So I got a rather unexpected acceptance to Emory recently, which I am extremely grateful for. Before that though, I was pretty dead set on going to Jeff, to the point where I was already apartment hunting and planning to move to Philly this summer. I really loved Jeff when I interviewed - it was by far my favorite interview experience. In contrast, I really had a sort of unpleasant day at Emory, which I later found out was an exam day or something.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some alternate perspectives on either school. I know that Emory is ranked higher, and I would also probably do the MPH program there if given the chance. I'm originally from PA, though, and I eventually want to practice there. I'm a bit apprehensive about moving to Atlanta, even though I like the city, since I don't have any support network at all, versus Philly, where I'd be fairly comfortable.

But I'm also worried that Emory is too good an opportunity to pass up. They seem to have vastly superior facilities and resources (just an initial impression; I could be completely off base here) and the MPH program is super attractive (I got a great vibe from the guy I talked to at the Rollins school on interview day, and I'm interested in epidemiology). I also really like that there's an undergrad associated with the school, and it seems like a 'bigger name,' which might be important since I'm interested in academic medicine.

I don't really have any idea what I want to do, but I felt that Jeff seemed to focus more on becoming a great clinician, which I really liked about the place when compared with the impression I got at Emory. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

The only question you have to ask yourself:

Are the extra opportunities at Emory (MPH, research, academia) worth leaving home?

Obviously you can go into any field from either school, Emory will just give you more opportunities to get into top academic residency programs.

You can become great clinician at any school.

(2 exceptions: if you're interested in orthopedics or ophthalmology go to Jefferson)

I am going through a similar experience with Emory and UC Davis (would like to practice in California, didn't like/no support network in Atlanta, worried that Emory is too good to pass up), and am also very interested in what people have to say about this.

It sounds like you should make every effort to attend Emory's second look if they have one before making a decision, since it seems you may have interviewed on an unrepresentative day. The research ranking difference is high enough in this case that you should really give Emory the chance to show you a better side, particularly if you are interested in academic medicine.

But if you definitely feel you would be happier at Jefferson, then go for that. You'll have great opportunities at either place.

I'm assuming cost being fairly equal here? You didn't say anything about that side of things.

I haven't heard about financial aid from either place, but I'm assuming based on people I've spoken to that there's only going to be a minor difference in price.
