Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

I just had my DO letter rejected from DMU...please someone tell me if something has happened like this to them? They haven't emailed me back why they did this! Has anyone had problems with LORs? I love this school I can't believe this is happening!

It didn't happen to me, but I've heard of it happening to others. DMU has very specific LOR requirements - your letter has to be from someone you shadowed and it cannot be from someone you have a personal relationship with of any kind - family member, friend, family friend, etc. Your best option is to call DMU and see why exactly yours was rejected and what you need to do to fix it.

Yep and this letter fits all those requirements. I emailed yesterday and I don't want to be "that" person that harasses the admissions office. But I'm going nuts! Hopefully it's a HUGE misunderstanding

Nope practicing DO for 20 years, member of the AOA. Still no word :/ I am going to feel horrible if I have to get my DO to re-write it
 
So I've been complete since the end of July. Is it a bad sign that I haven't heard from them yet? I know they say 60 days, but I'm a reapplicant and I was put on hold last year after like 2 weeks. I'm afraid it's going to be an outright rejection and maybe that process takes longer 😕 #paranoid

I had this issue too. There was something about the content of the letter not describing my clinical experience explicitly. So, I sent them my MD clinical letter and it got cleared up. Now, I have an interview.

Don't stress 😉

Oh crap. Meaning he will have to write it over again, as if the first time wasn't bad enough! Thanks for letting me know though I appreciate it
 
It's not even been a week yet and I'm dying to know my decision... these next two weeks are going to be awful.

2-3 weeks for a decision?

My interview is on Monday. I'm excited.. but really nervous 🙁
 
Yeah, they tell you that you WILL have a decision in three weeks. So excited!! Good luck to you, there's no reason to be nervous.
 
From my notes, they expect 4100 apps, 700-800 interviews, 450 acceptances, and 220+ matriculants. Pretty good odds.
 
Over 50% is good! Anyone know if at the AdCom meeting at the end of September will make a decision on all September interviews?

They say to give them 2-3 weeks from your interview date. I'm hoping to hear something between 9/25-9/28 based on last year's thread.
 
Leaving for Des Moines in a couple hours! Oh boy! This is really happening!
 
Plane to des moines got cancelled. Managed to get on another flight but wont be there til 1130 tonight! Pretty sure seeing that my flight was cancelled was more stressful than this interview is gonna be hahaha

This post is on the behalf of a friend of mine who just found out today that he got an interview invite at DMU. He doesn't use SDN, so I thought I would update everyone. I don't want to get anyone's hopes up if this isn't the case, but it miiiiiiiiiiiiiight mean that they are starting to send out a second wave of invites. Maybe.
 
Well dont think im gonna make it to DMU. Ive had 2 flights get cancelled and all my hopes in getting there rest on the weather in houston clearing up in the next hour. I hope they let me change the date to something soon as all of this was out of my control......
 
that really sucks... i guess it is too late to hop on 35 and head north?

I'm sorry 🙁 I would just call DMU first thing in the morning and explain the situation. I'm sure they'll let you reschedule for another date soon.
 
Well they are giving my flight one last shot. Its been raining nonstop in houston and it just cleared up so they gave us the go ahead. I've been on and off this plane 3 times with two previous cancellations. If I can get to Houston I'm golden cause weather in Des Moines isnt bad.

I would definitely try and get that cleared up. If you go back far enough in this thread you'll see that there were a lot of us who got our letters rejected by mistake. They rejected my committee letter over some misunderstanding. I went back and forth over email trying to get the person to understand their mistake but eventually I had to get my committee coordinator to contact them and clarify. It's a huge pain and I don't know why people's letters are being rejected so much but definitely contact them to fix it because it's probably a mistake.

Wow that sucks so much!! I hope you make it! I'm sure you're not the first interviewee to have a flight cancelled so I'm sure DMU will understand if you can't make it.

What airline is this? What is the reason for all these cancellations?
 
Asking this for my peace of mind. Has DMU not sent out their second wave of interview invites yet? I have been waiting for more than a month now. I have read so many amazing things about this school, mostly on SDN, that I would love a chance to go see what all the hype is about. 🙂

Looks like im gonna make it!! It was united and they cancelled so many times because the weather in Houston was horrible until about an hour ago. Im just chillin at the airport until my flight to Des Moines. Got here with 30 minutes to spare. What a trip..... Good news is i got another II mid flight. Pretty solid!

See my post from earlier today. One of my friends who does not use SDN received an interview invite this afternoon which makes me believe that the 2nd wave MIGHT be starting...

Just had my interview today.


First and foremost, the students are all SO ****ING HAPPY. I loved it. There is such a "team" atmosphere at this school, it was incredible.

Second. The faculty. They all seemed so approachable, and the ones I did talk to (also the deans of admissions) were all great. Evidently, it is not unusual for the professors to literally hang out in the cafeteria and the library just small talking and assisting students.

The facility, especially the surgical lab (you get to use it SECOND year) and the anatomy lab were both great. The anatomy lab is a technological dream, and the surgical lab allows you to be scrub certified before you even start your rotations. The simulation OR has i think 6 beds which includes everything--even the sinks to scrub in. The lecture halls are absolutely gorgeous and have an "ivy league" feel.

Their COMLEX and USMLE scores are top in the nation.

95% of students match into their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd choice residencies.

The interview felt like a causual conversation between myself, a PhD, and a 2nd year--jokes, laughter, all that.

I was thoroughly impressed, and would be very happy to attend this institution.

Thanks! I got my 5th from ACOM. DMU is still my #1 though!
 
those that are interviewing tomorrow, watch for me around 1pm. I will be the one to sit around make sure that you guys behave. and anyone who doesn't is going to get a spanking.

Hahaha im gonna look out for you. I'll be wearing a charcoal suit with a blue shirt and tie. White guy shaved (ish) head.
