Cornell c/o 2023 applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The OOS waitlist moves pretty fast typically, IS will move some but usually a little later in the cycle. From what I remember from my class discussing it that is. Prep your cozy warm clothing if you're headed this way, we're having a mild winter this year so hopefully next won't be terrible.

Congrats to everyone that's made their decision so far.

Any current students have recommendations for tablets? My tablet broke and I'm looking into buying a new one but want to be sure I'd be able to use it in the fall.

OOS alternate list! Does anyone know how important it is to attend the information session dates? Like does it help you move off the waitlist vs not going? I would want to visit before making a decision, and would go on my own, but I have been invited to interviews at other schools on all 3 of Cornell's info session dates, and I'm not sure I really want to sacrifice a school I might get accepted into for one that has already waitlisted me...

From what I can tell, I don’t really think that going to the info session is going to make a change in your place on the waitlist - it’s just a method to help you get to know the school better (specifically, I think, the curriculum, because they mentioned that they want to explain/clarify their curriculum to students who come to the sessions, which is potentially because people might not know they’re highly PBL). Basically, the dates are more a tool for them to get you to fall in love with them and be ready to be committed to them rather than weeding out the (probably hundreds of) waitlisted kids who can’t go for whatever reason. I’d say go to the interviews, especially since you said you’d visit on your own anyways.

Also, anyone know just how fast this OOS waitlist moves? Haven’t heard yet that anyone’s gotten off of it. Will it take a week to start hearing that? A month? More?

Ok cool, thanks! Maybe someone from admissions can send me some info on the curriculum via email instead

I don’t know for sure, but my guess is it’s be more like a month or more since most OOS students likely haven’t heard from wherever their in state is yet. Cornell may also be a school that doesn’t notify waitlisters until after the April acceptance deadline when they know exactly how many seats they have to fill. If you haven’t, I’d check last year’s thread and maybe even 2021 and see when the first person to post a waitlist acceptance was.

I would be surprised if there was serious movement this early! If you think about it, a lot of schools haven’t even gotten back to applicants about decisions, so I’m expecting to wait for a couple of weeks before hearing of any movement

I got my prerec thing sorted! I went to a small liberal arts college so our course numbering doesn't adhere to the 100, 200, 300-level numbering scheme, so my upper division animal phys has a number in the 100s. It's all fixed now though! Yay!

from past threads, it looks like it really doesn't start moving until april. and the decision letter also says to expect news around the april 15th deadline too.

If we hear from the alternate list sooner than April 15th, would we only have the typical 24-48 hours to decide? Or do you think we would get until April 15 like everyone who was initially offered admission?

Other schools that pull from the waitlist before the deadline give you until April 15 to decide, so I would assume Cornell would be the same if they did end up pulling before the deadline since they can’t make you make a decision before that date and without making the aavmc v mad because they have to wait until you have heard back from all schools

signed up for the information session on Jan 25th! anyone know if we'll receive a confirmation email about the session we picked?

just called and they said they’d send out a confirmation email within the next few days with a schedule and everything!

Awesome, thank you!! I guess they've been super busy these past few days.

Does anyone have any idea about the info session dress code??
Last year outfits ranged from sweatshirts and jeans to dresses for women/button down shirt with tie for men. So really there is no dress code lol. I personally went for the middle ground, just to look nice and presentable, with a nice blouse, black pants, and boots.
EDIT: Ithaca in January/February is COLD and the day is superrr long, so make sure you're comfortable!

Does anyone else have information on whether the information sessions make or break your chance of moving up the waitlist at all? The days are all on Friday (as you know) and I don't have my school schedule yet so it's possible I have exams those days in February but I don't know right now.

I know it's important to visit and learn about the curriculum but I don't like the idea of missing class at unless 100% absolutely necessary. Also the plane tickets are super expensive from Denver to Ithaca so I'm on the fence about that too.

I think this was addressed a little bit above already, or maybe it was from past threads... either way, all the info i've found seems to say that it doesn't make or break your position on the waitlist (people who have gone don't get pulled off, people who don't go still get in), but that it is possible that it can help it. especially since they don't interview, this is your chance to meet the head of admissions and make some connections at the school that you might not otherwise have the chance to do and show dedication and interest in the school.
i think though that you could show that you are super interested without going, it just might be some extra work. they can't reasonably expect that everyone on the waitlist will be able to make one of those 3 dates, regardless of interest level. people have jobs, life, expenses, other interviews, etc. its winter in upstate NY, so travel is especially hard.
maybe email jennifer mailey and say how disappointed you are that you can't make it, but you love the school and are super interested *insert cornell specific perks here* thanks for the consideration etc etc

Has anyone heard whether there would be space for their guest yet? My mom decided she wants to come and im hoping there will be room for her 🙂

I’m on the waitlist (OOS). I read that if possible they will try and pull people off before the deadline. Does anyone know how often this happens, and if it does, do you still have to respond in 48 hrs or do you have till the April deadline?

Pretty sure you’d have til the April deadline because no school can force you to make your decision BEFORE that deadline. Waitlisted or outright accepted shouldn’t make a difference. They still have to let you wait until you’ve heard from all schools before making a decision.

Regarding the open house, do you remember if there was a place to drop off your things before the tour? I won't be driving, so I'm curious if I will have to tote my stuff around. Thanks!

Hmm I'm sorry I didn't notice if there was because I drove, but if someone else wants to chime in that knows more feel free!

Do you remember if Cornell gave out any parking passes to the information session? My family and I will be driving there and would like to know if there's free parking available. Thank you!

When you chose an info session date there was a box to check if you wanted a parking pass.
If you missed it, I’d email admissions

Ahh you're right I totally forgot about that!! Thank you ^^ Pretty sure I checked the box but I haven't received it, will follow up if I still don't get anything tomorrow since I'm attending the Jan 25th session.

You won't receive it by email, you have to go pick it up the morning of the info session. It was super quick and easy to do! If they haven't already, they will email you with instructions on where to pick it up.

Ahh that makes sense! Thank you so much 🙂

Does anyone know what the information session includes? Or have a vague idea what the schedule will be like? I was hoping to meet with a professor while I'm there but I have no idea if that will be possible because we don't have an itinerary.

They usually end up emailing you the schedule so I'm sure you'll have it before the date, but if I remember correctly it's a pretty full day (think like 7:45am to 5pm) , there wasn't a ton of time for anything extra during the day itself. I think it would be safest to try to meet with the professor you're interested in speaking with the evening before or after the day ends (I think its around 5ish?). Hope that's a little bit helpful!

Here's a copy of the itinerary I got the other day.

Hi everyone, I'm on the IS waitlist but have received an acceptance at another school that I would much rather go to than cornell, and am waiting on decisions from a few other schools that i'd probably also rather attend. I'm prepared for everyone who's about to roast me because cornell will be cheaper if i get called off, to varying degrees depending on other decisions, but i'm not a fan of the school (i only even applied because it's my IS). i'm currently trying to decide if i should go to my info session or not. on one hand, there's the chance it could change my mind and make me want to accept my seat here should i get one, but i also don't want to waste time/money traveling to a school I don't really intend to go to and might not ever get accepted to anyway.

In short, those who have attended an info session, what did you think of it/do you think it helped your decision making process? Specifically, how was the tutor group thing (not a fan of PBL so wondering how that will be)? and realistically, what are my chances of actually being called off the IS waitlist, because i know IS waitlists tend to not move as much? thanks in advance! :help:

Any chance the acceptance is for CSU? If so I might see you there as I have just been accepted IS! (I’m on the OS waitlist at Cornell)

Hi all, I was accepted IS and I've already sent in my deposit! However, I'm currently working in California until the summer, and it's really expensive to fly back to NY just for an information session. If I'm already committed to CVM, do you think it's okay to not attend a session? I know the sessions are not mandatory, but they are making me feel a bit guilty for not being able to go 🙁

Hello hello! I guess we'll be classmates since I've accepted my OOS spot ^^ I attended the information session on Jan 25th and although it was super interesting and well organized, I personally do think that if you've made a decision that Cornell is the one you want to attend, it wouldn't sway your opinion too much. That being said, they did give a mock tutorial on how problem-based learning works so if you understand how it works, then it shouldn't be a problem. I personally loved the mock session they gave us and how PBL really guides your thinking and is a group effort to pool knowledge together. If you have any questions about the session I'm happy to answer them 🙂

If it’s not a mandatory thing, don’t feel bad about not being able to go. Save your money for tuition or part of your first months rent. You could always email admissions and ask for any information that they will be giving out since you’re unable to attend.

Going to the info session could either confirm that you don't want to go to Cornell or it could confuse you if you enjoy your visit. I was not familiar with the PBL format and I really enjoyed the session, I think that was probably the most helpful part of the day and made me really excited to start vet school. There were also parts of the info session/tours that I didn't like, in particular after seeing Kansas' brand new gross anatomy labs Cornell doesn't even compare. If you know deep down that you don't want to go to Cornell, then don't waste your time and money, but if you are doubting that decision at all, visiting the school is the only way you'll get a real feel for what it's like and whether you can picture yourself there or not.

Hello! How exciting! 🙂 Thanks for your reply. So I'm reading about PBL online, and I'm pretty sure one of my animal physiology classes did some of this. Did their tutorial involve groups of people, with a leader, and you were given a problem to solve?

Welcome to Cornell CVM, so excited to have you! I'm a current first year and I think that flying all the way over here from California when you're already committed wouldn't be worth it. Don't let them guilt you into it! They honestly will go over a lot of the same things when you come for orientation, and that's when you really get the chance to meet people in your class and learn about the school. I really wouldn't worry at all if you don't come!

If anyone is unable to attend an information session but really wants to learn/chat about PBL I'm around a little since this is our distribution period and a little lighter workload. I'm a tour guide and I've also designed other PBL cases for some of our summer camps. I can't discuss the cases we actually use in the curriculum but I can probably answer some questions.

That's awesome, hello! It'd be great if you could send me the info, but don't worry too much about it if you can't 🙂
