Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just interviewed here yesterday, and I had a great time! The admissions staff, students, and faculty could not have been friendlier. The thing I liked most about the school was the atmosphere. Current students talked about the camaraderie at the school, and I got a sense of it just from being there for a few hours.

The interview day started with introductions at a conference table. Dr. Mueller, Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs, had us go around the table and give a brief background and a unique fact about ourselves. He would then ask very conversational follow-up questions just to get to know everyone. Dr. Mueller was awesome!

Next we toured the lab facilities, listened to a presentation about DMU from Dr. Plundo, and saw OMM in action. We then had lunch with students and got to ask questions. The interviews started after lunch. You either waited for the interviewers to come get you, or went on a student led tour. There were three interview time slots with the first at 1:15, then 2:00, and finally 2:45. We were free to go after our interview and tour.

My interview lasted 45 minutes and was very low stress. They asked about my hometown, why DMU, why DO, and some other questions. A couple times we went off on little tangents. Overall a very enjoyable interview (as enjoyable as they can be). Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions before your interview. I'll do my best to respond quickly. Good luck everyone!

I can say that my interview experience was spot on with this description above. I'm very glad DMU has been my first interview. They make you feel at home, even with the 6 hours or so that you are there.

Anyone gotten II with no rural clinical experience?

I have had plenty experience with under served populations but none specifically with rural. I received an ii earlier this week.

Summary of my experience at DMU:
Faculty-
Outstanding, friendly and engaging. Dr. Mueller was awesome!
Facilities- SIM lab was fantastic, OMM rooms were so big and spacious! Library was huge! Everything was really nice.
Lunch-Yum! Make sure u grab the cookies!!
Students- So freaking friendly and helpful.
Interview-Relaxed. No ethical questions. Lasted 40-45 minutes.
In short very good experience. They know how to make you feel at home. Don't be too nervous! 🙂

I've seen interviewees coming through. Looking good peeps!

Did they tell you how long for them to start making decisions about acceptances?

i know this has been mentioned before somewhat, but I just wanna know if I can submit more than three letters of rec? The website did not really say much about additional letters.

Submit as many as you want as long as they are good letters

are there any guys interviewing Sept 25th that would be interested in splitting a room and/or cab?

Anyone interviewing on the 18th hit me up!
Also does the school give preferencesto certain students? like students from Iowa?

I see. I've to just put N/A on that secondary question i guess

where is that rural question on the secondary? Are u talking about, "Please describe your exposure to osteopathic medicine, including (but not limited to) experiences with physicians in primary care or rural practice within the US. How have these experiences impacted you and your pursuit of osteopathic medical education as it relates to the mission of Des Moines University? (500 word limit)"???

Not a significant preference in my opinion. 20% of the 2018 class was from Iowa. The rest is out of state.

Yeah that is the question.

I too just got put on hold today. c3.41/s3.21 26

I was complete on July 25th
Gotcha, Thanks. You're well ahead of me then. I didn't complete email until 8/20. I'll have a number of weeks more to wait it looks like.

I am getting nervous as well, I have been complete since July 28th, really looking forward to this school. Hopefully I don't get put on hold

Those put on hold are put on hold after the interview or before?

Unless this school bucks the trend (someone please correct me if it does) the "hold" after an interview is referred to as waitlisting.

You won't be put on hold after an interview.

Seriously no need to be nervous. They spend the entire day before the interview telling you everything about the school, so that, by the time you interview, you have more talking points than you could possible use.
Just go to my hotel for the interview tomorrow! The city is quite pleasant! Getting pumped/nervous for tomorrow

cool school. The interview is very basic questions and easy. However, still prepare. I didn't at all and it showed. It was not one of my finer interview performances but hopefully I still have a shot.

First year at DMU here, if you have any questions in regards to DMU and/or interview day feel free to PM me. Congrats!

My interview is 9/12 is anyone else scheduled for that date?

Rejected via email...good luck to the rest of you!

Sorry to hear. I'm sure you'll have luck elsewhere. Do you mind sharing your completion date?
I put it in an earlier post, I was complete on July 28th. I sent an update email in the beginning of August stating new grades for a summer class I took and that my Master's thesis got published but after calling the admissions, it seems as though they didn't acknowledge my updates, since A. I never received a confirmation e-mail and B. they only review applications once unless put on hold. I have two other interviews that I posted on the Interview thread, but would have loved an interview from this school.

I am now scared that you were rejected. Your stats are good.
I think this is really a mission based school as well. Though I am thoroughly disappointed because I did a lot of research on this school and liked it, I am sure you will be fine.

I am scared now that you were rejected. Your stats are good. how come they rejected you?
Sorry for the multiple post, but I just wanted to make another note. This is my second cycle, and I have finally learned accept, though very difficult, to not compare myself to others simple based off numbers. Each individual has something to contribute which makes them stand out, and though my stats might have been comparable for this school, I might be lacking in something that you possess. So I want to wish you best of luck, and that this process is not necessarily a numbers game, but a holistic process.

Nesmall2, I agree with you. Everyone is different. But good luck to you. its not the end of world. 🙂

I'll reiterate some of my previous posts that DMU isn't big on the stats of applicants. While the class of 2018 has low tier MD averages, just having good stats means little here. They focus on their mission at DMU, but they also know what type of students they are looking for and what students fit into the atmosphere or appear to be a good fit. They also seek out diversity in applicants from across the US and various different backgrounds. It is one the unique characteristics here at DMU.

Cosigned.

Lol I had lower stats than like all the people on this thread. They definitely look at a lot more than just numbers

I personally stayed at the holiday express by Drake University last year. Small quiet hotel, great continental breakfast for the morning. And only a five minute drive to DMU.

I stayed at the La Quinta in Clive. Reasonably priced, new rooms, breakfast, and a decently quick and easy drive to the school ~15 minutes. I would stay there again in a heartbeat

I stayed at the Days Inn by the airport. Cheap, close to a hyvee for groceies, airport shuttle, free breakfas, 10 min drive to DMU (I took a taxi which was about $12 each way)
