Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

Yea seriously! I met a few people at my interview that were married for at least a few years. Osteopathic Medicine definitely attracts more non-traditional students than allopathic medicine. I am a non-trad student but no where near marriage!

Yeah I think you're right - osteopathic schools seem to have many more non-traditional students than allopathic schools. Everyone at DMU is awesome though! 🙂

Wow, everyone is either dating or married with kids/hoping or planning to have kids!

Are there any single people out there attending DMU? I am starting to think that DocEspana's posts about medical school relationships/dating are true.
+2. After reading his post, I'm thinking way more about it now and it's scaring me haha

which post are you guys talking about?
Well the first trends, and i will repeat them are these. 1) Taken girls stay taken indefinitely. 2) Single women become a wildcard, but generally remain single. 3) All guys regardless of how they enter, either become single or totally taken within 60 days of school starting, a "dating" medical student is like a unicorn. At least for a while, things get easier in later semesters.

Remember how in college your RA/CA/upper classmen told you that "floorcest" is bad. That you really should avoid hooking up with or dating people on your floor at all costs. Yea. Still holds true. The single guys all get drunk and hook up with the single women in the class. Hook ups happen. Everyone finds out. We all gossip and ideally we all quickly forget and never talk of it again. Inter-class dating has never ended well but also occasionally happens. I always hear an anecdote of meeting in medical school and getting married, but I've never actually met a person who can actually name a couple this has happened to. (not that i doubt it, but these things are surprisingly uncommon).

Now as for dating outside of medical school. Its shockingly uncommon too, but it occurs. Its just hard. You tend to lose social skills due to the isolation of all the time spent studying with people studying the same archaiac medicine facts. Add to that how medicine is unbelievably time consuming and so is starting a relationship. Also when you go out, you tend to go out in giant packs of medical students where you are both self-contained within your pocket of friends (so the urge to find people is lower) and frakly that giant gaggle of students is intimidating to onlookers and they don't want to encroach on it, as I've been told many times by people i briefly dated haha.

Now dating is entirely possible. I've had two decently long term relationships in medical school with people I've met along the line. But both of those situations were unique because I was at a point in my education where I had a very easy month so I could actually punch out dates and not miss out on a ton of studying. Also they were both deep into my education so I was already extremely "time efficient" with my studying. The nice part of dating like this? I dont have to play games and appear busy. I really am busy and might not get back to you for a day or two just because I couldnt spare the time for a phone call and felt that sending a one sentence text would be rude, so i just waited til i had a few free minutes a day or two later. The downside of dating in medical school? Most people will think that is intriguing at first, but when they realize you will always be like that and its not 'a game' they will become very very concerned about how much time you will be able to spend with them.

This one.

Oh' lord. That post is terribly depressing! 🙁 I had this image in my head- probably from watching too much Scrubs - where most people find their soul mate in medical school, where it is easier to find someone with similar interests/goals, and they all live happily ever after. Sigh...things we sacrifice to become doctors.

Well there seems to be a good amount of us still here, so don't despair yet.

" 2) Single women become a wildcard, but generally remain single."

Well that sucks. Tbh though, I think if someone's at least somewhat interesting and social (which I'm assuming they will be because they're in medical school), then they'll be okay dating/relationship wise.

I always figured the issue was not the being interesting/social part, but the not having any free time for anything part. I don't know how people who are married and/or have children survive in medical school, but more power to them!

I always thought this as well. Who better to understand the stresses and the time commitment of med. school than a fellow student? Ahh well, we'll see how things turn out when we actually become medical students.

I was thinking under the circumstance that you date a classmate, but either case it's true there just isn't a lot of free time 🙁

Exactly. Although it's apparently not a good idea to date another student...Eh, we'll see!

I met my husband during my first semester of grad school, full time student and full time job. If he could handle me being stressed to the max during those two years, I'm sure he'll handle med school just fine. It's so nice to have someone to come home to that I can vent to (and I'm SO glad he's into engineering and not medicine, gives us something else to talk about!), and who also makes dinner, does laundry... 🙂

That's awesome!

angldrops my parents met in med school, they weren't the same year, but it can happen.... i'm heading to des moines this weekend for a "second look." hoping to get a good feel for the school without the stress of the interview day. Also going to catch the OU vs. Iowa State football game Saturday.

Does DMU actually do "second look" days? I was hoping to head out that direction in March to start looking for places to live, but if they did second looks I'd be willing to make the trip again.

accepted! interviewed on the 26th of october.

I don't think so. I haven't heard of any DO school that does, probably just because the deposits are huge and non-refundable so most people decide before the spring. I just emailed the school and they set something up. I can let you know how it goes though and if it is worth doing. I was also planning to check out the surrounding area. My boyfriend is a chef so he wants to scope the restaurant scene as well.

Oh sweet, thanks!

And congrats, wooki!

thanks guys. i am super excited by this school. everything is just so awesome. i didn't understand where the phenomenal reputation was coming from until i visited DMU for my interview. it's an absolutely incredible school.

you were at my interview! male or female? and what school were you from?

Accepted! Interviewed on 10/25 (now I need to email my guide as they aparently had a bragging rights pool going between guides on who/how many of their "charges" get accepted).

Congrats on all the new acceptances! Here's the FB page for our class if you want to join.

Now, I need to figure out how to join Facebook first.

Accepted and interviewed on 10/25 too. 😀

So on the Class Guide page, we have dates for orientation and first day of classes; what about White Coat Ceremony? And why does orientation take three days??

I think that the white coat ceremony happens about 2-3 weeks after school actually starts. And Orientation takes 3 days because...actually, I don't know. It is long, it is mandatory, and you will need coffee.

So what exactly happens at orientation?

Ha thanks for being up front and honest MiChow! BTW are there good coffee shops near DMU?

Just a lot of presentations and info about the school. If I remember right from my Master's program orientation (we're with the DOs and do the same orientation as them), the third day is mostly optional sessions if you want tours of places or want to learn more about how to use your computer, etc.

For the first two-days you'll have presentations from financial aid, educational support services, the anatomy department, etc. in the morning and then you'll have lunch with people from your program and your program advisor, and in the afternoon will break off to specific sessions for your program.

Yes, there is a cafe inside the main building of the school that serves Starbucks coffee. And within a couple blocks there is both a Brugers Bagels and a Caribou Coffee!

If it helps, it was on August 25th last year (Saturday) so it will probably be right around that time.

Here's the link to the family weekend page which has info about last year's white coat ceremony - I imagine this will be updated as it gets closer to that date.

Awesome, thanks! That's exactly the type of info I was looking for! My grandma's birthday is the Saturday between orientation and start of classes, and I really want to be able to go home for one last weekend.

You rock! Thanks!

it's getting cold here on the east coast... how would i survive iowa? 🙁

Congratulations to all those accepted from DMU's 2017 Pod Class! We look forward to meeting everyone in August!

I'm sure this is somewhere in the thread but I am in the complete and 60 day review process. Do they send out ii any day of the week or was there a common day most people heard on (I.e mon-fri). Just really excited and wanna go check this school out. I keep checking my email like a neurotic psycho lol

Thank you

I got my II before I finished the secondary; I think it was on a Tuesday or Wednesday? But I don't know if they send II's randomly or in batches.

Today is day 58 for me. I would like to know this as well..

Welp, just got an email from DMU. Placed on pre-interview hold.

I waited 58 days for a response...only to be told that I now need to wait an indefinite amount of time more

Me right now:

At least it's better than a rejection... Has anyone been placed on hold and received an interview invite?
