I just recently got accept to HUCM and I am super excited about it! I've heard a few people mention that there will be an official Facebook group/page for the Class of 2019; but in the mean time, I figured we could use this thread as a way to talk about our experience, possible housing accommodations, and whatever else comes to mind!

I'll start off with a question:

On the letter of acceptance, there's a part that mentions that if we will need financial aid, we have to fill out FAFSA and the Howard University Financial Aid Application. Where do we find the latter? I looked all over the packet and there is no link to it at all...
Am I missing something?

It is on their website. You have to log in with your Bison stuff I believe.

ok. But how? I didn't see any directions on how to do that on the letter of acceptance. So I must be missing something then...
It should be in a following email you receive regarding financial aid

I'm definitely planning on living off campus. I heard most COM students live in Hyattsville or Silver Spring. I've stayed in Silver Spring a couple of times but am not familiar with Hyattsville... I'm trying to save as much $$ as possible so I'm shooting for roommates (2 or more). I've been looking at this site as well https://howard.offcampuspartners.com/.

Hyattsville is kinda far. So I'm guessing that we should definitely have a car up there...
Thank you for the website!

Summit Hills in Silver Spring is pretty good. Everything is included in the rent (except for luxuries like cable and internet lol) which is great during the hot summers and cold winters! A lot of current med school students live there. It's less than 1 mile away from the Metro and Downtown Silver Spring. It's also close to a grocery store (Giant). There's a gym, liquor store, pool, ample parking (some visitors, some assigned), and a mini dog park. That's all I know so far based on what current med students have told me. Can't wait to see you all in the Summer/Fall!

That sounds awesome! I'll look into that.

Do you know how mandatory having a car is as med student? I have one now at home and I am trying to see if I should be trying to sell it or keep it.

I hear it depends on where you live and your preference. If you conveniently live by the Metro, then you won't need your car as much. The public transportation is amazing in DC (from what I've heard and from my own experience when I was visiting). Also, if you do decide to drive, I think you have to worry about parking (they had to do a lottery the other year, not sure if this is the case every year). Parking in the streets is pain except on weekends when it's free. I've heard we won't really need a car during MS1 and MS2 but it would really help during MS3 and MS4 when rotations fall outside of metro operating times. Let me know if you have other questions! I know a MS2 and I can forward your questions to him! =)

Does anyone know when we should expect to hear back about financial aid? I haven't been able to find that out anywhere online.

Also on the website that has tutition and other fees they include a $2400 laptop fee? Does anyone know if that's mandatory? (I found that on this website in case you are wondering - http://healthsciences.howard.edu/education/colleges/medicine/student-finances)

Unsure when financial aid is going to be decided. The laptop thing is not mandatory... I think if you decide to stick with your own laptop, the laptop fee will be reimbursed to you. Just make sure your laptop meets their technical requirements.

Summit Hills sounds awesome! I will definitely be looking into that as well! I assume we'll be expected to secure housing prior to orientation?

I'm bringing my car with me to DC but I'm still hoping to find an apartment w/i good walking distance from a Metro stop, because I too have heard that parking on campus/morning expressway commute into DC can be a major pain. My car will primarily be for weekends/moving/random excursions.

And I've heard from the Fin Aid office about scholarships but not about total financial aid packages. I assume we won't get that information until April?... As far as laptops, I remember Ms. Walk saying that a lot of students purchased those convertible tablets (e.g. surface pros) that you can create PDF notes on and whatnot. Are you guys planning to purchase new comps for class? If so, any insight into whether Apple or Microsoft-based tablets would be better for the medical apps we'll have to eventually use?

hey, anybody stuck on whether or not living on the outskirts of DC will affect their first year experience? I kinda feel like i will be missing out

Well Ms. Walk told me that most students live off-campus. And knowing how expensive living in actual DC is, I think most people actually end up living right on the outskirts of DC. I don't think that will be a problem

anybody here know if there are student metro plans and if med students qualify or its only for undergrads?

Can anyone link me to the Howard University financial aid application? I have my bison ID but I can't locate the relevant 2014-2015 form online....

Has anyone done the financial aid application yet?
I found it but it doesn't let me select 15-16 for school year.

Anyone else have this issue?

I did not have this issue. After logging in to the bison Web portal, I clicked fin aid and was able to click on the drop down box and selected the 2015-2016. I even confirmed with Dr. Aitcheson that they received it. Try again on a different day. Maybe there was a glitch that day

I somewhat had a similar problem and someone else on SDN did as well. Whenever I clicked on 2015-2016 year, it would come up blank. I e-mailed [email protected] (his e-mailed showed up on the instruction video) and Dr. Aitcheson. I received a response within the same day and the issue was fixed.

I think our class will definitely need to keep a fire lit under the COM administration. They seem a bit slow on the take (i.e. outdated webpages/links, making sure the appropriate, current forms are listed in BisonWed, general timeliness, etc)... OAN: anyone know if they've had Match Day yet? I thought most schools had ceremonies last Friday but there's no news on the COM website (for this yr or past yrs)... I'm curious to see the residencies for this yr's M4s.

I'm running into the same problem with 2015-2016 not showing up. I couldn't take a screenshot with all the options showing so I took a pic with my phone instead: http://imgur.com/caOAVS6

I've emailed Dr. Aitcheson about it and I'll let you guys know what she responds.

Mine didn't look like that. How did you get there?

For any males looking for housing, I have a couple MS2 friends looking for a roommate . In July, they're moving to The Cloisters, an apartment complex about a mile and a half from the medical school. The neighborhood is really nice and the rent isn't bad when split three ways. Here's the website for more info: http://www.thecloistersdc.com/. Message me if you're interested, and congrats to everyone on your acceptance!

Know any women looking for roommates?

I'll be looking for a female roommate or roomates as well!
I've been looking at this website www.hotpads.com in the Columbia Heights neighborhood. It's right near Howard. And although it's a pretty expensive area, there are a couple good finds (like 2 bedroom apts for 1200-1300, which comes out to about 650 ish per person)
I assume there will be more popping up as we get closer to the end of the semester.

Yeah, more places should open up as people graduate in May. For those considering the Cloisters, keep in mind that there's no elevator, so if you're on the 2nd or 3rd floor, you have to move in using the stairs.

I called Howard Student Health because I wasn't sure which lab tests they wanted exactly (they listed syphilis, urinalysis, stool, nasal in the lab data possibly required for health professions students). The lady I spoke to said incoming medical students only need to get the syphilis one and the HIV one done. I thought it was worth mentioning since HIV screening wasn't listed in the student health document we received in the mail. Someone could call them to double check though.

If we've been to a doctor this year, we can just have them sign off on the health forms right?

Umm for the annual physical part yes I think so. I found out during my visit that I needed some updated shots since Howard wants some of them within the past year.

I haven't asked them yet. But I think probably not. The general standard usually doesn't include utilities
