LECOM-Bradenton Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The first year schedule says there's no PBL for us during the first two weeks.

Correct. The 1st years have mini-courses (have fun with that...), but the 2nd years have PBL. There might be one day at the beginning there where we take a diagnostic test instead...I don't have the schedule in front of me...

My interview group sat in on a PBL course for 2nd years. From what i recall Dean George told us that ALL interviewees sit in on a PBL session so they can know exactly what to expect...

Can the applicants that received interviews and acceptances from Lecom-B please list their stats?

I'm just a bit confused about Lecom-B because I received an email from them saying they do not want to interview me at this time but that my application will be reviewed again in 6o days and I'm not sure what to make of this because I feel like it's about as good as a rejection.

Meanwhile, I have received an interview invite from KCOM and Lecom-Erie which are schools that have been around longer than Lecom-B and are already more well-established. Therefore, I'm confused as to why I received interview invites from those schools but not from Lecom-B. Do you guys think this is due to Lecom-B's class of 2014 already being more or less full or them having higher standards, or a combination of both?

Any clarification will be much appreciated! Thanks 🙂

I am a non-traditional student, so my stats probably won't help much...I spoke with the Pre-Health Professions Advisement Office at my undergrad, and it sounds like LECOM-B is being very aggressive with getting interviews and acceptances out early this year...It sounds like your letter was just one step short of a rejection, but there is always a chance that after some people turn down their acceptances that they may still want to see you... Here are my stats:

**Non Traditional Student
Paramedic since '01 (Been in EMS since '97)
Paramedic Preceptor since '06
Florida state resident
MCAT 26P (B10, V10, P6)
B.S. Molecular Biology & Microbiology
Science GPA 3.29
Overall GPA 3.37

Completed 11/10/09, Interviewed 11/16/09, Accepted 11/18/09

If you want stats, go back a few pages and read forward. People usually throw out their stats when they get an interview/acceptance, or they have MDapps which will show their stats as well.

There have been several people on here who have gotten the same notice. From what I remember, some people were offered interviews within a few weeks of that. I wouldn't take it as an outright rejection at all.

I don't think it has to do with the class already being full, or being selected based on higher standards. Have patience, there is still definitely a chance for you- I'd give it a little bit of time, send a LOI if you'd like. In the meantime, browse back through this thread- it'll answer a lot of your questions! Congrats on the other interviews, hope they go well!:xf:

Should be PBL going on. Hopefully, seeing as how it's the 2nd week of school!

It's not impossible to room with students. Some of us frequent here, but facebook (LECOM groups are good) or the LECOM SGA website also exist. You could just go post and ask. Not sure if you'll get any replies or not, but someone might be willing to take you!

Per digitlnoize's advice, I'm putting a request on this thread... Might anyone be able to host me on Jan 7th? (Night before my interview) My plan is to arrive into Tampa (from Baltimore) the afternoon of the 7th and rent a car for getting to/around/from Bradenton. Plan to fly back late on the 8th (after driving around the Bradenton area a bit post-interview to see what my hopefully-future neighborhood is like). I'm 27, a recent transplant back to PA after 8 years in NYC, friendly, polite, and allergic to cats (sadface).

Am also going to post on FB &c, but wanted to cover my bases. Am doing this application-year business on a shoestring (i.e. low-paying temp-jobs), so this kind of help would be *hugely* appreciated! Please PM me with any info.

Thanks and good luck to all!

Although KCOM and LECOM-E have been around longer, LECOM-B is the better school right now. We've been #2 in Comlex pass rate for the last 2 years and this year we were #1 with 100% pass rate (which has never been done before!)

This trend has upped the competitiveness a little bit.

That being said, the LECOM-B admissions people do a great job of selecting people based on their ability to excel in PBL, and although scores matter, I think they matter less than at some places. I have classmates with a huge range of MCATs and GPA's (I've heard MCATs as high as 33 and as low as 24 or so...they probably go higher and lower than that).

Hard to say why you haven't heard anything yet without seeing your whole app. You could always call and ask!

My interview group sat in on a PBL course for 2nd years. From what i recall Dean George told us that ALL interviewees sit in on a PBL session so they can know exactly what to expect...

Not everyone gets to sit in on a session. If there's not one happening that day, you're SOL. I'd say about ~80% of interviewees get to see one, based on an informal "raise-your-hand-if-you-got-to-see-a-PBL-session-when-you-interviewed" survey they took of my class last year.

Random question...why does LECOM feel the need to advertise on Google ads....isn't that kinda stepping down to the level of the Caribbean schools?

That's most likely handled out of the LECOM-Erie office, and honestly, we question lots of things they do...lol. I know we're considered a "branch" campus, but in reality, we're fairly independent.

I'll ask our marketing guy next time I see him though...lol.

While we're talking about marketing stuff...one good perk of coming here is discounted sporting/event tickets. We get discounted tickets to the Tampa Bay Rays, Sarasota Reds, Van Wezel Performing Arts Center, Local Restaurants, and lots of other stuff...some of the faculty also have season Bucs (football) and Lightning (hockey) tickets they've been known to share!

I stand corrected... For those who are still interviewing, I would definitely attempt to sit in on a PBL session at all costs if possible. PBL did not make full sense to me until I had the opportunity to see it in action. Good luck!

Good luck.

I have questioned this tactic from LECOM-B and have come to a series of conclusions. These are purely speculation and IN NO WAY REFLECTS HOW LECOM-B TRULY OPERATES.

I thought that the 60 days was a weird time frame till I considered that LECOM-B gives those who have been accepted 60 days to turn in a $1,500 deposit to hold their position. Then I considered the application period as a series of waves. At the beginning of the cycle, there are a few applicants but they start in the first wave. In 60 days, the admissions committee knows how many positions are available. Then they get to the next waves till they reach a peak amount of applicants. In order to make sure they have enough applicants to choose from during the slow months, they push some qualified applicants from the peak to the slow months via the 60 day hold. If the month is very slow and the competition is scarce then you get an interview.

Would you rather be denied or go on this ride? Any better ideas? This is a simplified version of my larger theory but it is fun to speculate.

Digitlnoize is a fantastic resource!!!! I would love to hear his opinion on my theory.

I think it's good in theory. The only problem is that admission at LECOM-B moves VERY quickly. The committee meets weekly, and acceptances go out just as often, so I'm not so sure about the "waves."

That being said, it still probably has something to do with it, as the "60 days" are also up weekly. I dunno...

In reality, I think that all it means, is that they didn't like your app enough (as compared to the others they have currently) to give you an interview now. Just not enough space. But, they like it enough to not reject you. They're saying, "maybe we can squeeze you in a month or two."

It's not great news, but I wouldn't say it's terrible. Now...depending on the apps they get over the next couple months, and how many spots are dropped, etc...will determine whether they can squeeze you in, or whether you'll get the dreaded rejection letter...

Again, not terrible news...that would be an outright rejection...but not spectacular either. have hope.

I wouldn't freak out about it too much yet. I know a lot of people in my class (1st year) didn't interview until January or even later. Don't give up yet! It's so tough to be patient when going through this whole process but at this point there isn't really anything you can do other than just wait and hope for the invite. Good luck 👍

I submitted my secondary late on 12/1 (AACOMAS is taking nearly 10 weeks now to process people 😱, my AMCAS app was submitted same day and took 2 weeks) and was offered an interview yesterday afternoon. Very excited, ever since I made the decision to go back to school and started looking into possible medical schools, this one has appealed to me. From the PBL, the location (I live in Jacksonville), to reading threads from former students, this place has always "clicked". I hope it does on the interview too.

Non traditional, 34 male. 35 mcat, 3.49 GPA (a 3.9something for the last 40 classes I took).

Only thing I'm bummed about after reading this is I guess there won't be a PBL session to sit in since my interview is on Tuesday?

You are correct, sir. As far as I know. I sure won't be there on Tuesday!!! Maybe the 1st years...but probably not...we never have PBL on Tuesday...

It's not a huge deal. Read some of the descriptions here on SDN about LECOM-B PBL and you'll be ok. I myself have posted a bunch of 'em in the past, just do a search or go through my old posts in the LECOM-B threads...you'll see 'em. nlax and scpod posts are also good resources for descriptions.

Me too! (Was called on Tues) Am a tricky combo of nervous & excited... it will be my first interview. Sorta wish they were able to room us with students, as flying down (from PA) and renting a car are hitting my wallet pretty hard.

Anyone know whether there will be PBL sessions to sit in on that week...? (i.e. no exams going on)

Fly out of BWI, that was the cheapest for me.. well.. unless you're from northern PA, lol. Where are you coming from? Harrisburg girl here.

According to the spring semester schedules the school emailed a couple of weeks ago, 2nd years have PBL Tuesday and Friday starting the first week of January, while 1st years have PBL Monday/Wednesday/Friday starting the week of the 18th. So... if your interview is on a Tuesday in January or later, you'll see a PBL session.

Also, if anyone is interviewing on Friday, December 11, 2nd years don't have PBL, but they rescheduled some of the 1st year groups to go in the morning, so you won't miss out.

i was wondering what my chances of getting in at lecom are. i plan on applying in june 2010.

MCAT 28K PS 7 VR 11 BS 10
cgpa 3.2
sgpa 3.4
microbiology major

CNA, AUA

I have little volenteer work but about 3.5 years of hospital experience as a nurse aid and urology tech. i am an oklahoma resident and plan on applying to OSU as well. I would also appreciate any recomendations for schools other than lecom that i have a chance of getting in at.

You are correct! I totally forgot about our (2nd years') schedule change next semester! PBL only twice a week = more time to study for the boards!

Probably pretty good. I had a 28R, similar stats. Almost everyone I've talked to here had a great MCAT, except for our Physics.

If you ask me, that is the only difference between MD's and DO's. I would bet that most of us DO's sucked more at MCAT physics. 😀

I also think that LECOM-B likes people with real world experience...so that's probably a plus...can't hurt at least. I had similar GPA's...

You have a decent shot, for sure. It's tough to say what will catch one admin committee's eye, which is why most people end up applying to so many schools. The best general advice I can give you is to get your application in early, especially since AACOMAS tends to take a while to certify people's applications.

As far as your chances, definitely apply to every state school you would go to if accepted since admissions to those schools tend to be so heavily weighted towards residents. My opinion (based on my experience applying--I don't have any inside info) is that schools with multiple campuses like LECOM, Kirksville, Tuoro, and Midwestern have similar standards, so that if you're competitive at one, you're likely to be competitive at several of them. Look at which ones you would attend if you were accepted, and go from there.

Oh, and Digitl: Good luck, man. I'd be jealous of the 2-a-week PBL except that I know a lot of you will be busting yourselves in board prep hell.

See folks, in PBL-land, meeting twice a week just means you have an extra day to read.

Yep, BWI is definitely the plan, as I'll be coming from York. Haven't actually *bought* my ticket yet, have to wait for next paycheck, argh. Hopefully prices won't go up tooo much by Friday! Did you already have your interview, or are you going in Jan as well...?

Can the applicants that received interviews and acceptances from Lecom-B please list their stats?

I didn't list mine anywhere yet, so here goes (though, as I'm a non-trad student, take as you will):
Ugrad cGPA: 3.6
Postbac cGPA: 3.5
Postbac sGPA: 3.2
MCAT: 34R (10PS, 11BS, 13VB)
Am 27 yrs old, did ugrad & postbac at Columbia, lots of clinical volunteer hours, and hopefully-decent LORs (our committee never lets us see them, or even to know *which* ones they're choosing from the dossier... Though I know for sure one of them is from the DO I shadowed, which went well, so that's a relief).

Hope that helps!

Yay! York, that is so close to me! (I'm actually from Boiling Springs - 5 minutes outside Carlisle). I interviewed the day before Halloween and got accepted the following Thursday. Just sent in my deposit too since that was due this past weekend.

For those wondering about stats - here's mine.

Traditional student - 21 years old - about to graduate from Virginia Tech in the spring.

MCAT 26N
BS: 11
VR: 9
PS:6 - Bahahahaha - yeah, I hate Physics.

GPA: 4.0 Science and Overall

Interview 11/20
Accepted 11/30

Non-traditional student - 29 years old

4 year career in Biomedical Engineering and Health care devices

B.S. Biology from FL. State University GPA 3.0 sGPA 3.3
Master's Degree from Univ. of So. FL GPA and sGPA 3.67

MCAT 28N
BS: 10
VR: 11
PS:7 -another physics hater

I see a pattern developing with the Physics! lol We all hate physics!

Indeed. Physics-haters unite! (I mean, seriously, what we really need for med school could be taught in ~5 weeks! Yet they make us slog through it for a whole year! That time/energy could have been spent learning something sooo much more useful for med school, no?)

I see a pattern developing with the Physics! lol We all hate physics!

You know whats funny...I HATE physics and didn't mind gen chem- I did well in the courses (A's) and devoted only about half of my energy to that section. My PS was an 11 and my BS was lower-10 first time, 9 second (and I love all of that content and always scored high on practice tests!)...the confusion continues 😛

I agree that certain aspects of physics are a bit abstract and take a bit longer to grasp, but it is definitely important in medicine.

Physics is actually quite important in various fields of medicine. For example, radiology (MRI, and other forms of diagnostic radiology); anesthesiology; and also ophthalmology (light, optics, etc). These are just a few of the examples.

Interview is quickly approaching now (this coming Friday 12/11), getting nervous.

Stats for those curious are in MDapps but for the lazy:

cGPA: 2.83
sGPA: 2.79
MCAT: 33N (11, 11, 11)
Yr of cancer/microbio research, alot of clinical/patient experience in two jobs I currently have (although only one was initially on AACOM)

As for the physics MCAT I was actually disappointed with my 11. Not trying to be an ass, Physics always came easier to me and I was initially an electrical engineering major when I started school. The 11 I got on the actual test was the lowest score I got including the 8 practice tests I took. Then again the 11 verbal I got was also the highest score other than a fluke 14 I got on one practice test.

I was EXTREMELY disappointed in my 6 in physics....Never scored below a 9 on any practice tests, and then I pulled off a 6 on game day! WTF! haha, oh well life goes on!

Good luck with your interview DbDan...It was a good day in my opinion!

Did anyone receive the "interview reconfirmation - must reply" email? I received it today, but the email was all FUBAR - the email just looked like computer code.

Heather confirmed my appointment for me over the phone, however, there weren't 10 days between my invite and the interview. If you give her a call she can probably confirm you over the phone.

My physics portion was all like engines and pulleys and levers and crap that I could not care less about. Epic fail, MCAT, epic fail... lol

LECOM portal said a decision was made on my application, I will receive a letter within 30 days.....

I am calling tomorrow....

Yeah...I really don't see the point in doing about 75% of undergrad prior to med school. All it did was waste 4 years of my life...

As far as things useful for med school, physics is WAAAY down the list. The "Flow" stuff kinda applies, but anyone who's ever used a HOSE will understand blood pressure just as well...

Chemistry and Orgo have also been 99% worthless. I don't have to know how to make Lasix...just how to use it. Some basic acid/base is helpful.

Physiology is helpful. Embryo and Anatomy would have been helpful. Histo would have been helpful. Pharm would have been helpful. Nothing I could've taken at my undergrad. Statistics is helpful, but not for school...just for understanding articles and stuff.

Looking back at undergrad.... I should have taken some sort of health policy class or Insurance 101 or something.

In all seriousness a little exposure to the business side would be helpful. Certianly don't get much, if any, of that during med school and even residents and attendings seem to have a hard time navigating the insurance/business minefield. Doesn't need to be MBA level management theory stuff, just overviews on how insurance operates, reimbursement models, etc....

Agreed. We just got an "OMM" lecture on billing...

I will say that much of that stuff might be non-applicable soon, given the new health reforms that might turn everything on it's head...

I've heard this quite a bit. Luckily I've taken alot of Physiology/Embryo/Anatomy including cadaver labs in undergrad. I'm hoping my time as a Physiological Science/Systems Anatomy major will put me at an advantage when it comes to the similar med school classes

News Flash

I have word that it is taking AACOMAS 10 weeks to process applications at this point.

If this trend continues, if your app is not submitted by mid-January, it is possible that LECOM-B won't get your information until it is too late!

If you haven't submitted already...I'd get on that.

Insane that this is the case, and I thought the 7 weeks it took me to get verified was unreasonable. Guess it looks like there may be more than the expected number of applicants this year

Maybe not necessarily more applicants...just a larger percentage that are procrastinators versus in the past 😉 (just kidding)

I think all the hold up is because of just one guy who does not follow directions!!!! They say they process the applications in the order they receive them so it is possible. LOL!!

For those who have sent their deposits in already, I have a couple of questions for you.

On the letter from Ron Shively (that came with acceptance letter) it says to send the forms and matriculation fee to his attention. On the bottom of the housing/ address update form, it says to send the matriculation fee and the forms to his wife Annette Shively. Does it matter which person I send it to if they are each listed in a different spot?

Also, it says to deliver it by hand or with certified mail. I just got the money together today, so I am sending everything out tomorrow (from NY). It has to be in by Monday- I don't know if anything but Express Mail will get it there on time (or early), but obviously this would not be sending it by certified mail like the letter states. Does anyone have any insight into this and if it is ok?

Does it matter which person I send it to if they are each listed in a different spot?

I would follow the acceptance letter, since that would've been drafted more recently than the forms you were sent. Given that Ron's office is about 20 feet from Annette's desk, they should be able to figure it out whichever name you put on the envelope.

And sending in your deposit and paperwork via certified mail is for your protection more than for theirs. Certified mail just gives you tracking info so you can prove any screw-ups aren't your fault. Express mail includes free online tracking according to the USPS website, so you should be covered. I think you can even add delivery confirmation where they send you a postcard confirming it arrived where it was supposed to, if you're especially paranoid.

You can always call the admin office to be sure, I doubt it would take them too long to set you straight.
