Cornell c/o 2023 applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thank you!

Academics: overall 3.91 GPA, 167/170 verbal/quant GRE score
Experience: volunteer at a no-kill rescue shelter for 2 years, volunteer then vet assistant at an animal hospital for 2 years, independent research project in summer, executive in a non-profit organization advocating for children with disabilities for 1 year, summer field research course to marine mammal rescue facility in Mexico for 1 week

I think that's the most important stuff, my experience stats are not all that impressive compared to many. Let me know if you have any more questions ^^
Wow. Your stats are amazing. Congratulations! If that’s the cutoff, I have no chance.

Thank you very much for the kind words. But don't give up hope!! Not only am I OOS but also international, plus the "years" thing may seem like a lot but I guarantee the hours aren't super high! Keep faith 🙂

I’m a fellow Canadian! Are you from Ontario? I’ll hold onto a sliver of hope. Worst case scenario, I’ll apply again next year. 🙂

Yes I'm currently doing my undergrad in Ontario! Don't give up!! I've heard that people still receive calls tomorrow, and then there's still a chance for waitlist. You've got the right mentality in not giving up your dreams 😀

Thanks a ton! I'm hoping my GPA doesn't kill me out of the competition. 3.6 for HBSc, and 3.95 for MSc. GRE was 167 and 157 V/Q. And then a bunch of research hours and animal handling. Who knows.

Congrats to everyone so far!!! do you guys think that calls will continue tomorrow? Also any OOS (not including international) acceptances?

I'm assuming calls are done because its almost 5 here, does anyone know if they have more to call tomorrow? i'm IS and thought I had a pretty good shot so i'm really bummed rn 🙁
Last year they made calls over 2 days and there was no order (it's not like they did IS one day and OOS the next or they did the people they liked better the first day etc.)! Stay hopeful 😀

IS accepted and got a call at around 5:00 today!! Just wanted to give everyone a heads up the area code on my call was 585 (Rochester). A current student called me, so maybe he was using his cell or something? Anyway, just be on the lookout for non 607 codes too 🙂 Good luck to everyone tomorrow!

Has anyone heard anything today? I wonder if they finished all of the calls in one day this year.

I have a feeling they did it all in one day since they had multiple callers and the calls started at around 10 am and ended at around 5 pm. But I’m still hopeful

I really didn't think they had done it all in one day because it just didn't seem like a whole lot of people had heard either on here or on the APVMA facebook page but you might be right 🙁

It’s almost 11am and no one here has heard anything. As much as I wish there were more phone calls today, it seems like they’ve already finished. 🙁 Here’s hoping for the waitlist.

You have to keep in mind that a small fraction of applicants are actually on SDN. I don't know whether they have finished making calls, but I wouldn't jump right to assuming they're done. Not only is it upsetting to you, but it's upsetting to everyone else reading the forum. It's not over until it's over and no one knows anything for sure.

You’re right. We all have to keep a positive mind and be hopeful. I wish the best of luck to the rest of the applicants!

You’re right! Until we get that PIN number and decision box on the tracker (hopefully at the same time), we won’t know for sure. Keeping my fingers and toes crossed for everyone applying this year and and in future years! 😉

So I done lost my patience and called. Office of Admissions said they weren't done making calls and then said EARLY NEXT WEEK.

WTF.
Oh thank you, brave soul! I was just about ready to start crying in my corn flakes. Good luck everyone and congratulations again to those who have already been accepted.

Like they’re going to keep calling until next week? Or portals will be updated next week? They’re really playing with us...😕

I'm assuming they mean that acceptance calls are done, and that everyone else will be notified of their status by email early next week

They didn't make it seem like that. More made it seem like they still had calls to make. So weather that means they're still making calls until 5pm today or they're making calls though tomorrow/'early next week" (including wait list and rejection emails next week) is up for interpretation. I didn't want to pry- felt like I was already crossing the line with calling anyway.

zoo internship in St. Louis

You had an internship at the StL Zoo?! I’m super jealous that place is amazing, I wish I had that opportunity!! A prof who I’m really close with and wrote one of my eLORs told me not to try because they’re impossible to get (he works closely with them so I think he was just trying to give me advice but I think I shouldn’t have listened to him lol)

It wasn't a veterinary internship, but a keeper internship in the Jungle of the Apes. I did see 2 veterinary procedures (maybe 6 hours total) - an orangutan had airsacculitis and a chimpanzee had a peritonitis and was euthanized, all of which I was present for. I went to Wash U, which is right across the street from the zoo. The other girl I interned with was from U of I, I believe. It was an amazing experience for me, but I have to be totally candid - I didn't enjoy the keepers and wasn't able to get a recommendation from them. I didn't even ask. They were very unprofessional (they chatted and gossipped a lot - I spoke up and was told I wasn't a team player. I actually wrote about this experience on my Cornell app) and weren't interested in teaching us about husbandry. So, it was a learning experience in many ways. It is competitive, but worst case they say no. Just go for it.

Also, I think it helped that I applied for the Jungle of the Apes under the guise of Anthropology. BIological anthropologists study apes - the other intern was also an anthropologist, as was one keeper. I actually studied cultural anthropology/wrote my thesis in cultural anthro, but I think it helped. I probably would not have been selected for a different section of the zoo.

I’m also a WashU student! Currently going into my last semester of senior year. I’m sorry you had such a negative experience with the keepers, but I’m glad you felt you still learned something. It makes total sense that your ability to get the internship was supported by your cultural anthro major - I’m a bio major and we get relatively frequent emails from the department about opportunities to help with a study on foxes at the StL Zoo, so I think if I applied to any area of the zoo it would be that one because my major would support that over anything else (though I’ve also heard it’s not an experience most people learn from, so I’ve felt discouraged to apply).
