Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Were there any secondaries?

I'm wondering what kind of chance I would have, non-science 3.73, science 3.49, cumulative 3.57

Hey all, I am applying here for 2018 class!! I currently have a SGPA 3.63 and CGPA 3.63 I take my MCAT in 13 days so I am hoping for a nice MCAT score. Whatever I get I will still apply but if it is too low I will retake as soon as possible. I am hoping to have everything submitted to Des Moines by end of August. Could anyone tell me if at the end of the MCAT does it show you a preliminary or unofficial test score like the GRE does? Or do you just have to wait the 30 days to get your scores? I am really hoping I do not have to retake but I have to be prepared for anything and everything at this point. I have been working 2 full time jobs (One as a Paramedic 10 years now and the other as a Police Officer 5 years now) for the last 5 years while carrying 9-12 hours a semester. I am ready to get into Med School and start.....Good luck to everyone

Hi, everyone! Excited to be applying here as well.

Hey all, I am applying here for 2018 class!! I currently have a SGPA 3.59 and CGPA 3.62 I take my MCAT in 13 days so I am hoping for a nice MCAT score. Nope, unfortunately you're in for 30+ days of waiting and wondering...try not to stalk sdn too much in the meantime, it can make you a bit crazy. 😉 Also, don't go in steeling yourself for a retake, because you'll automatically be setting yourself up to have an "out" if something happens you don't anticipate. It's not a "feel-good" test for anyone, but go in with confidence. Good luck!

Unfortunately you have to wait 30-35 days before you get your scores. It was the longest month of my life lol. Good luck!

I have been studying non-stop for the last 6 weeks for MCAT and some days I feel like I am regressing lol 🙂 and other days I feel like I will do awesome. Your right I need to just go in with a positive attitude and confidence and just do the best I can.

Oh man 😉 I was hoping it was like the GRE because at the end of it you could see the unofficial scores but wouldn't get them for about 30 days due to the writing sample section. Oh well. I have been using MCAT-Prep practice tests as well as AAMC Practice tests. Are these similar to the actual test or should I have been doing Kaplan? I have Kaplan study guides but no Kaplan practice tests.

I think that the AAMC tests are the best predictors of your actual test day score. From my experience, Kaplan's tests are much harder but curved in your favor (almost too much) resulting in an inflated score. So overall, AAMC test will benefit you more. Kaplan can just give you some additional practice (which can never hurt).

Ok that is great to hear....Ill keep on with my studies. Have you already applied? Have you interviewed? How many schools are you applying to? sorry for all the personal questions just curious. I only have MCAT results and then I will submit my apps. Already submitted my app to be verified. I am only applying to Des Moines. Is that dumb? My wife wants to stay in Iowa since this is where we are from and have a lot of family support here. Kind of putting all my eggs into one basket here. But its a wonderful school and I wouldn't really want to go to any other school anyways.

If you haven't done so, I highly recommend going to visit and establishing a relationship because it never hurts when they can put a name and a face together.

Thanks. I am trying to set up a visit around the time I take the MCAT in about 12 days.

And Des Moines comes out of the shadows with a Thank You email :naughty:

+1 don't do anything yet but just reminding you that you applied here haha

I just opened that email, ready and pumped to write another secondary........... But it was just a thank you email. Oh well, at least I'm caught up now.

Be patient, guys! The secondary came out around this time last year, and it's really simple! Good luck! And if you ever have any questions, please PM me!

A single essay? That wouldn't be so bad, but if they have like five, that's kind of annoying.

If possible, could you give us a heads up on what the essay would be about?

received another teaser email from DMU saying to look out for another email with a program viewbook

you'll get one soon. No worries. I LOVE ARCHER btw. hilarious show.

hahaha yes it is. the voice acting is so perfect.

anyhoo how soon after you guys were verified did this saucy tease of an email arrive? is DMU just playing coy with me or have I been screened? I thought the minimum was 2.8, and I have plenty of clinical experience...

you know what. I realized that the email was because my fiance requested information online to be sent to me. sorry to freak you out. lol my bad. =/

awww, thats...let's just say while your fiance was busy ordering you info about your prospective DO schools, my bf was busy changing his facebook employment status to "senior poonhound at poonhoundery inc"

Anyone get the secondary? Someone on the secondary thread said they got it today.

I was verified last Tuesday, and all I've gotten are the teaser emails. You haven't been left in the cold. Hang in there!

It's here guys! A few essays describing experiences, nothing too bad!

I got mine earlier today. Some people got theirs yesterday. Maybe they are sending them in order of primary submission or something?

* Have you had exposure to a D.O.?
If so, describe your clinical experience with an Osteopathic Physician?

* Describe any clinical exposure you have had with a physician in a rural practice (population of less than 15,000)

* Describe any clinical exposure you have had with a primary care physician (family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, or OBGYN).

* Do you fluently speak any languages other than English?
If yes, please list language(s)

* Do you have research experience?
If yes, briefly describe the type of research experience and any measurable outcomes (presentations, publications, etc.).

If yes, briefly describe the type of research experience and any measurable outcomes (presentations, publications, etc.). (900 word limit)

Is there anything since you submitted your primary application that you would like included in your file?

finally some inspirational material for loyola's secondary question about obtaining consent for experimental treatment.

"This one time, on Archer..."

got my secondary today too. It'd make sense if it were in order of primary submission, because I submitted way back in June

ugh i want to watch that video clip but Im at work ...lol...why im on here at work i have no idea.... o well. good luck with the secondary everyone!

How long are you making your essays? I know the last one says 900 word limit but the others have nothing

Got the secondary today 🙂

When they ask us to describe clinical exposure with a physician in a rural practice or a primary care physician, what kinds of exposure are valid? For example, I have asthma and have been to my pediatrician reguarly for the past 19 years. Would I be able to describe my experience as a patient or do they mean physician shadowing, interning, etc...?

When they ask for a physician's contact info under the rural experience and osteopathic physician experience, do they want the rural physician or the osteopathic physician?

What if we don't even remember the name of the doctor we worked with in the rural areas? I did an abroad trip and shadowed a foreign doctor for like an hour years ago.... And yes I don't even know their name.

For the last one I have 230 words from a most meaningful from AMCAS. Guess that won't cut it 🙁

For the describing a clinical experience and clinical exposure, are they just asking you to tell them what exactly you did or are they looking for an experience?

I guess I'm asking, are these two or three sentence answers or are they essays?

Well, I feel like I really messed up on my secondary....my most meaningful essay is super short...i didn't even see the "900 word limit" guide at the bottom. Do not know why I didn't see it. I answered it like a short answer.
Now I am freaking out....I don't feel super competitive anyway and now this. Yay....

I've been told many times to not use the character limit as a guide. It's better to make your point in a clear, concise way and keep the reader's attention. I wouldn't let it freak you out. Mine wasn't that long either. I averaged 300-500 words per essay and submitted.

Ok...well that makes me feel a bit better. I am at about 250 for that one.

I did a paragraph (4-5 sentences) for each "description" on my experiences with the DO and family medicine doctor....

If myural and family med experiences are the same should I say same as above?
