure out someone higher up to discuss it with.

I studied for a midterm 2 weeks ago by studying for literally 1 hour. ONE HOUR. Because that’s all I could manage without ripping my hair out.
It's ok. One of my best friends literally said to me Sunday that school is painful. Like physically and mentally painful. I can tell she's not feeling her normal self, but she keeps checking in so that's good. I feel for her though-it's been a really rough semester for her in particular.

I'm sorry everybody. 🙁 Vet school is an exhausting marathon and it's okay to be overwhelmed. If it's hitting really hard it might be a good idea to intentionally take some time to do something that vet school took away from you (for me it was reading for fun). I promise vet school will still be there when you get back and you're not going to disastrously fall behind if you take some time to rejuvenate yourself.

And... you're not going to rejuvenate yourself in a night. So it's okay to do something and not feel that much better after it. Try to go through those motions a lot - doing it repeatedly makes it easier.

I'm bad at taking care of myself and somebody once told me to take care of myself in the rule of 3s - something simple for myself at least every 3 days, something harder for myself at least every 3 weeks, and something huge for myself at least every 3 months.

Doesn't matter what it is. My huge things tend to be camping trips or events like baseball games or musicals. Harder things are things like movies, drawing or writing, decluttering, going to the park, baking a pie, driving around with no destination in mind. Simple things have been making a meal, watching a TV show, reading for fifteen minutes.

Remember, you're a person first, second, and third. Take time to take care of your hearts and remember that sometimes you need to make decisions to protect you as a person even if they aren't great for you as a student.

Thanks meats, that was genuinely helpful. I’ll keep that rule of 3’s in mind!

I’m realizing how crucial self care is in vet school. I thought I was pretty good at it, but in times like these I really need to hike up my boots and be super duper organized to do self care AND study my butt off. Therapy helps, too. Thankfully we have 2 counselors at the school who provide free sessions to anyone who wants it. But man even still it’s hard to WANT to study for everything. And this is coming from someone who loves to learn about science.

Hey guys!!! Checking in here. So, life update: I PASSED NEUROANATOMY!!!!! No idea how, just did it (by the skin of my teeth!). I felt the burnout a few weeks ago and school, since we're just starting a new section (the daunting Block 3!!) I'm getting into the groove. I kicked but during the last section with 2 A+'s (in very minor courses) but I'm proud of myself 🙂 Also...I FINALIZED THE ADOPTION OF ONE OF THE RESEARCH BEAGLES!!! An amazing technician/teacher took him for me on Thanksgiving and has kept him for me until Sunday when I was finally able to bring him home!!! He did great the first few nights but unfortuntely today he vomited a few times (poor guy had a tummy ache). But I learned something about him.......he chews ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING when he is nauseous: cables, harnesses, water bottles, chargers, toys, surge protectors, etc. So...I had to bust out the crate 🙁 I wish I didn't have to because he's spent his whole life (he's 9.5 years old) locked up in a crate but I had to protect him and my stuff while I was at class. But he was good with it and when I got home he was feeling much better! He got a nice dinner of cottage cheese, plain white rice, and a nice dose of famotidine 🙂 Overall, nervewracking but eventful day and overall decent week but don't quote me on that 😛 still got 2 more days until the weekend! But SPECIAL SPECIES SYMPOSIUM THIS WEEKEND!!! I'll get to do wet labs on darting, exotic animal imaging, and do a simulation of communication through exotics cases!!! Super excited 🙂 Hope everything is going well for you all!!! We're almost there!! I'm done on May 15th and then start work full time in the ER for 9 of the 12 weeks of summer! I'm psyched because it's only 10 hour days, 4 days a week and then I get 3 days to do WHATEVER!!!! So excited!!! :biglove:

Forgot to put a picture!!! Quote away guys 🙂 we need more cuteness on this forum :biglove:

My dog was a research dog for 10.5 years and the first couple weeks I had her she would mostly stay in her crate and felt more comfortable in it 🙂 she doesn't care for it as much now but when we travel and in new places she'll go back to it sometimes!

Felt really confident walking out of my last anatomy practical ever, but after hearing everyone talk about, I realized I didn’t do that great lol. This semester has been terrible and I’m so ready to go home.

On the bright side, I get to do an avian orthopedic surgery lab tomorrow. :chicken:

First rule of life (errr...vet school) don’t psych yourself out based on what other people talk about after the exam!

At least you never have to do an anatomy practical ever again! We've got anatomy classes integrated throughout our curriculum until the end of 2nd year 😢

True! I know I difinitely missed some, but hopefully not as many as I think

Do you mean like never ever?

Because we have anatomy in the first year but then in year 3 we have applied anatomy courses to help prepare you for clinics and practice like doing a tplo on a cadaver.

You can never be truly done with anatomy, but as far as having a class specifically for anatomy, yes I’m done with practicals. Just one more written test.

Ew
All that stuff is in electives for us because lol if I'm ever gonna be doing a TPLO

I would have loved an applied anatomy class later on. Instead you hit clinics and they're like, "lolol remember the eighteen things you had to memorize on this bone? I hope you remember in detail they three important ones I want you to know RIGHT NOW!"

Hey, who's doing NIH-BI this year???

It's at Tufts this year, and I'm pretty sure there are some tufters on here that I want to see if they'll be there over the summer -- who's going to be around?

Also, for those who have done it before, have you guys had a "visit NIH Day"?
