Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I suppose that should work out well !

I have one question though. From what I understand Mr Kenobi, you think I should wait till I get my scores back for submitting the application to AACOMAS or to the schools ?

The help you guys are giving is just pure AwesomeSauce ! 😀

You don't need to wait to get your MCAT score back to submit your application with AACOMAS and get it verified. In fact, I would definitely do this to ensure your application is ready to be submitted to the schools your interested in the day you receive your MCAT score.

You do this by having your entire application complete (sans MCAT) with AACOMAS and then apply to a single school that is lower on the list of schools that you are interested in. This will verify your application with AACOMAS.

When you get your MCAT score back, and if it is satisfactory to you, you submit it to AACOMAS and forward your application to the rest of the schools you are planning on applying to. (Note that when you submit your MCAT score to AACOMAS it will automatically be forwarded to the original single school you applied to so you don't need to worry about that)

This method will save you the few weeks it normally takes for AACOMAS to verify your application when you first submit it to schools. If you were to wait to submit your application (to at least 1 school) until you got your MCAT score back, you would end up having to wait a few extra weeks for AACOMAS to verify your application before they are sent to the schools.

WOW ..... Thank you very much for this wealth of info.

I do understand now that only if I apply to a school will the AACOMAS start the verification process. Thanks so much again, and I will be going ahead with my application as you suggested as soon as I have taken my July MCAT.

Yes, he's absolutely right! The verification process is going really fast right now, but it's going to get really busy and slow down significantly in July and August- the sooner the better! Good luck!

You are absolutely welcome! Don't hesitate to ask about anything else that comes up that you need help with. Feel free to PM me if needed as well. Good luck!

Ok wait so can you add letter of recs to your application after it has been verified by aacomas and sent out?

No. With the DO application process your LORs aren't included with the primary application through AACOMAS.

They will need to be sent to the schools via interfolio, virtualevals or snail mail etc. when/if you send in your secondary applications.

** When the time comes, make sure you check which listed above method the schools prefer. Most will accept your letters electronically (interfolio/VE) but some don't like snail mail etc...many schools will prompt you how and when to send your letters.

Thanks so much!! That really helped clear some things up

is there regional preference/bias for Marian?

I'd say they like people from the region, specifically Indiana...But from what I observed this last cycle, there isn't enough of a preference/bias that it should keep someone who isn't from the region from applying there. If you're a good all around candidate this school will look at you. In the class of 2017 there are lots of people from the region but plenty who are not (myself included).

Sweet great to know--thanks!

aacomas submitted the first day - just waiting on verification
right now i'm sittin at about 3.5c 3.4s and 25 MCAT
ND resident
Really hoping to get some love this cycle!!!

Can't you submit your app now and wait until your MCAT is released to the school? Wouldn't that be better than waiting until you get your score back?

You sure can. That's what we were talking about above. The school won't consider you complete until your MCAT score is received...but you'll be verified with AACOMAS which will expedite the process a bit.

I agree, apply now because the longer you wait the less spots you will have open. It may not seem like much waiting a few weeks but it has massive differences in the long run, I know..

Received an email from MU this afternoon saying they received my app and they will be sending secondary invites to applicants within the next few weeks; exciting! 😀

Would be thrilled to go to school here!! Good luck!!

Any idea when they are going to start sending out secondaries?

Any idea when they are going to start sending out secondaries?

Today!!! OR next week!! OR the week after...I think I read somewhere that they are sending them out around 27-28th of this month, so we wait...as always

secondary invite! although there is a glitch in either the online form or my browser because I can't actually fill it out

I'm having the same problem. I tried Chrome, Firefox and Safari on Mac and Chrome and Explorer on Windows, so I definitely don't think it's on our end.

same here. they're not picking up the phone either.

Secondary Invite! Woohoo!
butttt can't fill it out.

Will email Bryan about it.

I got a secondary application today too, but the fields cannot be selected. I am from SC but really want to go to school here.

I'm sure that the supplement will be fixed soon. Until then we can still write the short essays and have them ready to go. Also this has to be the most user friendly portal I have seen yet. Very impressed.

I agree

I notice that the email says 2013 fall entering class and the countdown on the secondary deadline says March, 2013. I am sure it will be fixed tomorrow.

Good observation! I saw that the count down clock read all zeroes but I didn't put the dates together.

how should I answer the question about interest in practicing in Indiana? i imagine an automatic rejection if i answer no. i'm not sure where i want to practice medicine yet and just want to apply broadly to hope for an acceptance.

$100 for this secondary seems mighty steep.

Some of the admissions deans visited my undergrad in the spring and it sounded like it wouldn't be auto rejection if you said no...but I think you should be open to it as their mission is to produce physicians for Indiana (correct me if I'm wrong but that came across very clearly implied or said in their presentation).

I would be honest--say you're not sure where you want to practice..but think about saying you'd be open to it.

Ps: pretty sure indiana has the best malpractice insurance in the united states and all of the IN physicians I've talked to love practicing in IN; some have even moved to IN *because* of horrible malpractice premiums in other states (pennsylvania is one example). Not saying you should say this in your essay, but maybe do some more research--I've heard great things about practicing medicine in IN. 🙂

Am I the only one who can't access the secondary application? I was sent an invitation, but when I logged in, I can't click the "yes" or "no" buttons or type my essays. Is anyone else experiencing the same problem?

Submitted!

Any idea how long before we hear about iis? I know last year it was within 2 weeks, not sure if they will still be keeping with that.

It may be the best $100 you have ever spent. Look on the bright side. 🙂

Secondary complete today and LOR's sent!

Hoping for some MU-COM love!

I have family in Indianapolis.

I'll mostikely fill out the secondary, but $100 for a second year school is borderline outrageous.

I'll most likely fill out the secondary, but $100 for a second year school is borderline outrageous.

A lot of AMCAS schools request $80-120 per secondary, so I wasn't fazed by the $100 fee from Marian...in fact, a lot of the DO schools who only charge $50 seem like a bargain; two for the price of one. 8)

Could someone please post the secondary essay questions?

Essay questions are basically:

Would you stay in Indiana? Why or Why not.

Why MU-COM?

What area of medicine are you interested in?

Is there anything else you want to tell us about yourself?

Hope that helps!

Also, serious props to them for clearly the most user friendly secondary process in terms of interface.....great design
